Here is the deal the Burgoa. Yes, he does have a hard time explaining things sometimes. If you don't understand anything, just go to his office hours. He really does care about what he does.

Dr. Burgoa is the most helpful and patient professor I've ever had. He takes time to explain confusing labs and is willing to help students with their homework. If you don't understand something, make sure you go to his office because it is easy to get points taken off homework and labs for lame reasons. Study past and present labs, in addition to past homeworks, before quizzes.

This class was pretty fun. You get to go out to the cow fields with all this expensive equipment and measure it in all these different ways. Its fun in that its not your typical class. Burgoa is a really funny guy and he knows his stuff, but sometimes he doesnt explain the labs very well. But if you have any common sense in your brain you will be able to figure out how to use the equipment and complete the lab. He is pretty picky when he grades the labs, but you get used to it and its a pretty simple format.

Ben is a really cool guy. He is fun and easy going. However, he is not very good at communicating with his students. He will tell you he wants you to do something one way, then gives you a bad grade and tells you he wants it in an entirely different way. He is more than willing to help you outside the classroom and I suggest going to office hours.

"No soup for you." Burgoa was a cool guy, but he did not do a good job of presenting the material. I have gotten through Calculus, Physics, and Statics, but Burgoa some how found ways to confuse me with surveying, which is basically simple geometry and arithmetic. The class is A LOT of work for 2 units, but Burgoa is a fucking crack up. Everyone just fucked around and made fun of Burgoa, but he just dished out wise cracks, right back at us. He's a character, which made up for his lack of teaching clearly. Don't worry about your grade b/c I did for a while but ended up w/ a B (and I did the bare minimum)

After reading all of these ratings of Dr. Burgoa I was more than intimidated when starting the class. I am horrible at math and I knew the irrigation class was very math oriented. Not only did help me through the math during his office hours, his worksheets that he handed out for practice during the class helped me a lot too. I think he presented the material in a way for his students to fully understand what was going to be on the exams. My only complaint would be that he should have posted some of the longer powerpoint lectures on blackboard for more review after class. You really have to scribble down the notes because he goes rather quickly over some of the material (i was also in the summer class so that might have been why) Also, the lab quizzes kind of sucked. If you have to take this teacher, don't fret!! He is really not that bad and I learned a lot of useful information.

He is probably the worst professor you will take. The class itself is not that difficult but he finds ways to not give you credit for ridiculous reasons such as not liking the overall "look" of your design.

Burgoa is so cool. This teacher is funny and enjoyable to be in class with. He is very helpful with homwork and testing. He really takes the time to make you understand the material and he is a really fair grader. I would reccomend this guy hands down. He is the best!

Dr. Burgoa is an entertaining, knowledgeable teacher. Hes tries to get us to think and figure things out for ourselves, which is very good. However, he is not affraid to make one feel like a complete idiot for saying the wrong answer in class or asking a question that he feels is a stupid one. He completely ridiculed and made fun of a student in class one day for saying the wrong answer, but I've also seen him be incredibly patient with students. He moves from one extreme to the other rapidly and with great ease.

Dr. Burgoa overall is a very good teacher. I had no appreciation nor knowledge of water issues/irrigation before this class and I came out learning quite a bit. Dr. Burgoa has a lecture format that uses overhead projector slides (probably the same lecture he's done for the past 5 years) and calculations on the board. There is quite a bit of math in this course, so be sure to brush up on your arithmetic. He does examples of most of the homework problems before the homework is do; so you have a clue how to do it. The day homework is due he also does a few from the homework on the board before you turn it in. That said you have to do the homework each week - if not it will really affect your grade. If you are stuck on problems, go to his office hours where he is extremely helpful. He wants you to do well in the class. For each exam there is a test bank of questions he gives you access to to study. If you take the time to study the homework and review the practice problems and understand them before the test you will do fine (there aren't surprises on the tests - you just have to do the work). There is a hefty paper due towards the end of the course that will take a chunk of time. He is a stickler for format - make sure you do exactly what is on the outline for the paper (I got marked off 10 points out of 100 for not putting a source in my bibliography). All in all it was a good class and he is a good professor. FYI - when you register for the lab make sure you know which one is geared for EHS students and which one is geared for Crops/Ag students. You can take either one, but one focuses on large scale crops and the other focuses on small scale home landscapes, golf courses, etc.

