DeKleine exactly make my first Calculus class easy. Lectures were all over the place while the final was a BITCH! Still got a B overall but that's because I aced the first two (of four) midterms since they didnt get that far into actual calculus. Thank god he drops one of four exams since I bombed the third. Near of the end of the quarter, I had no fuckin clue what integrals were, until I took Kaul for 142 and he saved me from never understanding calculus (thank god for Kaul!!!) but avoid Art if possible. I would not recommend him to students new to Calculus, especially at a college level.

If you have never taken calculus before, I suggest you take another class. I was so lost in this class, i had to ask roomates for help. He can be a good teacher, if you have a pretty firm background in calculus 1. he has 4 midterms that can really boost your grade since he covers very little in between. I had two midterms back to back, week after week. But since half of the time he lost me in his lectures, that really didnt help me. Also, i think he kills about 2 trees per class. He gives you these packets that are pointless if you dont understand the material. Again, he wasn't a good lecturer for me, but if you think you have taken calculus in high school, he might work for you.

Basically, look at the previous rankings given to Dr. De Kleine and notice most the bad ones were people with bad grades, and the good ones were people with good grades. Take that for what you will. This guy is so nice. I admit he seemed a little intimidating at first, but he is very personable and seems to care about his students. I love the comment about him being Santa Clause teaching calculus. Honestly, his ability as a math teacher is not the best I have ever had, but if you put the work into it and go to class, you will do well and learn the material. Basically he teaches well enough that the extent of your learning will depend on you. There are 3 midterms, of which he throws out the lowest grade. He doesn't collect hw, but instead gives quizes almost daily which are problems STRAIGHT off the homework problems assigned. If you do better on the final than you did on your midterms, he will replace your midterm average with your final exam grade. In other words, if you do decent on the quizzes and get an A on the final, you get an A in the class. I went to get help in his office hours once, and he is even more friendly there than in class. I am sure there are better math profs out there, but considering what I have heard about most of the math teachers at Cal Poly, I'd say Dr. De Kleine is not a bad one to have.

Professor DeKlein was a really nice guy and was always willing to help you wwith anything that you didn't understand. His lectures during classtime, however; were a bit random and reflected his passion for math rather than his need for us to understand the information. If you are willing to read the book yourself and get help from others, you can definitely get an A in his class. But if you depend on professor's lectures to understand the information, I wouldn't recommend DeKlein.

He is the best calculus professor I've had (I've taken calc classes from 3 profs). He presents the material in a very straight forward manner, unlike a lot of the other profs. His quizzes are almost daily, but if you keep up with the homework (or at least stay awake in class like I did), you'll do fine. The tests are just basic tests of ability, not like other professor's where they make you take your current basic knowledge and apply it to hard never-before-seen type problems. Be warned though: it is very easy to end up w/ a C because he does not collect homework (if he doesn't collect it, why bother doing it, right?) I was a slacker student at the time, didn't do the homework, got Cs and Bs on the quizzes, and an A and a C on the midterms, and ended up w/ a C+. If you want to actually learn stuff and not get too frustrated, I definitely recommend DeKleine. If you're a slacker student who won't do any work, why are you taking calculus in the first place, or better yet, why are you in a major that requires you to take calculus?

Dr. De Kleine is a great teacher who helps you out if you have any problems with the material. His quizes are easy, but be careful about his tests because they can be challenging. His grading method is great, and if you do some of the homework, and do well on his quizes, odds are you will do well in his class. Don't hesitate to take this proffessor, he is one of the best I've had.

If you've taken calculus before, and are comfortable with the material already, he's a really easy teacher. If you're taking it for the first time, however, I don't think you'd be able to learn anything. He talks about unrelated things a lot, and often gets stuck on a problem when doing an example on the board. Homework wasn't collected, so we didn't get a lot of feedback except for the daily quizzes. He's a nice guy, but not a good teacher.

