Not a terrible instructor, not a terrible guy. Pretty boring, which is average. He yelled at me once for not following some sort of vague instructions which he gave after we were all engrossed in the lab already. He seems tired and uninterested in us, maybe he's more energetic in higher level courses. I dislike how there are no lab reports required for this course, the grade is based entirely on these ridiculous exams, and they are graded pretty harshly.

This man should not be teaching lab. he tells the class how to do it wrong, then gets angry when you ask questions because what he said disagrees with the lab manual. He does not go over any questions with you or help you prepare for any of your lab quizes. I think I got a C on every single one. He even gave himself poison oak when we went on a hike thru Poly Canyon.

okay basically i took this class and knew it was going to be hard, but i had no idea what i was in for. the lecture is okay it realy wasnt that bad i mean ya he is boring and all you do is take notes but it was only for 50 minutes twice a week. all of his lecture tests came from the notes...nothing from the book at all so dont waste your money on it. seriously study for the lecture exams because that is what is going to boost your grade. the lab was absolutely absurd. i mean andoli knows his stuff but he has no idea how to thoroughly explain it. study from the lab manual for the quizzes...seriosuly and take notes about little things he says like "echinodermata means spiny skin" because i guarantee that will be on the quiz. a piece of advice start that stupid bug project early. it is the worst thing ever but it is worth A LOT of points. overall this was the worst class of my life and if you dont have to take it for liberal studies G.E. then DONT TAKE IT. you will regret it.

Basically, if you write good notes, you'll get a good grade on the test. All of his questions from the test come directly from the notes. The only problem that you would have, is collecting bugs. if you are willing to collect 30 types of bugs, than go for it. This was why i got such a bad grade, becauseI am horrified of bugs. He's good for lab because he won't talk the whole time. The only problem is that he is very soft spoken, which makes it hard to stay awake in class.

In his lectures, he is pretty clear on what is needed to know, and will add petty deatails or give examples you should remember for the tests. His labs are more difficult than his lectures because he doesn't write his lab practicals, he has his graduate students do them, so if you ask him what will be on the test he can't really tell you. The class is hard and becasue he can't answer many of your questions study, study, study. The bug collection is horrible. You have to collect a total of 30 bugs from at least 12 specific classes. Do it earlier rather than later (IT IS WAY TO EASY TO PUT IT OFF) because it will screw you over. It is a very large recent of your grade. However, the lab that is suppose to last from 3-6 usually only goes to 4 at the latest 4:45, so you are never spending 3 hours in there, thats a plus

Dr. Andoli looks like he could keel over dead at any moment. Suprisingly he isnt that old (mid 60s I think). The class is SUPER boring, and SUPER early. He talks and talks using outdated materials. I actually began to see the humor in his age, when on a field trip he made reference to the Orient. On the same field trip he accused a student who asked him if he had seen the latest Grey's Anatomy of being "on the flask". Seriously. There are only two teachers for the class though, and the other one wrote the lab book which is horrible, so I'd say it's probably a toss-up. Good Luck!

This class is one that you just have to bite the bullet for. It's at 7 in the morning, and Andoli is the last person that you want to see. If you go to class, you're awake, and you take notes (word for word), you will pass this class. The book was completely useless. We didn't use it once. You don't have to do the reading either. A HUGE waste of time. He is passionate about genetics, and that's about it, so just be prepared for the letdown, and you'll do ok. The tests are directly from the lecture. Pretty much anything he says/writes is fair game.

Horrible teacher. He couldn't even understand student's questions in class. He definitely needs to retire. He also was extremely rude when I tried to talk to him about my grade, and took weeks to respond back to me. I had a huge moral problem with doing the bug collection but he didn't care and kept being VERY rude. He also told the class that his tests were based on what he talked about in lectures, but when the final came around most of the stuff he had never even mentioned. Many other people in the class had this same complaint. Find a different teacher.

This class is very straightforward. He lectures for 50 minutes in a 90 minute class, you take notes, and there's three tests. I took two years of Bio in high school so it was pretty easy for me. You don't need the book unless you're really clueless. His tests are straight off the notes. I have the entire class notes if you want them; e-mail me at sgscott . . . and i can tutor.

