Professor Guyader was easily the least helpful professor I've had so far. Multiple times per class period, he seemed to intentionally withhold necessary pieces of information that were required to complete the lab. Also, his grading of the lab reports does not make sense for the course, as he seems to grade solely based on grammar and organization, as opposed to actual correct data and understanding of the lab. Having said this, I believe he would make an excellent Technical Writing professor, as the formatting of the lab reports appears to be the only aspect of the class he pays attention to. During multiple labs, Professor Guyader came to class unprepared, without even knowing what material the pieces of metal we were testing were made out of. Finally, be prepared to try to decode his cryptic speaking style, as he pauses and completely changes his thought every other sentence.

Guyader is a really fair teacher - usually a quiz once a week and then homework due the next class period. Really easy grader on the homework and will usually give you the benefit of the doubt on the quizzes. I wasn't that well prepared for the final, but it wasn't worth that much of the overall grade so it didn't matter. I think that the other teacher who teaches 204 will better prepare you for the common final, but your grade going into the final will be significantly lower.

Guyader is super redundant and continuously goes over the easy aspects of the class. He neglects going over the parts of the class that people don't understand. His lectures are super easy and he makes you feel like you understand the material and then he assigns problems for homework that youve never even seen. Most of his lectures are wasted as he constantly reviews easy ME 211 type questions. Definitely one of the worst professor's I've had at poly.

Lectures practically teach you nothing. He is not helpful when asking questions and rather arrogantly makes you feel dumb for asking a question. Does not prepare you for the common final, and most of the learning each week unfortunately must be done by you because he fails to actually teach during his activity sections.

Guyader's number one goal was to try and help his students understand the material. He clearly went over notes and had multiple ways to explain what he was doing. Overall, he did cover mostly easy-medium problems but that provided a strong base for the harder problems. HW about once a week that wasn't bad at all which he graded very easy. The final was the hardest part of the class but it was manageable and not that hard if you studied and did the work throughout the year. Overall, very helpful guy that tried his best to help students with extra office hours and extremely in-depth HW solutions.

Although very versed in the material for CE 207, Professor Guyader is almost too versed in the material which inhibits him from presenting it clearly to 170 undergraduates. Two problems with the course, it has been reduced to 2-units without a change in material, and it is now a once-weekly 170+ person lecture, up from the previous 3x per week 40-50 person lecture. This is too many people and not enough time to cover all the material in this course. Professor Guyader also goes too far in-depth into the theory of the class content and not so much the practicality. That being said, most of that is due to lack of lecture time available. His tests are also incredibly hard, long, and do not resemble much of the practice material released to students. Average Professor that does not get to use his full abilities due to time constraints, and makes the class far more complicated than it needs to be.

Guyader was probably one of the worst professors i've ever had. The few times that i did go to class he stuck examples from the book or examples that he had already written out under the document camera and basically said "this is how you do it" with little to no explanation. It is impossible to learn how to do a problem when he doesn't physically go through the steps with us. He assigned a fair amount of homework each week that you could only turn in at lecture which was at 7am so I ended up not turning in the majority of the homework. The midterm was pretty difficult given that I was only able to finish half of it in the 50 minute period (although i got most everything i wrote down correct). The final was not horrible but it was also very long. The only reason i did okay in this class was because i read every chapter/section that we covered (which he is not clear at all as to which ones we actually do cover) and went through every example problem. Guyader's style of teaching made it impossible to understand the material, it was just not helpful (hence why i stopped going to class). So if you are the type of person that likes to read the book and can fully teach yourself the subject then guyader would be fine. But if you need a professor that you can actually learn from, take another section.

I would not recommend this professor whatsoever, although for 207 you really don't have a choice. The way he teaches is just really poorly structured, and it's all done at 7 am which makes it even harder. He will have all notes written out before the lecture and quickly alternate pieces of paper with a ton of calculations under the doc cam. I always tried to take notes but never once was able to fully copy down a problem. it's also pretty painful when he tries to be funny but that's unrelated to the course.