"NO soup FOR YOU" is most accurate. This professor is very difficult to understand. He does not speak English properly and unlike some people who aware of this, are compassionate and take the time to help others understand them, he does not. When you take this class, you feel hammered by the workload of the lecture and the Lab, so you better keep up. I took this class at nine in the morning and the lab at 8 and it's miserable. He quizzes with a lot of calculations, you are just not ready 1st thing. Also, sometimes he goes over it and basically gives you the answers but then the next time he'll just collect it without warning you. His tests are frequent and like his lectures are not clear at all. If there was a way to avoid this guy I would. The way he talks to students and his attitude toward them is demeaning and unkind. He just does not foster love of learning, when in reality this subject is very important.

Basically, this guy is a domineering jerk who spends more time teaching the class about how stupid we are, than he does teaching us how to do things the right way- Which to me, is a great example of a bad professor. It's an interesting subject matter, but a dreadful class due to his abrasive, uncompromising teaching style and personality. He moves through lectures quite fast, doesn't give especially clear explainations on how to do any of the math, and is great at ruining a perfectly good morning. I'll agree that he cracks alot of jokes, but I cant agree that theres anything funny about this guy... Quote of the year---> "Hold on, let me find some kids who look confused." -the thing is, he did that not to help them figure things out, but to show the rest of the class that these kids were wrong...Interesting style of teaching, huh? Avoid this professor if you know whats good for ya. But if you do get stuck with him, just make sure you follow his directions exactly as presented-he seems to care more about that than anything else.

Many students talk about how bad Burgoa is, but I've found if you really pay attention in class and show a genuine interest you won't have any problems. (this doesn't mean you'll get an "A", but it will make your life easier) Just do what he asks of you, come to class on time, pay attention, go to his office hours, and actually study and do homework. He can get loud and frustrated (at times slightly demeaning) in class when explaining a topic, but at least he is passionate about it! He is totally available for office hours and willing to help. Is accent can get in the way at times, but I don't feel like it has been a major problem. Just be a good student and he'll be a good teacher.

This guy just handed back incomplete 60 papers to 60 students who he says did not follow the directions. Go figure that he didn't think it could have been his directions. The tests are passable but extremely misleading. If you think your studying the right material look for something else because that one note paper that you lost from Friday morning when you were hungover, thats the test. Nothing is straight forward about this class but some of the sentences that Burgoa can put together make class time entertaining. The class could be taught better.

Burgoa knows his stuff, he is very interested in what he does, he just has no idea how to teach. He uses scare tactics and impossible homeworks to prove to the class that he knows more than anyone? DUH. He is a professor, he has to know more than students. All the advice I can give you is do not take the class unless you HAVE TO and prepare to be emotionally abused over a 10 week period if you do. He does give straightforward tests, but only because he does not teach you in class, and tells you to copy old tests. He has no interest in answering questions, or listening to clarification. He will laugh at you and move on. Also, it is impossible to get on his good side once you have messed up once... as I have observed, so get on his good side from day one. He also likes girls much more than guys.... sorry boys.

This class could have been much more useful than it was. Burgoa specifically tells students to find tests from previous quarters to study for tests, and basically memorize the information so you can spit it out in 50 minutes. He is solely concerned with being able to complete calculations within a given time, and not actually learning/comprehending the information. The tests are manageable with old tests, and they are a necessity since most of the information on the tests were never reviewed in class. I taught myself how to do most of the calculations. It is essential to get on his good side, or else you're in for a rough quarter of humiliation in front of the class. He verbally abused many students who asked questions. It was inappropriate and completely unnecessary.

Burgoa really does spend a good deal of time telling the class how stupid they are. He verbally abuses students as stated in other posts. I wouldn\'t suggest taking this instructor unless you\'re cool with being treated like a 2nd grader.

Whoever believes this guy truly wants to help his students needs to reevaluate their judgement. He gives daily quizzes for a class that honestly, isn\'t that hard. The hardest part about this class was waking up at 7 am three times a week, and lets face it, I wouldn\'t get up for this class if he didn\'t give quizzes. He refuses to post notes online and treats students like they\'re retarded, as if hes some monumental genius and his subject/topic is so tough. Onto another note, a helpful professor? I got injured in the 7th week of my quarter and he refused to give me an I. I had a B going into the 7th week of school for his class and he recommended I withdrawed from the class. How is that even helpful? That is the definition of a professor that is too lazy to help out his student to receive a grade he deserves. He is, in every way, a freakin douchebag.

To begin, this guy dicked around with the half-retarded ag chick who sat in the front of the room. He made it seem like his class work was the equivalent of solving the human genome project and finally he made a shit storm out of any student who questioned his bullshit. Honestly, this class made me wish the Third Reich did come to power because I know a shitbag like Burgoa would have been lined up in front of the firing squad. I want my refund California State. By the way, this asshole lives in Los Osos, so if you can find his residence, shit on his lawn.