Professor Andoli often went out of order in his lectures, was not very clear, and would refuse to answer relevant questions- even if they were relevant to test material. He also refused to meet with students after class or at a time not included in his office hours (even if a student had class during all of his office hours). Over all Dr. Andoli was not very clear or helpful and did not go out of his way to help students understand the material. He did give 5 points extra credit on each test which was helpful, but often had questions on the test which he never mentioned in lecture (even though he claimed that we would only be tested on lecture). The subject itself was fairly interesting though, and if you go to class and take careful notes it is possible to get a good grade.

I really enjoyed this class. Andoli is a quiet old man who is not demanding, and pretty interesting. The classes covered quite a bit of material, but some of it you are never even tested on. He seems to like to teach, and tries to make the classes bearable. On each test, he offers 10 points of extra credit, so you really have no excuse to get anyhthing other than an A.

being an avid purveryor of polyratings myself, I realize how overused the "this is the worst teacher I've had at poly" is. Sometimes you get the feeling that this is an exaggeration, but after six blissfull years at cal poly I can honestly say that Freddy Andoli is without a doubt the absolute worst teacher that I have had at this school. Genetics is a cutting edge and exciting topic this day in age, but Andoli managed to keep it to 1960's info. I literally took powernaps before class in order to stay awake for 2 hours of this monotone fuddyduddys ramblings, but even that couldn't keep me awake. the only advice I can give is either to wait till he retires (he's been teaching at poly since the beginning of the cold war), or implement copious amounts of no-doze, double espresso, and or speed in order to stay awake for all the "valuable" notes

This professor really is not that good. I lost interest in his class quickly because he lectures without much energy in them. He really looks like he lost the desire to teach and therefore, it has become more or less a boring class without much use. Lectures are hard to follow because he seldomly utilizes any teaching aids. So if you can, take someone else.

This class is pretty boring even though the topic has the potential to be a cutting edge breakthrough. Andoli seems to be uninterested in teaching and while he does a decent job in explaining what we need to know for the tests, he seems to be more worried about other things. His tests are pretty easy as he tells you exactly what to expect on the exam with some extra credit problems, but he is so old-schooled when it comes to teaching this class, especially since this class mostly consists of psychology majors. Take someone else for this class.

This guys seems nice but he is a terrible teacher. Like other were saying, he simply mumbles in front of the class and occasionally writes key words on the board. I think he has 10 year so we couldn't even give him an evaluation. If you are required to take this course, it really helps to have taken BIO 161 or Biochem (BIO 313, I think) because everything he attempts to teach is pretty much the same. Also, don't waste money on the textbook, it isn't good at explaining anything either. Use wikipedia or google to find stuff you don't understand.

This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He is uninterested in teaching and doesn't explain any of the concepts we discuss in class. He shows up 10 minutes late every day, gives a 15 minute break in the middle, then keeps us until the absolute last minute. He gets irritated when people ask questions and doesn't seem to care if the students understand the concepts. The book was NOT helpful, and when asked about a study guide for one of the 4 exams he said, "your notes are your study guide." It is impossible to see the diagrams he puts on the overhead, so don't even bother trying to copy them down. Overall, a tortuous class. Take it at community college if he is your only option.

In all my years of schooling, I have never had such a terrible teacher. He does not care about his students or their grades, and when you ask questions he always seems irritated to answer. Normally when I would ask a question he would cut me off mid sentence and say he would cover it "later", which he would never get around to. Every time someone asked about the material that would be on one of the exams (3 midterms, 1 final, no curve) he would say he didn't know yet and he would tell you the lecture before. On the lecture before an exam, all he will say is to bring a scantron and to study our notes- obviously, but would never demonstrate the type of questions he would be asking and what chapters in the book it coincided with. He shows up to class 10 minutes late everyday, and then takes a 15 minute break in the middle, basically wasting a half hour of my time that i would much rather just end the class earlier than sit there miserably. I am a good student, had a 3.8 last quarter and I probably have spent 8-10 hours studying for each test and I haven't missed any classes, but I have gotten C's on every test. I've never done a poly rating before but this guy is so tremendously terrible, I decided I needed to take the time to let everyone know. Please Andoli, retire already!

This is the easiest class I've ever taken at Cal Poly. This class requires that you understand simple mathematics, have a vague understanding of general biology, and that you take notes during the entire lecture. You do not need to read the book (at least I never did). I really do not get all of these rants about this professor being terrible because, honestly, there just isn't very much material that needs explaining. This stuff is so incredibly straight forward. I heard he even used to give extra credit! I feel bad for this guy because so many students spoke condescendingly towards him in class. It isn't Andoli's fault that you fail to understand simple linear equations. Take Andoli if you like easy A's.

