She is incredibly cheerful and excited everyday. She enjoys teaching english and spreads that enjoyment to others. Our class was based on observation and seeing deeper. This great way to teach english, because it brings relativity and real life writting toward class. The essays and writting for class are very interesting. There is a limited about of long reading.. mostly only daily short passages with personal thoughts. I enjoy going to English 134 because of Prof. Ashley.

Instructor Ashley is such a great English teacher. She is young and bases her class on observation and relating English to everyday life. You write 4 essays, which aren't bad at all. The topics are interesting and I had an easy time writing all of them. I would recommend J. Ashley for English 134. There is no final, you watch a movie during dead week, and she is a great teacher!

There was a lot of home work in this class, but it will not make-or-break you by any means. The class was basically based on three essays, all of which were relatively easy and she was always more than happy to help you with any problems you were having with the topic.

Ashley was the best professor I had all of first year. She has a great sense of humor, and loves to point out the subtle things in life. She tends to analyze students now and then, but its only in hopes of getting to know you better. She is one of those "people" persons, she cares for her students, and encourages you to do your best along the way. Never a dull moment, Ashley is the English Professor to take. I wouldn't settle for anything less. Oh, and she's from here, lol, she knows the place well and has some nifty stories. :-) -RL

I love English, but Professor Ashley was a really bad professor. I went into the class hoping to learn tons of new information. All I learned is that high school English improved my writing abilities more than university English did. Professor Ashley never gave you any real feed back, all she would write on my paper was "yes," "exactly," or "no." This class made me feel like I was regressing in my writing abilites. I don't know what it will be like exactly for you but I feel like I am wasting my time. If you want a teacher who giggles all the time pick Professor Ashley.

First I have to say, I SUCKED at writing forever and even took English 102(remediation). I ended up with a B+ after great effort. Ask her for help on your essays because she'll tell you what is needed for a better grade! She cut lots of readings for us and allowed us to revise 3/4 essays instead of just 2. Her in class assignments don't have much of a purpose I think. However, she lets you out of class early alot. Overall I learned alot about writing essays. TAKE HER!

I really like this teacher. She was so nice and made writing a lot more fun for me. Her workload is not hard at all. We wrote 3-4 essays in her class and read one book. For our final, we wrote an easy in-class essay about the book. I would definitely recommend this teacher to any ENGL 134 student.

It\'s hard to say anything negative about Mrs. Ashley. She is pretty cool and really wants to help her students out whenever possible. There are only 3 essays plus one in class essay (final). Nice professor, easy to talk to, but such a hard grader. What I didn't like about her is that she was not straightforward with instructions when it comes to essays. And a lot of times she doesn't even know why she liked or didn't like an essay. She would show us a good essay, but then end up realizing that it's actually not that good of an essay. Overall, it's just very hard to please her. But she allows you to revise 2 out of the 3 essays, so take those chances.

Professor Ashley was ridiculously nice. She was really laid back and understanding. I never did understand her grading, though. She really looks for personality in essays and if she sees that, she'll give you a much higher grade than you deserve. Being in her class didn't seem like a pain; it was quite enjoyable, in fact. It was a pretty easy class and she let us revise two of our three essays. There was one book to read and some small reading and writing assignments. I would highly recommend taking her.

She's kind of a hard grader on your 3 major essays. I don't know how i got an A. The lectures are kind of interesting even though I hate english. She's open to ideas for lecture if they're relevant. Jennifer Ashley is a professor that is really easy to talk to, super understanding, and doesn't give you irrelevant assignments. We read 4 books over the quarter but had NO QUIZZES, NO MIDTERM, NO FINAL and had good discussions that I was actually glad to be a part of. Ashley is a really nice teacher but I had trouble figuring out how she graded her essays. Your grade is based off of three essays that she edits and gives back. We were able to re-edit them and turn them in at the end of the quarter so there's a lot of time to fix any mistakes. However, every time I would talk to Ashley about how to correct my papers, she would never give a clear response on how to make it better. With that being said, class time was pretty insignificant to your grade. We read books and had discussions but we never had any quizzes/tests and participation wasn't required. Overall, an easy teacher for a decent writer but Ashley could be difficult for those who can't write well.