To be honest, I loved DeKleine. Absolutely take him if you can. His lectures may not be the best, but he is more than willing to help you at office hours (which, by the way, never had anyone at them, which is nice). It's at office hours that I really learned the material that I had a hard time with in class. In addition to the fact that he drops the lowest of the three midterms, there are quizes nearly everyday that are easy and will boost your grade. If that is not enough, he assigns extra credit, tons of it. So much, that 10% of my grade came from extra credit. If you can, take his class.

Dr. Dekleine is a really nice guy, but a lousy teacher for MAth 143. I heard he is great in other classes, but not this one. His lectures consisted of reading straight off of photocaopied pages from the text. He was vairy vague with explanations and unclear when intorducing new concepts. He rarely seemed prepared for typical problems students had and was often unable to answer questions. I came away from the class without any real sense of new knowledge. He's also really into graphing calculators, thats usually his solution to a question, use your calculator.

De Kleine is not the worst math teacher I had, but he is definitly not the best. Right now I am on the brink of failing. I have put in a good deal of time preparing for the three midterms and well lets just say I have only 150/300. I am not saying that it is impossible to do good. There are people in the class (math majors) who are doing stellar, yet the others in the class are in the same boat as me. So the other reviews about his teaching style (just the examples in the book) are correct. He is all over the place in lecture and well he is not much help. Just read the book and got to class to take the daily quiz.

while i found the material extremely easy to understand by just reading the book, dekleine was no help at all if you got stuck on something. if we would ask him to do a harder problem from the homework in class, he would spend at least 10 minutes standing there looking at it confused. "grandpa" was a nice guy, but definately lacked in being able to present the material in any sort of a helpful manner. the first half of the quarter all notes he gave us were photocopied straight out of the book. expect 3-4 quizes on average per week (he tells you when they are in the syllabus) which are problems taken from the assigned homework. the first test was extremely easy but he takes off big points for even the littlest of mistake. second test was harder because it covered more material. third test was way too long which he later acknowledged by giving everyone 10 extra points on it. the lowest of the 3 test scores is dropped and the other two add up for a possible 200 points of the total possible 500 for the course. there are 100 possible points from the quizes and the final is out of 200. read the book tp know your stuff and go to class only for the quizes because dekleine is no help at all

Art is a great guy. Real laid back and ready to help students out. His daily quizes are a joke, they will keep your grade up. Even if you do bad on the exams, he drops the worst and will replace the other two if your final grade is higher. His lectures are a tad boring but bearable. If you can get Dekleine I would recomend him. As long as you are willing to put in some effort, its not hard to get a high grade.

I took him for 142, and decided to take him again for 143. He is a GREAT guy. Extremely nice (although it doesn't seem so during the first week or so). As for grading, the guy/girl two posts ago was pretty much accurate. As for teaching ability, I believe he is alright. Many times I ended up reading the book to clarify, but I left the class understanding everything and it was mostly due to lecture, not the book. He is not the most exciting, but unless you have him at 7 or 8 AM you shouldn't fall asleep. Great Guy, go to his office hours. He is very approachable and willing to help. Over-all, not the best, but if you go to lecture, and do your part to learn, you will.

Prof DeKleine was a fairly good professor. Yes he is old and Yes his lectures are almost exactly the book, but i still liked him. His homework is never due, but often times the quizzes are exact problems from the homework. I had a heavy course load and put off most of the homework, so my quiz grade suffered. He had a quiz about every other day, and he dropped our two lowest grades. The midterms are almost exclussively chapter summary problems with only slight changes. To study for the tests I just did all the problems in the chapter summary two times and then went over the examples in each of the sections. There were three midterms and he automatically dropped the lowest one, then he replaced either or both of the other ones if the final was a better grade. the quizzes end up being 20%, the midterms 20% ea. and the final 40%. So you could basically never show up for a class except to take the final and still get an 80% (if you score a perfect on the final...which is quite possible.) I liked him as a professo5r and a person. Going to his class was a nice change from the labor intensive engineering classes. I never read the book cause his lectures were almost the exact same thing and he made massive amounts of printouts and copies to go along with his lectures. I highly recommend Prof. DeKleine and would love to take him again if I have the chance.