I don't understand the structure of this course; 1 lecture a week at 7am at 2 units with a load of a 3 unit course. You get more learning done in recitation than you do going to the lecture. Lecture is once a week with pre-written notes that fly past you on a projector screen. He has changed the format from 1 midterm to 3 quizes. The quizes are ridiculous in reference to the crap lectures (which you don't learn from at 7am and with slides being thrown out you with zero to no explanation). I read the warnings on Poly Learn but I decided to take him anyway. BIG mistake. Take this course at Cuesta College if you can.

Guyader is a piece of trash. his lectures are pointless; he shows partial solutions for 5 seconds before going to the next problem. i literally stopped taking notes (all your learning is done through hw). even some of the recitation leaders are trash, it's pretty unfair. some sections get the concepts and others don't. guyader even blamed me for cheating on a hw solution and claimed some students cheated on the midterm. pretty fucked up dude.

If you are taking CE 207, odds are you will have it with Guyader. This allows him to play god the entirety of the quarter, when it comes to being vague and unhelpful during office hours and class, taking unfair amounts of points off of midterms, and leading you to believe that he is god's gift to this earth. The best thing you can do is format your homework well, hope that you have a helpful recitation leader (if this means switching sections, this is 100% worth it), and overall trying to avoid him and his 7am class. Best of luck friends

I did not enjoy having Guyader as a professor. His lectures were, as many have said, pointless. All learning will be done in the recitations and that will depend on whether you have a competent TA or not. Over the course of the quarter I was acing everything. I went into the final with over 100% in the class and came out with a B. It was incredibly long and he put problems that were not like the midterm or homework. I was comfortable with the material but spent too much time on problems I hadn't seen before. I ended up not finishing. I recommend doing the higher point problems first; work from back to front. If you study thoroughly for the final, you should have an easy time with it. Good luck.

GARBAGE. Guyader is the only option for this class, which is very unfortunate. He goes unbelievably fast during the 1 hour weekly lecture, to the point where you won't learn or retain anything valuable. You'll do all your learning in the 2 hour recitation, so go to those. There's homework due once a week, and you truly should try to do the homework on your own. That being said, the solutions for his homework are out there; just ask friends who have taken the class previously for them. His 3 "mini midterms" weren't too difficult as long as you pay attention during recitation. Final is rough, and 50% of your grade. Take Htet Htet for recitation! Good luck.

Utterly useless in lecture. I only bothered to go to the 7am lecture because that's where you turn in the graded homework. Otherwise I would have always skipped, because I never got anything out of it. He is downright awful at presenting the material in an understandable way, and fails miserably at understanding our difficulties. The activity section with the TA is where you'll get all your learning done. Always go to the activity. The lecture, taught by Guyader, is garbage.

As the previous review stated, I wouldn't have gone to the 7am lecture unless I had to turn in homework. The lecture covered the theoretical stuff, but that wasn't needed for the course and it was quickly presented instead of derived, leaving a lot to be explained. Also, the final was significantly harder than the midterms, be ready for that.

Somehow I managed to take 207 the quarter it switched structure. Now, instead of a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour activity with grad students (where you actually learn the material), it's a three hour agonizingly boring lecture with Guayder. There are no words in the english language to explain how boring of a professor Guayder is. There is so much wrong with how he preaches this class, but it's not worth getting into. So here's the thing. I don't know where to start. Guyader has somehow managed to be both super creepy towards his students and also treat as like preschoolers. Preschoolers who should be able to complete a 3 problem midterm in 18 minutes. His lectures are LITERALLY 3 hours every week, but somehow I walk out with less of an understanding of the material then when I walked in. Worse than that, HE LITERALLY SCRIPTS HIS JOKES. At least every class gets the same experience, or should I say excruciatingly painful assault to their ears. Some people giggle because they are so uncomfortable since he "pauses for effect" and then makes comment like "the other class liked it"... Most of us just stare at him with a defeated hatred radiating out of their eyes. Currently everyone, except for those students able to completely teach themselves the material (everyone knows those students), are doing poorly. He will give you an F on the midterm for making one mistake. Overall, prepare to suffer. I hope you make it out without destroying your life and GPA for a 2 unit class.