Ms. Ashley was my favorite professor this quarter, the class was an 8 am on mondays and wednesdays and she always showed up cheerful and friendly. The class was mainly discussion based and although few people in my class participated in the discussions, i thoroughly enjoyed them. She is helpful with her essays and picking a topic and if you stick to the timeline and put the work into your essays you shouldn't have a hard time getting an A. She is very helpful during office hours as far as getting your english essay going and easily approachable. Take her! if you get the chance!

I'll admit I read these ratings and was scared because several of them said they don't know how she grades and that she is a harsh grader, but I didn't find that to be a problem. Every essay can be revised and she writes a lot of comments on each essay about what she thinks should change, or is good. Class ended early most of the time, so that also gives you time to talk to her about your paper and what you should improve. There are only 3 essays though and then participation, so I would spend that extra time working on improving them, since there isn't homework due that's graded besides the essays.

This class is really easy. All you have to do is 3 essays. Sometimes she allows you to redo the essay and try to get a better grade on it. There are reading assignments she assigns, but these are only for class discussions. Towards the end of the quarter, she started making our 2-hour class, a 1-hour class, which was really awesome. Definitely recommend Professor Ashely for English 134.

Professor Ashley is awesome. Very nice. Very friendly. Very straightforward. Very Fair. There was one midterm, and our final was a 10 page research paper on a topic of your choice. There were a few other shorter assignments along the way as well, like evaluating passages out of our textbook, and 2 other short papers. I enjoyed her class because she encourages you to write with your voice. She really pushed us to think outside of the "five-paragraph essay" structure that has been crammed into all our heads. Ashley is a great professor. She's upbeat, easy to get along with and is able to connect with her students. The work load for the class is pretty light and she seemed to be a pretty fair grader as well. Professor Ashley was the best teacher I have had at Cal Poly. I am a math major...so I was dreading English, but Mrs. Ashley is such a good professor that I did not mind the class too much. Her lectures are great. She likes to focus on very modern problems and materials. She even incorporates a lot of video documentaries to present common issues. Her grading is fair and she has a moderate amount of work required. I got an A while taking 20 units so anyone who tries could at least get a B. There is a long research paper and well as three other essays, but it is managable, you just have to trudge through it. I strongly recommend her!

She is a good teacher, the only problem is that I am not very good at English/writing essays, which made this class a bit tough. She grades fairly, we had easy homework assignments and had to read through two english books. The problem I found is that not having a bare bone structure to form an argumentative essay threw me off. I am used to having a structure for essays and I feel having such helps me articulate and present my evidence and ideas much more clearly. Overall a good teacher, but if you like having a structure to your writing you may find this class a bit more difficult.

She is REALLY nice...but her grading is REALLY harsh. I worked harder in this class than any of my others during the quarter and got a C+. Class felt pretty useless, I don\'t feel like we did very much in class and she liked to keep us there the full 2 hours when we could have easily been done in one. She was a nice woman who likes English, but is inconsistent. She does not tell you what she wants from a paper, just general guidelines. She marks you down for things and when you ask why, she doesnt always have a concrete answer. At one point in the quarter she showed us \"A\" examples of writing. She then proceeded to change her mind and decide she should not have given that person such a high grade. I had instances where she would change her mind about what was good or not. I took a paper in to her office hours before it was due and asked what to fix. She told me a few things, which I did, and still got a B. She seems to like a certain style of writing, but God help me I couldn\'t figure out what it was. She had some problems with clarity, in my opinion