This teacher is not interested in teaching this class. He doesn't give you an opportunity to ask questions in class if he feels that they are dumb questions even though they may be valid. He states that only lecture information will be on exams but when he gives you the exam it has questions that are not from lecture or from required reading assignments. If you can get away with taking 302 instead of 303 do it.

I am writing this evaluation not because I received a C in Dr. Andoli's class but because I disagree with Dr. Andoli's teaching philosophy. I directly heard him say to another teacher that his main focus in teaching a class is to have his students' grades follow the bell curve model. He is more concerned about assigning the correct proportion of A's, B's, C's, D's, and F's than he is in actually teaching his students the material. He must realize that presenting is not the same as teaching. I strongly recommend that you choose another instructor.

Dr. Andoli is somewhat hard to describe. Sometimes he's okay and then other times he's downright horrible. In the later part of the class when we got to the more difficult material everyone was basically confused and his reply was "Read the book." However, he is a pretty easy grader if memorizing is your thing and your a bio buff. His test are basically right of the material in the lecture. So whatever subjects he covers in class KNOW THEM. But also make sure you go over those subjects in the book it REALLY helps clearify a lot of what he says.

If you can understand what he's saying, you'll do fine, 'cause the tests are straight off the lecture (read -- no reading), but if you by chance have a question, forget about it. He seems to have memorized a list of what he wants to spit out at you, and doesn't seem to have a good handle on the subject himself. He's one of the old guard of Cal Poly's Bio Dept that just needs to go.

I took the 5-week summer session BIO 303 course with Andoli. While he's not the worst teacher I've ever had, he's far from the best. I do not remember a single question that any student asked him in class during the entire course that he actually answered. Oh sure, he'd give an answer, but it was never an answer to what the student was asking; some students tried to clarify their question, but after a second or third try, stopped trying. He also gave a long spiel in class about how we shouldn't ask questions immediately, but should read our books and then come talk to him if we still don't get the material. He started out the course by saying that he tests mostly on the notes, and that's true. In fact, I don't think I ever used the book for anything significant. The tests are four 40-point scantron exams, including the final which isn't cumulative. His class is an exercise in note taking and regurgitation, nothing more... which, being a survey class, I kinda expected. But he could at least be enthused about it.

If you can avoid this professor, do it. The material is totally straight forward and the tests come right out of lecture, but this guy is BORING. I struggled to stay awake in every class, even after intentionally taking a power nap right before class to help me stay awake. He speaks pretty quietly and is completely monotone through every lecture. He almost refuses to answer students questions, constantly telling them to wait until he's finished or to read the book before coming to him. The most irritating this was that most of the time he would not understand students' questions, no matter how loudly and clearly they were asked. The question would have to be repeated and reworded several times, sometimes with other students having to chime in to help clear up the question for him. This class is an easy A or B if you're into memorization and regurgitation, but overall it was pretty painful.

It is quite obvious that Dr. Andoli has been teaching this course for too many quarters. He seems bored by the material and so are his students. He side steps questions and avoids you if you try to meet with him at any other time than his office hour. His grading is fair but, you need to be willing to learn the material on your own with no help from him. If you are at all interested in actually learning something about genetics, I would find a different teacher.

I agree with most of what is said on here. He doesn't seem to like answering questions, clarification really isn't his thing. But seriously, this doesn't add up: 30 hours of lecture in 1 quarter--- 4 lectures on stupid punnet squares and high school pea experiments---40 mins.(last lecture of the quarter) on DNA replication, Protein Synthesis, transcription and translation--- and NO office hours between the last lecture on the final. (?) "Read the book to clarify, this will all be on the test" Sure as shootin doesn't cut it by me. He seems to have almost NO enthusiasm for what could actually be a decent course to take.

Here is the truth about Andoli: ONE OF THE WORST TEACHERS AT POLY. I dont want to be mean to the guy, but he is very unclear. He will never explain the big picture about genetics or DNA translation and transcription, just some superficial details that leave everyone confused. The class was not very in depth, BIO 151 will teach you more about genetics than this class. His tests were very challenging, but strangely, i got 2 B's and 2 D's, that doesn't make any sense. He just got an award for teaching here at poly for 35 years, and because of his tenure he wouldnt let us fill out evaluations for him or the class. The tests are almost completely off of the NOTES, all the examples, the history of genetics, etc...MEMORIZE THE NOTES. Don't buy the supplementary workbook, you wont use it. You also wont learn anything exciting about genetics like the humane genome project or cloning, so dont get your hopes up. Very boring, dont miss the lectures, and if you can keep your patience with him, you might do well.