By far, unchallenged, the most awful professor and human being I have ever met on Cal Poly and will probably ever meet in my life. 1) Has no concept of fairness; he assigns 4 different versions of quizzes and "mini-midterms" and your grade in them relies purely on which midterm you will get, and he has 4 of those bad boys. The 4 different versions in no way shape or form have relatively similar difficulties. In fact, on two of those 4 mini-midterms, some of the versions had completely different concepts and topics than what was allegedly going to be tested. He continuously tells us what can be expected on a midterm or a quiz, and believe me that is not what you will get. I had the luck of getting the worst version in 3 of those mini-midterms, and when I talked to him about in office hours, the only replies I get are extremely condescending and rude. In fact, he told me "keep your fingers crossed you get an easier mini-midterm in the next one." I can't stress enough how unfair this is; while students are done with their midterms 10 minutes early and getting very high grades on them, others like me literally need 5 extra pages worth of work to solve a particular version (for one of them in week 8 it wasn't even on the topics being tested, but something that we did in week 1 that has nothing do with it). Needless to say the averages for midterms were more scattered than himself. 2) You will literally not learn in his class, and it's a brutal 3 hours. The nice thing is he assigns 10 min breaks during this god-awful lecture; I'd usually hit my suorin so hard just to get over whatever traumatizing experience I just had with a quiz or a midterm (you have 1 every week.) All the learning you will do will be self-taught 100%. Definitely buy the book or get it online because without it, you will average 20% in the class. I have went to study sessions for the class, ESS and tutors, and come in confident about a mini-midterm only to get absolutely analed by something you have never seen before, even if you did every. single. assigned. problem like myself. 3) Don't go to his office hours, you will come out more confused than you did going in. Refer to other professors, tutors, student services, but not him. The frequent times I would go in, I would only be greeted with the most unfriendly tone, and then get shat on when I try to ask for explanations for mini-midterms. He will straight up make fun of your answers in the most condescending tone I have ever seen a professor have, extremely rude. 4) God-awful human being. Here's how his explanations go: He has his notes pre-written on his iPad that he projects onto a screen, and whizzes through them. You won't have time to copy anything down, you just have to watch his mouth and listen to what he's saying intently. Also, a lot of the learning material is color coded, and you need to know the different labels that he colors so you know how to do the problems, and he'll print out the notes for you in black and white. Genius professor I don't know how he has a PHD. 5) He also wears the same black french beret cap every day, never takes it off. I don't know why it but it pisses me off I never got to see his hair. My prediction is that his huge ego can't have his students see him balding and expose his insecurities.

Guyader does not know how to teach, grade, or even communicate to other humans for shit. I don't know how he got so far in life with whatever shitty attitude he's got right now. He has 4 mini-midterms, and if you make 1 small mistake, you're getting an F in that midterm. He doesn't carry any errors forward, doesn't even look at the technique and how students analyzed the problem. Instead, and he literally told me this word for word, he looks at numbers -- if the number he wants isn't there, the whole thing is wrong. I have seen him grade midterms and quizzes in his office hours. For 20-30 point midterms that determine a quarter of your grade, he spends an average of 2.7 seconds looking at your paper before assigning a grade, and its usually dependent on his mood at that point of time (l literally had my stopwatch out this is a real statistic.) As a guy who the last time he cried was when he was 12 to hear about his sister's car accident, his class was the closest I've ever been to crying again since then and that feeling is every week. You will put in the most effort you ever had for a 2 unit class that inevitably will single-handedly ruin your GPA for the quarter. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Graduate a year later if you have to, but don't take his class unless they change the format where you can have a TA for the 2 hour activity part of the class.

