Best instructor that I ever had at Cal Poly. Material covered is interesting and he is well organized. Good interaction with members of the class. Deserving of outstanding teacher award. Would recommend to others.

Culver's lectures are funny and sometimes entertaining, but he covers nothing from the book. However, his test are entirely on book material, and he doesn't prepare you at all for the two tests. The homework assignments are easy, but have nothing to do with what you're learning, and that is basically my big problem with Culver...lack of learning anything. I mean, you go to the lectures, listen to him blab on about current events, then go read some chapters in the book, then do your homework assignment, and none of it connects! A good thing about this is that you actually don't have to go to the lectures at all, because you don't really learn anything in them. A word to the wise: don't buy the workbook for yourself; it costs $23 and you only use like 10 pages of it. Get together with a few other people, split the cost, and make copies, because the bookstores won't buy it back from you anyway.

Culver's lectures have NOTHING to do with his tests, which are straight out of the textbook. But, his lectures are interesting anyway, so it's worth going. Homework assignments are easy -- something's seriously wrong to not get 7/7 on them. Not a bad prof.

Dr. Culver is a brillant professor who cares a great deal about his students as well as his subject matter. My best teacher at Cal Poly thus far! I found that his humor made the 2 hr. lecture I had with him fly by. His testing is fair and his grading is pretty easy! I would highly recomend him.

Dr. Culver is a great teacher. While his lectures rarely cover what you are reading in the book they are fun and entertaining nevertheless. His class will never last the full two hours but even if it did it would go by as if you were only there for half an hour. Time really does fly by. As long as you do the little bit of reading that the course requires and pay somewhat attention during the lectures you should have no problem getting an A or a B in this class. I would recommend not only this class but Dr. Culver to anyone interested in Political Science.

If you want an A, take this class. I went about 40 percent of the time and all you really have to do is read the book. Tests are easy and all you have to do on essays is BULLSHIT. Culver loves it when you bullshit, because that's what he does in class all day. If you need some extra time and don't feel like going to class, but getting a good grade, Culver is the way to go.

Best political science teacher at poly. I highly recommend him. His lectures are interesting and it's hard to get a grade lower than an A.

Excellent professor. Clear and straighforward lecture style. Often uses humor to stress points and concepts.

Even though I received an A in Dr. Culver's class, I found him to be an unchallenging instructor who relied more on his sense of humor than substance. Much of the class dealt with superficial material and I was shocked to learn that he received the distinguished teaching award last year.

Great lecturer, uses humor to keep the class interested and involved. Tests are thourough and you have to study for them, but Dr. Culver is really fair. The papers due are only 8 pages and he grades those pretty easy.

Great teacher. I had his class at 8 am and enjoyed going to it. He is a fair grader and really helps you out if you need it. He will not grade you down if you don't agree with him, and the paper isn't too bad. The midterm and final are hard so you have to study, but fair. Definately take him!

John Culver is the greatest guy!!! He is really funny in class and not afraid to make comments that might be slightly politically incorrect. His tests are so fair, it's almost too easy. The 10-15 page paper due in the 8th week is tough, and I recommend starting it towards the beginning of the quarter and not procrastinating like I did. The material is great and Professor Culver makes it ten times better. I love this guy and wish I could adopt him as a surrogate grandfather. He is more than willing to help in office hours and will pretty much meet you there any time you need to. It is obvious that he cares a lot about his students and he is all about what he can do to help them out. Really, one of the nicest guys, not just professors, I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! Thanks for an awesome quarter John!

Excellent professor. Very interesting and creates interest in the subject (civil liberties). You dont come out of the class with a lot of solid facts, etc., but you will come out of the class wanting to learn more and you'll probably want to take another class with him. Very fair grader.

It's seriously saddening that this man only teaches one quarter out of the year. If I had known how great he was I would have definitely tried to get more classes with him. Where can I start? This was a 7 am class, and I geniunely wanted to be there. He understands student needs wonderfully, and can feel if the class isn't into it and will usually let us go early or something. As for grading, it was a midterm, final and a 10 page paper. The paper was graded in favor of the students (if you put effort into it, he will notice and grade accordingly). He doesn't pull punches on exams and expects that students understand broad general aspects of the class. The best thing about him was his ability to present materially in THE most unbiased manner I have ever seen from a POLS teacher here. He understands that there is valid points to both arguments and when dealing with controversial subjects he simply presented the facts, he didn't ram his personal agenda down your throat. He was extremely nice, approachable, and may be the best POLS professor here. TAKE HIM NEXT FALL IF HE TEACHES, AND TELL FETZER TO GIVE HIM MORE MONEY TO TEACH HERE!!!!!

I learned that if I were to take up hunting, I should shoot deer, not bears, because a bear will hunt me back if I successfully wound it. Fascinating! I didnt know that the key to production and operations management was so brutally simple!