This professor should really think about retiring. A lot of his material is outdated, he did NOT want to teach our course (said so himself at the beginning of the quarter), and was not only boring to listen to, but also nearly impossible to understand. He didn't use Power Point for his presentation or even the overhead. He pretty much just stood at the front of the class and droned on for the duration of the class, and it was up to you to write everything down after catching it from midair. Occasionally he'd write something on the board, but that was about it, and he didn't do it often enough for it to make a difference. So if you don't have a friend taking the class with you, you're SOL when you inevitably miss something he said while you were trying to write down the last one, because if you ask him to clarify or repeat, he goes off on a differnt tangent. Toward the end of the quater he had more-or-less stopped caring about teaching the class well AT ALL, making his lectures even worse. His one saving grace is that his exams were easy. 3 midterms and a final, all worth 100 points. Most of the stuff on them were things I'd learned in BIO 161, and as long as you study whatever you CAN catch from his lectures, you should be fine. However, I would SERIOUSLY encourage people not to take this professor, unless he's teaching the last class you'll need for graduation or something.

I felt like he was bored with his own material!! All he did was lecture. Didn't have any power points or visuals. Would sometimes draw a little swiggle on the whiteboard. I didn't feel like his lectures were planned at all, he would just kind of stand in front of the class and half heartedly throw information at students. He was pretty soft spoken and in a large class, hard to hear. When people did ask questions it took a long time for him to even understand what they were asking. On the midterm i asked for a clarification on one of the questions and he acted really annoyed. He also said that you have as much time on the test as you want, I was always fine on time, but another girl in my class took longer than average and he told her "if you don't know it by now you're not going to know it" which i thought was a little harsh. Over all i just felt like he didnt care about teaching. One midterm, one final.

Andoli is an old school type of professor that reads from his 70s notes and gives you updated research throughout his lectures. They are straight forward and somewhat interesting. You can tell he knows and loves herps. Just study the lecture notes for the tests and you will pass easily. Lab is much less exciting only because of the specimens you have to use to learn. IT is all memorization of family, genus and species. Spend the time in lab to recognize and learn the specimens cause you will see them on the lab tests. The optional field trip is so worth it if you like being outdoors. The Mojave desert is not vegas but it is fun and you can get so many extra credit points that can lift your grade. Plus it makes the lab final so much easier. It is worth it to go and people from previous classes go on it too because it can be a lot of fun.

Andoli is a tight, to get a good grade you go to class (every class) and take notes, and he makes it pretty obvious what you need to take notes on and then that material is on the test. His tangents are relevant and give insight to the topic being discussed. He is very confrontational, so if you have a problem it is easily fixed.

Andoli is great for herp, he knows his reptiles. Lecture is straight forward and lab is somewhat uninteresting. If you enjoy a class where you are left on your own to discuss materials with classmates this is the one. There is an optional "field trip" with extra credit. This makes up for what lec and lab are lacking.

This class is all based on a system and you need to learn it. He loves reptiles so the lectures alright plus they are only twice a week for an hour. Listen to his lectures all of his test material comes from this. You can buy the book, but its only useful in helping with the families, nothing else. KNOW THE REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN FAMILIES. You need to know them like the back of your hand for both lecture and lab tests. His labs are taught by students and are pretty straight foward: just be able to recognize the reptile/amphibian and know tis family, genus, species. If you are good at memorization, this class should be easy. Also there is an extra credit field trip to the Mojave Desert where you can get a lot of points, but it's in the Mojave Desert which sucks.

Dr. Andoli does not seem to have much interest in or concern for his students' success. He was not helpful in class - whenever someone asked him a question to clarify (because his lectures rarely made sense), he would belittle the questioner, repeat himself more slowly (if at all), and continue in his lecture. I really tried to have a good attitude toward this guy, but he made it very hard. Sadly, whenever he would leave the room for our "break", the whole class would start ranting about how ridiculous his lectures were. If you can avoid taking a class with him, I would highly recommend doing so.