I think majority of the reviews on here aren't painting the correct picture of Guyader. Here's how it is, this is the first class that feels like a true college class. That means he isn't gonna spend time reviewing things you should have already learned in CE 204 or all of calculus. This is directed towards people who complain about him setting up an example and not finishing it all the way. The examples are for you to see how a certain method of analyzing something is done and isn't intended to be a step by step guide(r) (By the way if you have this class, be prepared for jokes like that). The homework is where you try out what you learn and shouldn't be an easy task necessarily. Then after the homework is turned he will give you those step by step solutions you are asking for. I will admit that his lectures do get boring and his jokes can be quite bad, but I think people wouldn't have such an issue with him if the class wasn't set up as a three hour lecture once a week. It's too easy to lose focus and zone out. His office hours are better if you small talk with him first or else everything is kind of awkward and uncomfortable. He loves to talk about football if you need any talking points. Overall I would say, if you felt fine in CE 204 and you feel comfortable with integrals, this class should fly by. The final was hard I have to agree, but if it's hard according to everyone then you're lucky because all of the midterms and final is curved! His grading on homework focuses a little too much on formatting, but you can't complain about getting points for putting labels on two columns!

I don't know why everyone hates him so much. He is a decent professor who knows his stuff about mechanics of materials. He is the most experienced CE207 professor and taking him will give you an advantage in the final. I have did at least 3 out of the 9 problems on the final beforehand. One of which was a quiz problem! There were four quizzes and four mini midterms, one each week, homeworks due two time a week. Expect to put in some time in this class. Not an easy A, I bombed some quizzes and had a mid B going in the final, but like I said the final was easy and bumped my grade to an A. Take him, nice guy, experienced professor!

Professor Guyader was incredibly inadequate as a professor. I learned very little in this class from the professor and had to teach myself most of the topics in order to complete the homework and pass the exams. In class, he would rarely, if ever work out the full solution to the problem. He would either put a completed solution the on the projector for a few seconds, which wasn't enough time to write down any more than the final answer; or he would set up the problem, which was the easy part we learned how to do in CE 204 and then when he got to the hard part of a problem we didn't understand, he would say "I'll leave this part for you guys to do." This gave me the impression that he could not personally solve the problems he was asking us to complete. His lectures were poorly structured and were not the appropriate length for the amount of class time we had each day. I did not attend his office hours due to the other students in the class; I routinely heard how he was disrespectful and unhelpful during office hours. I continually heard how he was condescending and rude to students who attended his office hours and would belittle those who asked him questions. Additionally, he gave us a quiz or midterm every time we met, this did not give us enough time to work on topic comprehension or ask questions after attempting the homework sets. He would usually make multiple versions of the quiz with significantly different levels of difficulty, such that some students were able to finish in about five minutes, while others would be down to the last minute or even not have enough time to complete all of the questions. In terms of professionality and mutual respect, Professor Guyader also falls short of the level I have become accustomed to here at Cal Poly. Professor Guyader routinely treats his students as though they are small children. He refers to the concavity of a beam as a "happy beam" or a "sad beam", this would be appropriate for teaching elementary school students but is very demeaning to college engineering students. He would also frequently spend class time talking about his twitter pages or projecting them on the screen and perusing around to show off his tweets to us. Professor Guyader was ineffective when it came to answering students questions and often students would be more confused after he answered. He did not appear to have received much education or training in civil engineering before teaching this class. His lectures and solutions seemed to be pulled from the internet, not created or understood by him; if students asked him to clarify or justify a step, he did not seem to know the answer and would usually deflect the question. Meeting for three-hours once a week was not an effective class structure, it was very difficult to pay attention and stay motivated for that long making it a poor learning environment. Either a more effective lecture style, separating the activity with a different instructor, or spreading out the lecture through the week would be much more helpful. Additionally, the activity section was just two hours of lecture, so we should receive credit for the three hours of lecture we attended. This two-unit class assigned at least ten hours of homework per week, which is far more than most of my four-unit classes assigned. He also did not adequately prepare us for the common final. One of the 8 questions on the final was on a topic he never even mentioned in class. The week before the final he added an extra equation to the equation sheet we would be given for the final, but never told us what it was used for or how to use it. Overall, this has been the most poorly structured and instructed course I have taken at Cal Poly so far. The textbook was not very helpful and was rarely referenced by the professor so it was difficult to track where to look for help when the in-class instruction was inadequate.