I have never been very good at math and as a result, I avoided taking calculus in high school. I went into this class with zero knowledge of calculus, and I was a little bit intimidated by the thought of taking it. The first week was pretty understandable (limits). The next week comes along and the drop date passes, just before our first exam. I got a C on the first exam, but I figured it was because I wasn't familiar with his exam formats. Oh, was I wrong...it only got significantly worse. When he tried to explain the derivative, he spent an hour on something that could have taken 5 minutes (YES! The derivative is the line tangent to the curve...) I asked the next day if he was going to elaborate more on how to solve derivatives, and he said "No, I think I covered the material pretty thoroughly". Yes, I failed the class because I could not pull off anything better on the final (Your final grade replaces any grades lower than it, the only upside of the course). I retook the class over the summer from a different professor and came out with a high B. If you are not absolutely comfortable with calculus or if you haven't taken any calculus before, avoid DeKleine at all costs!!! It's not worth a failing grade on your transcript.

He is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. I took Calc 1 last quarter, and it wasn't hard at all. But Calc 2 is horrible with DeKleine. His lectures are never clear, and sometimes he spends the ENTIRE class period doing one problem. The main problem is that the book does not teach very well, so having a good teacher is essential. But he doesn't explain anything well. I never understand what he is talking about in lecture, and we have 5 midterms, which is absolutely ridiculous. Honestly, I would try to avoid him at all costs. I don't think I have ever had such a bad teacher. He doesn't know how to teach, and he gives really hard tests. It's not worth it all. If you can someone else, I would most definitely recommend it.

Professor DeKleine is very supportive of his student's efforts. There are plenty of opportunities to get a good grade in the class since he drops the lowest test and two quizzes, which I think is more than fair. Everybody in my class loved this guy. I thought he was good, but not exceptional. He was more concerned with making sure you knew how to approach a particular type of problem rather than showing you how to get the correct answer. Most of my classmates had already taken Calculus in high school, so for them it was probably a good review. This was my first Calculus class though, and his teaching style was not the best for me. He's definitely good though. He's a very sweet man and he really seems to really care about his students. We ever I see him around campus he always says hello and calls me by name(and that's not to common since professors go through hundreds of students). Oh and one more thing. First of all, DeKline drops 3 of 20 quizzes, and one of three midterms. However, this was necessary just to pass a large portion of the class. The median and mean for the first two exams were not even at 60%. The general class thought the way he conveyed material to be very confusing. Dont get me wrong the class is fair, but the class was not prepared for the midterms, let alone the final, which. The final is one of the toughest tests ive taken, despite the entire class not doing well. Very nice guy, willing to help, but if youre not willing to study your butt off, you wont do well.

Dr. DeKlein is an overall good professor who sincerely cares and takes interest in his students. The difficulty in this course is due to the large amount of material covered in one quarter. In my opinion, this course should be taught in two quarters, though I see both sides of this issue. If you take this course with no calculus background like I did, you might be in for a struggle. Take advantage of study groups and get help in the instant you are in question about anything, as calculus builds on a foundation like most math. Homework in this class is not turned in but there are quizes almost everyday. My advise would be to keep up with the work.