I think Ashley's class was great for being a GE. I didn't learn too much about English, but for the first time, in a long time, I actually enjoyed reading. Literally just gives you a course packet that you read and has all your material. Two essays, and one midterm which is 30% of your grade. She pretty much makes it a class discussion so it felt like a damn COMS class. There were ~8 kids who pretty much kissed up and talked the whole time leaving room for no one else. In these discussions, she doesn't really do anything except "mhm" "yeah" "uh huh." She rips apart your essays and does not really offer any advice. Like you're pretty much lost. Professor Ashley is fairly good. She gave one 6-8 page paper and one 8-10 page paper. You can do re-writes for the first paper, and she grades pretty reasonably. Both were research papers, but she gives plenty of guidance if you ask for it. The midterm was all from lectures and can be passed with an A or B easily so long as you take a few notes and study them. There is no final, but there is an in-class essay on the last day of class based on a novel read and discussed throughout the second half of the quarter. English 145 takes work no matter which professor you have. Professor Ashley is fair teacher who is always looking to improve and is very open to student suggestions. I'd recommend her.

Her class is literally just a whole two hours of her agreeing with her students. Say anything and she'll say, "Yes, I agree." Then when you get your essays back, there is 0 constructive feedback. There's more, "Hey, look at me, I'm teaching you guys about logical fallacies. I'm intelligent." (Most people have already learned this 4xs over.) I get that it's part of the curriculum, but this professor is CLUELESS in English. She's lazy and unorganized. Her syllabus is inaccurate and her due dates are always alternating. She just tells all her students to go to the writing center because she doesn't want to read all her essays. She actually said that in class. Great f---ing professor. 10/10 would not take again. Don't recommend this class. She's an unreasonable person who knows nothing about what she's supposed to be teaching. She seems a lot more interested in telling the class about how she's gone to counseling for her marriage. Why does she think that her students would care is beyond me. She probably has one of the most fake personalities I've seen in a professor. I still got a decent grade, but if I have all this to say to her...just wow. Jennifer Ashley, I do NOT recommend. In summary... Teacher is... *Incompetent (Has no insight) *Lazy (Doesn't give constructive feedback on writing assignments) *Unprepared *Doesn't actually teach (Just writes information that we already know/been exposed to.) *Stubborn (It's her way or you fail.) *Wastes time (Tells us to read all these irrelevant articles that ends up as a one student conversation with the teacher in class. Poor moderation on professor's part.) Anyways!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET CANCER!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

Professor Ashley is excellent for English 145. She is very personable, sympathetic, and flexible. It is evident that she wants to develop a collaborative relationship with her students. She also makes the class very appropriate for a GE. I felt I gained a lot of skills in my critical thinking and logical reasoning abilities, although the class was very manageable. There was one short rhetoric book we read for the first 3 weeks of class with a quiz every week. The majority of the quarter was spent writing the Inquiry Essay. It is 10-12 pages long, however all of the major assignments throughout the quarter are steps in the process of writing the essay. Basically it's an essay you spend the whole quarter developing. The class finished with an interesting novel and a simple in-class essay about the novel. No final! It is easy to both enjoy and succeed in her class.

The whole quarter we wrote one paper. It was a ten-page research paper and she graded it extremely harshly. She will read it beforehand, but then still tell you that its bad when you submit it. She was a good teacher in class and had a good sense of humor. She was always available during office hours and would help you if you asked for it. Participation seems to be a big part of this class, though the participation is not a huge chunk of your grade. There were a few reading quizzes but we only took a few the first few weeks and she seemed to give up on them. We never got them back or were told how we did on them. She canceled class very frequently - to the point where I rarely had to go in at 8am on a Monday. Overall, she was a good teacher. I just wish that the final paper was not the only paper we had to turn in as you had no idea what she liked in writing or what she was really looking for. If you can stand listening to a professor pontificate her personal Marxist far-left views for 4 hours a week then this class might be for you. I got an A in the class, however, it wasn't the most enjoyable to sit through. She is stuck in such an echo chamber at this school, clearly being guilty of group-think which she warns you about the class, and just spills out her personal views on to what should be a neutral class. But if you can suck up and give baseless platitude filled shallow virtue signaling diatribes about the evil orange man in office she might give you an A.
