Baxley, Lara  

Like I wrote on the other page, I liked the way Dr. Baxley explained things, and she was very nice to our class as a group. Keep up the good work!

Baxley was an awesome teacher. I had her for Chem 111 Lab and she was funny, nice, and quickly got to the point of everything she taught. Lab was basically a 10 minute instruction on how to do the lab, then we actually did it and turned in the lab report before we left so there was no homework except for the short pre-labs due before every class. I definitely recommend having her for lab. ps- Wear shoes not sandals and DON'T BE LATE... she hates that

I would definitely recommend her for lab. She explains everything you have to do really clearly and her lab reenforces lecture concept which turns our very helpful. she does grade really hard.. I would always triple check my answers but she always finds some sig figs to take off points for. However, she does make you a better student, lab is hard but once you get the concept its so interesting. most definitely not a boring class, I learned a lot out of it. my next lab was so horrible I wish I had Baxley again!

the first two weeks of this class are killer. there are two labs the first week, a quiz, and a bunch of assignments. baxley started off seeming really mean and like she wasnt going to take crap from anyone. she would stop everything if just one person in the class was talking or getting a paper from their backpack. but once you get through the first couple weeks, the course and baxley get a lot better. she relaxes a lot and will actually joke around and share some laughs with everyone. she was excellent at explaining everything very clearly. her notes are very well organized and are easy to follow. she gives lots of example problems during lectures that she works out in front of you. shes always willing to answer questions during the lecture and stop everything to answer someones question. she has homework from the book but doesnt collect it, i would highly recommend doing it before quizes and tests though. her tests and quizes were for the most part not that bad, especially when you campared the average score to the average score from the other proffs. baxleys quizes and tests were almost always 10% higher. i never went to office hours but i heard she was very helpful and even gave out candy. i would not have gotten an A if i wasnt in baxley's class. im taking her again for chem 125. you cant afford not to take her! ps. she looks exactly like ellen degeneres! this doesnt have anything to do with her ability to teach, and she married and has kids, but its kinda scary.

Personally, I thought Baxley was badass. I went to office hours a lot and am terrible at most sciences but I did really well in this class. I got a 77% and yea, I did work my butt off for it, but if you are willing to do the work then she is willing to help you out. Always willing to help you understand concepts and work with you until you understand. She does make some mistakes now and then, I would recommend staying near the front of class, get to know her, get on her good side, and you will do a lot better. Tests are pretty hard, but if you study they are easily passable. Overall, a pretty good teacher I think, I would take her again for sure.

First off Chem 124 is one of the most uniportant and least relevant classes that an EE major can take. That being said . . . Baxley isn't great, but she isn't terrible. Don't expect to get an A in her class. She gives a lot of work. If you do all the work and study hard you can get a B. Her lectures are boring, but that is because it is Chem. She makes students feel pretty relaxed and she does a pretty good job of teaching a subject of almost no relevancy to a bunch of angry engineers.

The way I look at it chemistry is chemistry, it's not my favorite subject and I'm so happy it's over with. Baxley is a good professor, you can tell she loves what she does. She makes a point of learning everyone's names. She's super helpful in office hours and responds to email faster than any I know. The material she covers isn't easy you have to put effort into it but that's going to be true with any chemistry class. There's tons of worksheets and you have to check her website religiously, but once it's over... it's over.

The biggest thing I like about her was her enthusiasm. Nonetheless, on those lecture days when you have to listen to her for 2.5 hours, it can get a little trying. My biggest complaint was that she was kinda PMS-y. She got real moody and touchy if things don't go as she wanted. Stay on her good side, go to class everyday. I had a fairly high B going into the final, got a 98% on the final...and she still only gave me a B+ in the class. Probably because I missed a few Friday classes (would YOU get up for a 7:30 class that was 2.5 hours of lecture?) So, in the end- pass her over if someone better comes along - but its certainly not the end of the world if you get her.

Needs to go back to graduate school....

She has a rediculous course load, unfair grading policies, and in general is just not a pleasant person. I tried to get help from her near the end of the quarter, and all she told me to do was "more problems" and wouldnt even see me during her office hours. If you know your chemistry backwards and frontwards, you might do alright. I found mistakes on her handouts, and the "Just in time learnings" don't help out at all. Best of luck to you.