Guyader is truly just a terrible professor in every aspect of his teaching. His hand-written notes are sloppy, disorganized, and are not in-depth enough for a class this difficult. When going over the notes in class, he spends very little time explaining his notes, the concepts, or the practice problems. When asked a question, Guyader will often sound personally offended/defensive, and offer a poor explanation without much reasoning to back it up. If pressed further, he will actually become annoyed with you for your lack of understanding and will say "This is not what you should be hung up on." This lack of explanations and good notes makes the assigned homework very difficult, and Guyader is not very helpful in his office hours. Finally, Guyader never gives enough time for his students to complete quizzes or tests, and students are often left scrambling to get any partial credit. If you are caught writing 1 second after he says "Pencils down", he will write you up for an Academic Dishonesty report, and then say "You have a problem and I am doing this for your own good."

Throughout my two years at Cal Poly, I have yet to have a Professor that consistently lies about difficulty of assignments and quizzes as much as Guyader. I came out of CE 204 with an A and I am constantly confused in this class. I thought about dropping three weeks in. It is such a bummer that Cal Poly lets him hold a monopoly over this class. He always says the class is going to end an hour early which is a complete lie because everyone stays the full three hours every time. Unfortunately, I had to have Guyader twice (ME 212 and then CE 207). I have never had such a strong dislike for any professor/teacher. He is genuinely so unpleasant and condescending, and he never takes a second to understand any questions he is asked before giving a disapproving look and a smug response that helps in no way. I spent 5 minutes once trying to explain a question that he ultimately never answered because he didn't take the time to listen, and when he walked away the person next to me quickly leaned over explained it in about 10 seconds. I hated him coming out of ME 212, but I thought I would give him a genuine, open second chance considering he was my only choice for CE 207. He proved himself to be my least favorite professor in both occasions. His lectures are awful and he does not present material clearly. He never actually explains what we are doing and jumps into random example problems that are pre-solved as he clicks away at his iPad to reveal steps at a pace that is far too fast for anyone who is seeing that material for the first time. He NEVER gives enough time for anything (quizzes, midterms, in-class problems to turn in). He one time took 6 weeks to respond to one of my emails about a homework grade, said "sorry for the delayed response," and then essentially told me that I "shouldn't worry so much" and that he couldn't help me. I don't usually go to office hours, but I went probably one time each in the classes I took with him for very specific concerns, and both times I left irritated and confused. Realistically, I am the type of person that tends to teach myself everything anyway, and although having a good professor in a class is a bonus, I can usually get by on my own no matter who my professor is. Guyader is the exception. He actively makes me not want to try in the class, not want to care about the material, and not pay attention. Overall, lacking in pretty much every aspect of a professor.

From what I can tell, Guyader has been seriously trying to improve his class based on his class feedback. His class starts out really crazy and confusing simply due to the sheer amount of things he tells you the first day and his somewhat-scattered way of speaking, but after that things start to make sense regarding his scheduling of work, online quizzes, etc. His grading seems to be fair for the most part now, and homework/quizzes/midterm are all about the same difficulty, plus or minus complexity. Homework load is fair, about 6 problems a week. Because this class is now structured as a three-hour block of time once a week, he is able to slow down and explain his lectures more, though sometimes he still rushes despite the fact that there are two hours left in class. He tries to combat this by giving you a printed set of notes that you basically just fill in yourself while he lectures, which is helpful except when he omits certain details from the notes. He seriously knows his stuff, but he's not always able to communicate it clearly, and sometimes even seems to be annoyed answering student questions. He did make posters explaining every topic in class and color-codes his notes, which could be helpful to some, but I can honestly say that I never used the posters. Overall, I appreciate that he at least seems to be trying to take his criticisms and rectify them, and for that I would say that he's about average.