You never have homework, unlike the other math teachers who assign so many problems every night. Each day there's a quiz, but he goes over the material that day at the beginning of class so it's easy points. And a lot of the time he cancels his quizzes or you do them as a class for full points. His tests do require that you study at least a little bit but he's a fair grader. He tries to make class interesting by being funny and he prints off notes for you. I didn't even by the book for this class and I'm not struggling. I recommend taking DeKleine because he really cares about his students and helping them succeed. Bus Calc is a fairly difficult class when taught by Dekleine. No homework, but you have to show up to class everyday because he gives quizes on a daily basis that are mandatory for your survival. His teaching style may be helpful for some but for others it may be a bit boring. He focuses more on concepts, why we are doing things, instead of step by step ways to apply formulas to calculus problems. His midterms and finals are difficult, not rocket science, just hard because everything from the book is cumalative on the tests and he does not tell you specifically what will be on the tests, so your left study the book and anticipating what he plans on doing on the test. Trust me his lectures and tests don't match up. On the plus side he is always available during office hours, willing to help, and his grade curving scheme really helps out struggling students. Just keep in mind the average score on the first midterm was 17 out 100, seriously, not because the class was dumb, just because his lectures and tests had no correlations. Dekleine is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. His notes are photocopied notes from the book, which are still too complex for most students, he assumes you know everything before hand, and his grading cuts no slack. I'm a good student, but I could not handle this class. On his behalf, some of teh students took Calc. A-b/ b-c already, and they got A's, but everyone else painfully struggles through it. When I visited him for office hours he knew nothing about me, my name, my grades, what I was having a hard time on, absolutely nothing. So it takes him more time to regrade your test/quiz and figure out where you went wrong, and then again he assumes you know what he's talking about. His notes are THE pages from the book and couldn't be more confusing. His tests are insanely hard, he couldn't pull harder questions from where ever he pulls them from. And he will cut you no slack when its graded. Overall, my highest test grade was the D on the final, which saved me form having to retake it. Prof. DeKleine is pretty awesome. He makes some corny jokes and keeps a pretty light-hearted attitude through the quarter. The end of it does seem a little bit rushed; however, he manages to make sure everything is covered with a reasonable amount of time spent on everything. There is no DUE homework in the class but there are 21 quizzes through the quarter, which comes out to every other day, but normally it's three or four in a row. These quizzes are right out the homework he gives (which is not due but tested on these quizzes). Quizzes make up 100 points (about 16%) of the class. Then, there are four midterms, each worth 100 points of your grade; however the lowest score is dropped. This makes a total of 300 points (50% of the grade. Finally, the last 200 points (33%) is made up of the final which is cumulative. However, any and all midterm scores with a lower percentage than the final is also replaced with the final test score. Pretty easy A as long as you go to class and pay attention. Do some homework too... but you can get by without it.

Art is rather incompetent. He yells really loudly in class, to the point where I actually got a headache from him constantly talking so loud on a couple of occasions. He treats the author of the textbook like a God, always starting his sentences with "THE AUTHOR SAYS...!" or "YOUR AUTHOR SAYS...!" When doing math problems on the board in class, he constantly makes mistakes and will stand silently (a blessing to my ears) for up to five seconds at a time staring at his work trying to make a mistake, and when he finally corrects it, he just confuses you more with some hand waving. On the plus, he's very good about office hours, seeing as he's retiring soon and is teaching a very limited course load. He's friendly and helpful in office hours. It's not that there's anything wrong with him as a person; he's a great guy. DeKleine is one of the worst professors I've ever had. One of the people below had it right; he must kill forests full of trees with the amount of handouts and quizes he gives out. The handouts and his horrible and boring lectures don't help at all. If you want to succeed in his class you have to read the book. The only reason people attend his lectures is because there are daily quizes. His only positive is that he's willing to help, but when you ask him a question, he struggles with it for a long time and usually doesn't end up answering the original question. I've also never had a professor make so many arithmetic mistakes while doing problems. His exams aren't too bad, but half the battle is figuring out what the question is asking for. He made a relatively easy subject like linear analysis much more complicated than it had to be.

This guy is a super douche bag. His grading scheme is utterly ridiculous, one in which very little partial credit is given. Either you get the problem right or you don't. For example I got a B- on the first midterm, and the only mistake I made was I forgot a minus sign. He docked me 17 pts for that! That being said, the class is pretty easy, and his lectures are completely worthless, but you have to go cause he has daily quizzes.

Professor DeKleine presents the material clearly and his tests are straitforward. His class prepares you perfectly for Stat 252 and I highly recommend taking him.