Dr. Baxley is enthusiastic about teaching chemistry but goes about it all wrong. Her powerpoint lectures are quick and brief. She is condescending to students during lecture and lab. She assigns you all the problems in the book that have the answers in the back, on top of giving a lecture worksheet that is about ten pages and also a worksheet on each topic that is twice as long. When it came time to study for the final I went to my previous chem teacher, Dr. Retsek, for help with questions I had.

Baxley is a a really cool person. she is a fun professor to have. the first test i thought the class was going to go well, but it was just all downhill from there. her grading can be tough on tests, the multiple choice is heavily wieghted and often very hard. but the written questions are resonable, the tests just seem to be to long sometimes. her lab grading is harsh, and they take at a minimum of 3 hours for the long ones, more like 5 if you want that A.

She's your aveage kind of boring teacher, test aren't really hard, Just DO THE HW problems(even though she doesnt collect it) and you will be fine

she presents everything in a good way but her midterms are hard she doesn't really give any half credit so if you take hr make sure you know your stuff

Baxley was one of the worst professors ive had at poly so far. I would do as much as possible to stay away from her, as she is not a fair grader and does a poor job of conveying material to students.

I know how to do all calculations and it's all plain and simple, but when the tests come up, she asks conceptual questions which make you wanna through the test across the class because it wasn't covered. Just avoid her, she's not good. And labs are ridicules, we do some interesting labs but when the report's due....NONE OF IT WAS COVERED! You have to google the crap yourself and hope to your mom if something relevant comes up, she's a horrible lab teacher, take the other lab class if you're stuck with her...

Dr. Baxley would give you homework examples adn worksheets that were easy to understand, and then on the midterms she would word the problems way different then how her examples were. She is easy to approach, but if you have problems with knowing how to approach problems on tests, im not sure shes the right teacher for u.

Dr. Baxley is one of the greatest teachers that i have had thus far at cal poly. She presented all the material very clearly. The explained what was going to be on all of the midterms and quizzes very thoroughly. Do not listen all of the haters they are just lazy...

I had Baxley a few years ago. Thought her class was too hard and that she was too harsh. After a couple of years of ME classes, I'm glad I had her. She doesen't spoon feed you exam questions that are just like the homeowork and makes you think. I didn't like it as a freshman, but I get it now. Take Baxley, you'll be better off for it later. She does cool demos too, and is kind of funny in lab.

Dr. Baxley is OK. Don't believe all these negative comments from teh losers in my class. I mean if you're talking or sleeping in a major's level class, you're missing stuff. Then you complain what a bad teacher she is? This isn't high school anymore, you've got to pay attention and do your homework. If you treat Dr. Baxley respectfully, and show that you're trying, she's more than willing to help you learn.

definitely take baxley. shes fair with her test and quizzes and if you study you will do just fine.

Dr. Baxley is great, I never really understood anything until I got in her class. Very helpful and great to have for lab. All the students near me think she's good too, so I don't know why her score is so low here. Don't hesitate to take her.

Although my grade doesn't reflect it (I slacked off way too much), Baxley is a really good teacher. She presents the material in an organized way, making it way easier to learn. She gives so many opportunities to practice problems with a list of homework problems (that she doesn't collect) AND worksheets. She's really approachable when it comes to questions, just be sure you know exactly what you need help on, not asking for a play-by-play on a missed lecture. And her weekly quizzes let you know what you need to work on or they're grade boosters. She drops the lowest quiz score, and if you get a higher grade on the final comparing to your lowest midterm, your grade on the final replaces the midterm grade. She really helps you out when it comes to grades and knowing the material. Take her!!

Dr. Baxley is an amazing teacher. I had her for both lecture and lab, and she was VERY fair at grading. Chem 127 can be challenging coming from high school, but she is very helpful and goes out of her way so that her students can succeed. I cannot say enough good things about her.

Solid, good professor. Teaches well. I don\'t know what the hell the person below was talking about that she picks favorites; in a class of 90 something that is hard to do. Weekly quizzes keep you on your feet, but don\'t worry too much as she drops the lowest. Easy to see and understand powerpoints. One thing: She HATES talking, and will become very rude and somewhat mean if you are talking. So don\'t. That simple. Thorough and highly knowledgeable. I recommend.