Bro this guy is whack. Sloppy, disorganized notes and you have to sit through 3 hours of his lecture. His grading policy is just weird, he arbitrarily takes off points and has a fetish for some random format that he constantly enforces. While the material is not necessarily the hardest, understand that you will have to spend unnecessary time teaching it to yourself, while it is a 2 unit class. His beret cap is trash, and his voice and style of addressing students are reminiscent of an elementary teacher, while his grading is not. His hand motions make me question the guy, and it is a huge drain on you to sit through 3 hours of him drawling about his whack ass blue saw, and petty attempts to have a social media influence. Bro, you're old and annoying, stop requesting your students to give you followers and actually present notes and walk through example problems, not just shove your incoherent scribbles for 10 seconds on the projector. CE department, revert back to the conventional activity section with grad students, not a 3 hour block with this annoying dude.

Relax, Guyader is not a terrible professor... He may be a little awkward and some people may find him boring, but I would highly recommend taking him if you can. This quarter we had a 3-hour block once a week. The first two hours were lecture and the last hour or less was scribbling as fast as you could to figure out/complete some in-class problems. And don't worry, he grades VERY lightly on the in-class stuff.

i enjoyed this class. andy did get distracted by football and he wasn't there for more than half of the activities but he is a good teacher. if you have questions it's good to go to office hours, he may not have looked at the homework when you get there but by the time you leave you are almost guaranteed to have all of the correct answers. he likes to give quizzes but he is not a horribly hard grader....if everyone does bad he's not likely to count it. do the homework early so you have to time to go to office hours and pay attention in class. on the activities if you have any questions just ask, he's more than willing to explain the activity over and over again to make sure you get it. i left the class feeling that i have a solid understanding of the material and unlike other professors his homework and activities are done after you learn the material. other professors did activities on subjects that they were going to teach so it was rather complicated. andy may be a bit tricky on tests but he's a good teacher, take him if you can.

Calling Andy Guyader a jerk is way off base. Guyader is anything but a jerk. In fact he is very friendly and fair professor. Yes, his lectures do sometimes go over the heads of many people in the class, but many of them were very helpful. He is firm but fair on grading assignments and tests. When I took his class he did not count a particular homework because most of the students had done it incorrectly. Most other professors would have just given everyone a bad grade on the assignment. I am also pretty sure that he curved the final grades a little bit even though he never said that he would. i found that the people who had the biggest problem with Andy and his class were the ones who spent very little time trying to learn the material on their own.

Guyader is not a good teacher! He is boring and monotone. He thinks about football all day. I herd from some friends that not only is he a bad teacher he is a horrible coach.

Very good teacher. He does things very differently from other teachers - which I liked very much. Very approachable in office hours and took a genuine interest in me. Feel free to be ready to work but you'll learn as much as you give. Good stuff here.

He is a pretty cool guy. My friend and I thought he came of as kind of a prick at the begining of the quarter, but he really grew on us. He listens to what the class is saying through his surverys that he gives about "muddy points" and the quizes aren't that bad, even though there are like 20. I didn't learn anything from my 211 professor, but I feel like I caught up from taking him. If my 211 teacher didn't suck I would've definitely got an A. Take im if you want to actually learn some useful shit.

True he may come across like a hardass football coach, but Andy definitely knows his stuff. It's unfair to say that he tries to trick you when most of his lectures stress the importance of knowing the fundamentals of ARCE. He made sure everyone was involved, and was good at gaining feedback so students (including me) didn't get left behind. At first, I struggled a lot in this course, but he was extremely helpful, and ALWAYS available for students, even during the weekends. That's not a common experience I've had at poly. You ahve homework every night, and a couple quizes each week, but the work load is manageable, and honestly forced me to understand the material better. His so called "tricks" are nothing more than using the fundamental concepts to your advantage, which students in other classes never even touched on, so if you actually want to learn some valuable information, and then take a teacher like Andy who actually knows what he's talking about and sincerely tries to help his students learn!

If Guyader was a brand of car, he would be a 2003 PT Cruiser. Why? Because everyone fucking hates PT Cruiser. He thinks he's super cool, but in reality he's a passive aggressive shitty teacher. avoid him.