Art is a good teacher. He will do anything to make you understand the material. If you listen in class, all you must do is look over the homework, and not even do it, and do well in his class. His grading system is great, 3 midterms, he drops the worst. Get him.

Art is a very nice man and his grading policy is extremely generous, but he does not teach the material well at all. I would advice those taking STAT 251 to only go to class when quizes are being given. The lectures just confuse what the book has tryed to lay out for you. Everything is strait our of the book so if you read it and do the sample problems, the tests are a snap. Art does not lecture well at all so if you can avoid going to class, do so.

Professor DeKleine is a great prof! He's pretty easy on his grading too. You take 3 midterms only 2 counts and a final. Plus you have quizs but he gives you a schedule when they are. His grading scale is pretty easy, basically if you got an A on the final. You'll get an A in his class. He didn't really teach a lot of things you basically learn it on your own. I suggest doing the homework and you'll be fine. If you want a pretty easy class and don't like math as much, you could get a fairly good grade in this class.

If you get this guy for a teacher you seriously need to GET OUT. He's the worst. Unless you're a statistician you need to get another teacher. This guy gives to quizes a week that aren't very hard but he DOES NOT teach the material. People asked questions and he explained something else that was totally irrevelant to the topic at hand. I can't stress enough how you need to get out of this class. I'm surprised this guy is allowed to teach. If you go to class you will be more confused...trust me. I didn't get a bad grade, but I didn't get a good grade. This class was the worst.

This guy is a better grandpa than a teacher. People like him because he'll coddle you in office hours, but it won't help - HE"S FRIGGEN SENILE. His reaction time can be measured by the clock on the wall and he does nothing but read the book to you in class. Like I said.. like a grandpa reading his class to sleep. I had important questions about possible new theories I had for the subject, yet he was too slow to talk to... I didn't even feel like I was talking to someone as educated as an instructor let alone an instructor in the field I was talking to.. I'm sorry to say it to someone who I'll admit is a "nice guy," he simply doesn't have what it takes to teach any class you want to LEARN in (sorry if I missed the boat, but I entered college mistakenly thinking that was the point..)

A pretty decent teacher. If you have had no calculus whatsoever, it may be pretty difficult at first because it goes so fast. But he does a good job at trying to keep students caught up. A very nice guy in person. Very approachable.

DeKleine is an excellent professor. In fact, he is the best math teacher that i have ever had. He may be one of the best professors at Cal Poly. He is extremely helpful during office hours and practically makes his schedule to fit yours. He gives about twenty quizes and three midterms, which are all relatively easy. He teaches the material well, and stresses the main concepts. I would definitely recommend taking him for any math class. My only concern is that since his class is relatively easy, that many people in his class won't be adequetely prepared for Calculus II.

Probably one of the better math professors at Cal Poly. Despite my grade, his course if fairly easy. He gives you 20 quizzes, 3 midterms(lowest one is dropped), and a final exam. His exam was far more difficult then his midterms so be prepared. He tells you what's going to be on the tests so you should do well. You have 2-4 quizzes each week so stay on task. They can really hurt you in the end. Overall a good guy and a great teacher.

Dr Dekleine is a great professor. He doesn't grade homework, but has weekly quizzes and board work for you to do. He is certainly hand-out happy though. He tries very hard to help all students succeed and explain new concepts in ways we all can understand. His midterm was fair and medium difficulty. The final is a lot harder than the quizzes or midterm, but was still fair and right out of the homeworks. This is my second time taking this class and even though I got a C, I still feel confident enough to explain most of the problems to another student. The last time I took this class, I had no clue what was going on. I just sort of blanked on the final. Homework is very time consuming for this class. I reccommend trying to work only the problems you think you're unsure on rather than those you feel pretty confident with. Also, DON'T GET BEHIND!!! It's very easy to fall behind in this class as it moves quickly. Dr. Dekleine is very approachable and will spend extra time in office hours if necessary to help you succeed. He never makes you feel stupid. I reccommend him to everyone. I'd love to take him again. He does get confused at the board sometimes though.