Definitely take Baxley if you have the opportunity. I thought she was an excellent teacher. She presented the material in an easy, understandable way. Although she does give a lot of assignments, quizzes, and midterms, it actually forces you to stay on top of the material, which is a good thing. Plus, if you do poorly on a midterm, all of these assignments help you pull your grade back up. You definitely have to be respectful in her class... no talking, texting, sleeping etc. But if you pay attention and take notes, there should be no problems.

She does not make it a class where \"the more prepared you are, the better you do\". More like the more you can dodge her trick questions the better you do. Also, on one of the quizzes I put two ways of solving the equation on there. She marked me off one point because one of the equations wasn\'t added up right, but the correct equation was right below it! She is STINGY with her points and is not fair. She doesn\'t give enough time for quizzes and tests. But the worst thing is that if you have above an 80% in the lab she brings you down to the 70-80% range. Not kidding. She will just take points away that you have earned. On the plus side, she\'s funny and the print out lecture outlines are VERY helpful. But I can\'t tell you how much I hate going to chem each day because she stresses us out. You should take her if you have plenty of time to study for this class. If not- TRY FOR BUSH!

In lecture Baxley can come across as unapproachable, but she is a totally different person in office hours. I went to a couple of her office hours and she rounded up my 69.7% in the class to a C. YES!

Dr. Baxley messes up a lot so if you are totally lost in Chem, don't take her. She'll mix up her numbers and tell you the wrong answers or not know how to do sig figs at all while she expects you to know everything. Her tests weren't that bad, you just have to pay attention and spend the time doing those worksheets she posts on her website. She also wants you to know a lot about equations and its relationship to graphs. Got that all down, and you're good to go. She's not that hard. I got a C because she was a biatch about not being able to make up labs. Oh, one more thing, sometimes she thinks she's funny when nobody's laughing at all.

this teacher is a horrible witch. i'm obviously not saying that because i did poorly in her class, but the only reason i did well was because i read the book and did all the problems. i even went to my old chem teacher because it is impossible to ask this woman a question wihtout getting chewed out and feeling like an idiot. if you can teach yourself chem 128 then you'll be fine but if you EVER have to ask ANY questions, do not take her. on top of the fact that she was a witch, she got hald of her own practice problems wrong, even if she worked them out before class. that's helpful...

I have never had such a horrible teacher. I'm mid way through the quarter and all ready I can't stand this person. People told me she was a bitch, and at first I didn't understand why they would say that, she seemed nice enough. But was I wrong. So wrong. She delights in verbally abusing her students. Some of the students don't mind the "I ALREADY ANSWERED THAT QUESTION", or the "IF YOU HAD BEEN PAYING ATTENTION" lines she likes to deliever. Maybe if she is mean enough those damn students will stop asking her questions! Oh teaching would be so easy if students never asked any questions! Her tests are also a complete reflection of her personality. I've never actually seen a problem and gone, "you bitch" until her first midterm. Above and beyond the worst kind of teacher. She knows the material well, she just does not know how to deal respectfully with students. She treats everyone like they are in middle school. What I can't believe is that people are actually saying nice things about her. A teacher should never ever go out of her way to make a student feel stupid, and that's what baxley get's off on.

I think Dr. Baxley is nice. She gives out suggested problems from the book and worksheets that she makes herself, and shows us in class how to solve most of the problems. The quizzes and tests are right from those problems, and she even writes where the quiz problems come from. She's really helpful in lab too, and takes the time to explain things if I'm stuck. Do the work, pay attention in class and you will do fine. There are some really mean students here at Poly!

A very good choice of professor. I would take her again if I needed to take more chemistry. Above average, probably the best person to take for the general chem series. Some say she treats the class like middle school students. If these people would stop acting like middle school students, she would stop treating them as such. Advice: DO NOT TALK ONCE CLASS HAS STARTED. She gets very angry, plus it is a bit rude anyway. Take Baxley if you can.

The rudest, most inconsiderate professor I have ever had. She treats everyone like they are in elementary school. In a lecture hall with 150+ students she will stop class and yell at someone for texting. Like, really Dr. Baxley? Why waste our class time because you cannot ignore a bad apple. Her midterms are absolute cancer. The wording is awkward and the questions are so much harder than the simple practice problems she assigns. In lab, she will do everything in her power to make sure you do not get full credit on the lab reports. "Your graph is too big" was literally one of the comments on my lab report, and in her mind warranted point deduction. Unless you are a Chem major, avoid her like the plague.