Guyader is hands down the best dynamics professor in Cal Poly. I had to retake dynamics twice before and I definitely think his style of teaching will best prepare you for the common final exam. I also had him for CE 207 before; which is another story. Guyader provides helpful notes, handouts w/ sol'ns, hw sol'n. quiz, and midterm sol'n throughout the quarter. He's the kind of professor that holds your hand throughout the class. He recognizes that dynamics is a difficult class so he would lecture through his pdf slides and go through a bunch of examples every lecture. I hope he is allowed to teach this class gain. CONS: Since his quizzes and exams are extremely fair for his class; he knocks down a lot of points if you messed up a step in your analysis. TLDR; Guyader's style of teaching is the opposite of Locascio's. If you'd like a professor that spends each lecture going through 5-8 problems or a professor that spends the whole class going through 1/5 of a problem and not explaining it any further; have your choice.

Guyader probably shouldnt be teaching dynamics. He relied heavily on powerpoint presentations to teach the material and never fully worked out an example problem. His class was relatively easy but never truly prepared you for the common final. take someone else

This class was difficult enough to begin with, but Guyader made this class a lot easier to understand. His quizzes were based on some HW, so as long as you attempt to do your HW (not copying off chegg) and really try to understand the material, you have a decent chance of passing. There were 2 midterms, both based on HW. HW was assigned weekly, but plan on spending several days do this. Guyader would grade more on your procedure than on correctness. Conveyed the material well, although he made a few minor mistakes sometimes. Other than that, would recommend taking him.

Guyader is the worst professor I've ever had at Poly, and I'm not just saying that because I got a bad grade. I had him the fist quarter he ever taught dynamics so maybe he has gotten better...he gave a lot of D's and F's and only a select few received good grades. He lectured with PowerPoints only...in a dynamics class. He didn't do a single problem on the board, he only showed us problems with typed out solutions on a PowerPoint slide (and he skipped a lot of steps). Also, he didn't curve the class at all. Honestly it was absolute bullshit and if you are left with the option of taking Guyader or taking dynamics a different quarter, I would definitely wait to take it.

Did not present material clearly. Showed his slides, worked out examples, but the examples were hard to follow with skipped steps that he had trouble explaining. His class wasn't that hard. But, when I sat down with a group from other classes to study for the common final, all of us from Guyader's class realized how under-prepared we were. I scraped by with a C but I was lucky

DO NO TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He will screw you over for this class. I don't think he has ever fully worked out a problem in class. He just skims over his notes and expects you to print 500 pages for the quarter. He has an appalling personality and is just not a cool person. He should not be teaching at a college. Maybe a kindergarten class.

Guyader is actually a super nice dude, the first time I went to his office hours he got super excited and started bringing all this new gear he got to help out students. The lectures do tend to be a bit fast paced but it is extremely important to cover a ton of examples for dynamics, so I enjoyed his teaching style. If you go to class and do all the examples and homework problems, you should be set. If you don't understand a problem, go to office hours and stay until you fully understand the methods used to solve the problem.

