Densham, Robert  

This class is not that hard but it is very slow. He grades on attendence and requires you to stay the entire lecture and the entire lab. You never get any work back, so your grade is somewhat of a surprise. He goes over all the material and you do learn a lot but it is very slow. note: do not use the internet during class, it makes him furious.

Densham has pretty much checked out. He still teaches a class once in a while, but he is super flaky about office hours, class meetings and even appointments. The lectures are often loooong, rambling and painfully boring. However, he is very talented in typography and drawing, technically strong, and is a genuinely nice person. I would definitely suggest trying to get a class with another instructor, maybe LaPorte or Lovaglio.

although a nice guy outside the classroom, he is extremely SENILE inside the classroom. the entire quarter consisted of 2 projects (one of them for the first 2 weeks, and the other for the rest of the quarter) the PROBLEM is that he changed the second project EVERY DAY, so all the work you put into it is worth NOTHING. then on the last day of class he decides to have a final...on friday, from 4-7....2nd to last slot for finals...and he DIDNT SHOW UP for the final....besides all of that crap, he doesnt know how to answer questions and loves to talk about himself, if you want to actually learn something, take mccormick, otherwise its a waste of time

I highly suggest Prof. Densham to anyone who is taking the classes he is still teaching. Although his classes move slow which is true, I have learned more from him than most other teachers in the department. Robert has a ton of experience, especially in the areas of type, design and life drawing--he teaches you the most important things that apply to art and design. You can get the most out of his classes by talking to him individually about your assignments- I got the most out of the time spent discussing my ideas with him. Prof. Densham has a pretty open mind to suggestions and his knowledge with graphics programs like Illustrator and PS are very extensive. Robert isn't teaching much longer so get into his classes if you can.

Densham lectures could be described in one way: mind numbing. Though the man cleary has skill, he checked out a long time ago. The classes pace is extremely slow and the same information is lectured on multiple times. During critique he never involves the students, and rarely asks why you what you were thinking for you composition. When it comes to style Densham is more intersted in getting the students work to look like his, instead of helping you find your own. He is stylistically stuck in the late 60's early 70's and dispises contemporary typography. Oh yeah, be sure to go to class, because no matter how little is accomplished your grade depends on you going all the time.

Robert is probably my favorite teacher I have had at Cal Poly so far. He's nuts! But that's also why I loved him. I had him for Life Drawing I then took Advanced Life Drawing for 6 hours on Friday because I liked him so much. It is hard in the beginning to sacrifice your "own" way of drawing to learn his, but once you do you will be happy with the results. Too bad he's retiring.