Dr. Baxley is a very interesting character. I took her for Chem 127 and Chem 128. She's helpful in office hours and really nice in lab. She TRIES to see and understand student's weaknesses but isn't that great at it. She's petty with points. She gives you points off for the stupidest things like sig. figs, your graph isn't big enough, or your graph isn't on a white background. It's true what everyone else said - SHE DOESN'T GIVE ENOUGH TIME ON TESTS AND QUIZZES. She also has vague and tricky questions on the tests. The other posts are correct - she does call you out in a 150+ person lecture to tell you to stop texting, don't put your head down, or being late. It is kinda infuriating after a while. Overall, she's a really nice person, really nice but as a teacher isn't that great. If you take her - you'll probably end up with a C.

She ISN'T a bad teacher at all. She's new to teaching at Cal Poly, and she's still getting used to the way the material is presented here. Too often I see engineers taking 124/125 who just rip on chem professors just because they're bad at chemistry themselves! She was very excited to be teaching, but it was her first time teaching 129, and you could tell. From what I gather, it takes a long time to be comfortable teaching, and she's still on the learning curve. She IS a good professor, she explains concepts clearly, and her tests were very easy. The only thing that bothered me is how much emphasis she places on sig figs. I thought they were important in chem 110. Anyway, shes a good teacher but her specialty is in BIO-chem. I am doubtful ill ever take her again, since in not a bio-chem major but if I had to I wouldn't mind.

Without a doubt, the worst teacher at Cal Poly. The problem is not with the womans knowledge of the material, but the matter it is presented. Lecture are presented in an environment, non-condusive to student interaction and office hours are even worse. Some teachers attempt to make you feel stupid for asking questions, this beast has it down to a science (no pun intended). On a serious note, there are some very good teachers to take the challenging chem courses, and this is NOT one of them.

Who ever wrote that comment was out-of-line. Comments like that should not be tolerated and are not at all helpful to future students, not mention the blantant disrespect for the Professor. Professor Baxley teaches a difficult subject and it is not surprising to me that others who got Ds or worse don't like her. She is an overall good teacher. Sometimes her lectures can be a little confusing, but she's very approachable and her office hours have always answered any questions that I've had. In lab, she explains it well, and is a fair grader with few surprises on quizzes.

For all the students that have awful things to say about Professor Baxley, they are just complaining that everything wasn't handed to them on a silver platter. Chemistry is not an easy concept and it is definitely not easy to teach. She will challenge you and will throw wrenches in on tests that you will not expect. She will have at least one or two "A" questions, which are really hard and out of the blue. However, they are NOT impossible questions and if you have worked hard and studied enough, you will be perfectly fine. Work hard and this class will be a breeze. If you are not working hard, you do not deserve to talk bad about a professor, it's not there fault you don't understand. They are just there to help you along.

I thought Baxley was a good teacher. I read these ratings before I took the class and was scared because everyone was so dramatic but she turned out to be fine. Her notes she has are clear and yes she does make a couple mistakes here and there but no one is perfect. If you do the homework she assigns and on the worksheets you will do fine. And she is helpful in her office hours. She is actually very approachable and likes to talk about other things besides school which is cool because you become comfortable with her. I would recommend her only if you do the problems because her exams are a lot of the problems she assigns with different numbers.

I liked Dr. Baxleys lectures and notes. She's pretty good for chemistry, better than the other teachers I had. She does cool experiments in class sometimes. If you do the homework, you'll do fine.

She was OK as a teacher, but her attitude put me off completely. I don't know if she realized it, but she very obviously picked favorites early on, and if you weren't one of them it was best to stay off of her radar completely. I did well in the class, but she didn't like me. When I got pneumonia, a sinus infection, and debilitating seasonal allergies that put me on bed rest for a week and a half, she had very little sympathy. She wouldn't let me redo the lab, but had me get data from someone else to write the lab up. I got 100% on the writeup, but she recorded it as a 75% because "I hadn't actually done the lab like everyone else, so naturally I couldn't get full credit like them". Besides my personal issues with her, she treated us like highschoolers in the classroom, even saying once "1,2,3...eyes on me!!" Basically, if you want to be belittled and frustrated, take a class with her.