Guyader gets a somewhat unjustified bad rap, but some of it is justified. Let's get the bad parts out of the way (and some reasons why I thought they aren't too bad all the time). Con 1: You'll be a bit bamboozled by how quickly the class moves at the beginning. Guyader isn't really the type of professor to work through a problem fully like Chen (bless up). Why it isn't so bad: By moving through material quickly he exposes you to a much wider variety of problems and encourages you to think more about problem setup and care less about the final answer (although sometimes you'll be fuming because he moves on before you write down something you needed for notes). Con 2: He makes some jokes that aren't exactly unfunny, but not exactly funny either. Nervous/pity laughter ensues. Why it isn't so bad: Name one professor that doesn't make cringe-inducing "somehow-makes-the-room-more-quiet" jokes (obviously the answer is Chen because he's great). Con 3: You'll sometimes feel like the class isn't structured very clearly, as he moves throughout the book in a fairly liberal fashion. Unlike a professor like Chen (love that guy), Guyader's lessons are built more around his feeling of the class than the textbook delineations between topics. Why it isn't so bad: Gets you to think about Dynamics problems as more than just problems with one way to solve them, which I guess is important. Con 4: He's kind of a boring version of Andy from The Office. Why it isn't so bad: Andy BERNARD punches holes in walls. Guyader would only do that to demonstrate impulse momentum. Con 5: His PolyLearn is kind of a mess. Why it isn't so bad: He uploads a bunch of supplemental problems (worked and unworked) and lecture notes. You just have to figure out what they are by clicking on them. Some straight-up pros: 1. He has a Twitter account that for the class that, aside from the occasional random inspirational tweet, is pretty useful for learning objectives/HW hints 2. He assigns around 6-12 HW problems a week. It may seem like a lot, but honestly, you need this to understand Dynamics. 3. All of his HW problems are Cheggable 4. He responds to emails quickly 5. He uploads grades quickly and regularly (the midterm was graded and posted in two days. TWO DAYS. Our GE professors can't grade scantrons in that amount of time.) 6. His office hours are pretty useful if you come in with a clear question Dynamics is a hard class. If you treat it like that and take your studying seriously, you'll pass.

I'd recommend taking the CE class instead now that Andy is the only ARCE prof teaching 302. Don't expect to follow even for a moment what goes on in lecture, much less learn anything from it. The best way to aquire the material is to read from either Hibbeler's Structural Analysis book and Ansgar's book from Fall 2004. Both are reasonably easy to follow, although I'd say the Hibbeler text covers moment distribution in better form. As for grading; you are right to tremble at the 60% weight on the final. It means that your grades on the mid terms and homework are more or less negated. Andy's finals are in breif: non-trivial. I (along with the majority of the class ) spent most of our last weeks in prepartion for this one final, neglecting food, rest and other classes, but it still was cripplingly difficult. In my case, the final cancelled out my two midterm A's and left me with an F in the class. again. Final Score: Andy: 2 Me: 0

Andy is a fun guy. Great to joke around with and even better to poke fun at. In no way would I say his class is easy...more like FRUSTRATING!!! He explains the material alright, but if you go in for the extra help he will sit with you until you understand it. I got a D on both mid terms because the tests are extremely long and all have a little trick. I did all my homework and pulled out okay on the final and got a C+ in the class. You will work your ass off, but as an ARCE you should be used to it by now.

Andy is cool. Everyone who is ragging on him is just angry because his class is hard. I'll admit his tests are very long and most of them have tricks thrown in there that almost no one sees, but I learned a lot from him. His grading can be discouraging and probably too hard, but he's a good guy. It's such a nice change from impersonal, boring, old professors. I had Andy for another class as well (ARCE 304) and he's a good professor, especially if you go into see him. I would totally take Andy again, he's a nice guy and doesn't let you skate through his classes without applying yourself.

Professor Guyader did a good job of explaining the main concepts of the class but I got lost some of the details. However, he was very helpful whenever I had any questions. The class consists of about 5 homework assignments, 5 programming assignments, and 6 or 7 quizzes. One of the quizzes gets dropped. The quizzes are pretty straight forward and if you study the lecture notes and book material you should do fine. There are no tests in this class and the final is just another quiz. The programming assignments are pretty basic although they get more complicated later on. As one of the only computer science majors in a class of mostly ARCEs I thought the programming was not hard at all. I would definitely recommend starting early because at times I needed clarification as to what I was supposed to do but once that was cleared up the programming was easy. The homeworks weren't too bad either, you can find all the answers in the book or from lecture notes. All programming in this class is done with MATLAB which is very easy to use. One warning I have to CSC/SE/CPE students is that this class will not be very challenging on the programming side so you might not get too much out of it in that respect. Overall, if you are planning to take this class I recommend professor Guyader.

This was the first class where we spent time just thinking and learned pointers on how to do it. Initially, I wished he would just tell us how to do it and get on with it but in the end it was a very useful learning process. I feel like I can really attack problems in any class after what I learned in this class. As he said "if ARCE was a gang, this is where you'd get jumped in." Hugh??? Guy needs to get more fresh air...