Burgoa is hands down the worst professor I have ever had at Cal Poly. Not only because of his lousy ability to present the material to his students but also for his incapability to listen and be understanding of his students. He is a genuine asshole, and on the largest power trip I have ever witnessed. Throughout the quarter I had several misunderstandings and conflicts with assignments and grades received from him that any "human" could naturally come to an even somewhat fair resolution with. Not for him though, his absolute inability to being open to what others have to say was unbelievable. Maybe this guy has experienced hard times in the past and is taking his teaching job as a way to release his anger or own lack of self confidence/respect, maybe he has a tiny weiner. Who knows. Regardless, I have never submitted anything on polyratings and never planned to in my career at cal poly because I think it is overrated and many times incorrect. However, If you are to take anyones evaluation seriously I would encourage you to do so with this one because this man is a true prick and does not deserve his job at Cal Poly. Go take your anger out somewhere else and find something that will make you happy burgoa because making half your-age students' lives miserable as well as your own is the saddest power trip I have ever experienced.

All insults aside, this class was extremely frustrating. Dr. Burgoa's inability to provide clear instructions in regards to his assignments must not only cause his students plenty of headaches, but also, himself. He cares more about how your paper is formatted than the content of your essay. Generally, I feel that reviewing a professor is a waste of my time, but this guy is supremely unreasonable and a real pain to deal with.

I started this class and thought Dr. Burgoa was a funny, misunderstood guy. Looking back on the quarter I can honestly say that he is one of the absolute worst teachers I have had not only at Cal Poly, but in my entire educational career. You will hear horrible things about this Professor before going into his class, just so you know they are all true. He refuses to put to his lectures on line, which is understandable as no one in their right mind would attend his lectures unless absolutely necessary, but will never give students adequate time to copy down information. He begrudgingly answers students questions and only in part. Unfortunately, this is the only Professor that teaches this class but just know my thoughts and prayers are with you.

The only thing I learned in this class is to never take Burgoa again. Honestly, top three worst teachers in my ENTIRE academic career. The only way he teaches is through Socratic Method, and with a class of 90+ students, that does not work. It's obvious he never reads your writing assignments as he wants everything single spaced. He's more concerned with HOW the paper looks/is formatted than the information and content presented. Such bullshit. He expects A LOT out of you, I guess because he assumes that this course is the only course his students are taking during the quarter and that we have alllllll the time in the world to work on his assignments. The lab quizzes are a lot harder than the lab itself, so prepare for that. Labs count a lot toward your grade, as does the midterm, final, and writing assignment. Midterm is very loosely based on any class material, and I'm sure the final is the same way... You also have to do a ~8 page writing assignment, but don't worry too much about that because he will never actually read it. Sucks that he's the only one who teaches this course. If I still haven't gotten my point across, I'll leave you with this anecdote: we we're going over some pretty tricky math in lecture and one student asks if he can write one part of the problem on the board. His response? "NOPE!" How the hell is he still teaching here?? Cal Poly College of Ag really needs to reevaluate him and his teaching methods as they are both downright horrible.

I played by his rules and received a B in the class. Thats what you have to do in order to be successful in his class, that is to say you have to suck is dick. He is a complete douche bag and a horrible teacher with about as much patience as a 5 year old hopped up on redbull and mountain dew. His use of the english language is that of a 4th grader and had a lot of typos in his powerpoints. I heard he did not get tenure and that is the first good call I have ever heard the powers at be of this college ever making.

I got a B which I am happy with but honestly I worked my a$$ off to get that B. this is the first quarter I have found myself complaining about professors and I know I jinxed myself in the past when I used to criticize students who blame their professors. Before this quarter, I had always believed my professors were fair and cared that I learned. This was the first quarter that I felt learning was an uphill battle and that the class was not for me to learn, it was for me to prove my resilience against unspeakable odds. If you are strong and think you are up for the challenge, take him on. Here is an anecdote for you: the one day I f***ed up royally and forgot my equation sheet (aka lifeline) before a quiz, the man literally laughed in my face. To my credit, I got a B on that quiz. End result? I will never treat anyone like he treated me and I have high self esteem knowing that I am a Titan. You could say I am a better person for taking this class, and you could also say that my suffering was cruel and unnecessary. But ha, it doesn't matter. I'm done. Are you willing to slay the dragon?
