I pray you change before you get married and have children, especially if you have daughters, or even worse--sons--. Please, do not pass on such nonchalant misogynistic beliefs to other human beings. Ms. Brogno is a great Teacher. Like any of the English 134 classes you do have to write essays so there is work involved. The class involves no studying, just writing essays. There is 1 in class midterm that is not bad at all and 4 other essays out of class. The final is a portfolio that you turn in two revised papers and a revised midterm. If you do well on your essays then the midterm is the only work for this category. Overall a very fun teacher with a lot of spirit. Take her and you will love the class. The best G.E i have taken at POLY.

I normally do NOT like English, but this was the most interesting and fun class I have taken so far at poly. You have to be willing to work hard on your essays, but that pretty much goes for all English 134 classes I think. Courtney is really cool to students and never makes you feel like you're on a lower level than her. She is very approachable and always willing to help you with essays during office hours or via email. I definitely recommend her for English 134, it is a great break from the big impersonal lectures you have to take for some major classes.

Courtney is an awsome teacher, which shocked me because I hate English. She makes the class fun and interesting, which given what she has to cover is difficult to do. She is a tough grader, but she will let you revise most of your essays as many times as you want. She also will give you an extension if you need it. The first two weeks she will try to scare you into dropping, ignore it, she really isn't as mean as she wants you to believe. I thought she was awsome and would take her again for english.

Courtney is amazing. She's really funny, dorky and understanding. Her office hours helped soooooo much and she was so welcoming! She is definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had. She is a fair grader, she recognizes every student in the class and makes the environment laid-back, interesting, and friendly. I def. rec. this class because she's really fun and although the class is a lot of work (3 essays, reading every night, grammar quiz and 2 midterms on the readings) she's understanding and she'd help you if you were having problems.

she is a pretty good teacher. this class wasnt that difficult. you have to read articles a lot but they are interesting so it doesnt matter. theres always an essay due, but here is the deal. you can redo like 3 of the 5 essays you turn in for better grades. which means you just look at what she corrected, fix those problems and your grade sky rockets. i went from an F on one paper to an A-. the final is just some papers you have to turn in so that is chill. overall the class is easy, a lot of discussion in class. not to mention she is HOT!!! take this teacher

Courtney was one of the best teachers that I have ever had. She is very intimidating the first few weeks because she tries to weed out weak students. She is a very tough grader, so don't be shocked if you receive low scores on your first few papers. She assigns very abstract papers, so you MUST think outside the box to keep her entertained. Courtney was very entertaining during her lectures...she kept me laughing with her sarcastic sense of humor. She incorporates interesting materials such as Laguna Beach into her lectures and relates it to something totally different...she forces you to think deeper. I highly recommend her, but be prepared to work A LOT!!! Oh, and you can't take anything she says to you personally....she's blunt, but she's just trying to help. I loved her.

Courtney definately made class interesting and it was generally a fun enviroment to be in. However, she grades really hard on the essays and often times marks you off if your essay is too "cliche". She makes you creative in your writing and wants a lot of depth. In my opinion, id rather be in a boring class and have an easy grader but if you truely want to improve your writing take her class.

I can honestly say that Courtney was one of the best teachers I have ever had! She made me want to attend every class, which is saying a lot, especially since her class was four days a week. The class is hard, but she really makes you want to try and become a better writer. Your writing WILL improve! You write five essays throughout the quarter and have a little reading each night, but the reading is usually fairly interesting. Plus, the discussions are always fun and Courtney will tell her own stories. She usually always has something inspiring to say, or at least a good story to make you laugh. Courtney is also very helpful and has coffee hours on the weekend, aside from her office hours, to help students with their essays. The midterm and final are fairly easy as long as you read the material and listened in class. Seriously though, one of the best teachers! Take this class from her!

Courtney was really an excellent prof. I am an ME, and I wasn't really planning to put to much effort into an English class, but she really inspired me to try and do well in this course. Be warned though, she is a tough teacher. I honestly think that there was more work in her class than in all of the other classes I took, combined. But the result is clear, I am a far better writer now for taking this class. Plus, she's really hot.

For being an engineer, Brogno made me realize how important english and writing composition is to every aspect of work/education. No novels in this class, just daily essays to read but they are fairly interesting and relevant to modern society. Brogno grades tough, but you can re-write 3 of 4 essays, and then turn in a final. Make sure you attend her office hours because they help!!! She is very willing to work with anyone and greatly improved my writing. Be sure to attend class too because she takes attendance. Besides, you get like 10 min of "story time" everyday so there goes 1/5 of the class time already everyday.

I agree that Brogno is intelligent, but remember that arguments which sound well formulated are not necessarily right. In the real world she would be eaten alive. Example: At one point she proposed that we not have an army as a solution to human violence. True to her word, she is not a pushover. If you don't turn in papers on time, or come to class, or do anything remotely considered academic, you get an F. However, do not be lulled into a false sense of security by her likeable personality. There are solutions to the world's problems, but they are not supported by trivial proofs.

I fucking love Courtney!! She\'s definitely one of the best teachers I\'ve had in college and by far the hottest. She\'s definitely the chillest too. We spend the first 20 mins talking about absolutely nothing and she really tries to get to know everyone. She will definitely hold your attention the entire class because she\'s so hot and keeps you interested. In Brogno's class you will always have an essay to be working on. It takes a lot of time to get the outcome she wants. Not many kids can earn an A on their essays. Each class starts with a discussion just about your lives, the longer you talk the less lecture there will be about the nights previous readings. I enjoy how personable and chill she is. She really pushed our writing skills to improve them. I feel as if she made me a better writer for my future classes. She is also really big on grammar. As far as the reading goes, you will always have a essay in the book to to read for homework. I suggest you read it when she assigns it because if you let it accumulate you will be frustrated right before the final. Make sure you remember all off the concepts in the readings because that will also help with your final. There are no real tests except for like two finals on the readings, and you must complete a grammar project. Even though she is REALLY tough, I suggest you take her because it will benefit you in the end. Even though I didnt get the greatest grade, I can admit I lead to my own downfall. Take her!

You have to ask yourself one question before taking Courtney's 134 class. Do you actually want to learn to be a much better writer and researcher, or do you just want to slack off and take an easy class for an easy grade? If you truly want to learn, I highly recommend this class. When I first entered this class, I thought it was going to be my hardest class, and it was. But looking back on all the hard hours put into writing the five essays, I am proud and happy that I took the course. My writing has significantly improved. However, I have seen others struggle greatly in this course, and receive poor grades. If you think you are a good writer, take this class and learn something. If you suck horribly at writing, than avoid this class because even though your writing will improve, it probably sucks too much to already to receive an A or B.....you can pull a C though, but whatever the case, be ready to work your butt off.

So I'm in this class right now, and you have to be willing to work you ass off. For me, most of my high school English classes were pretty easy, and we didn't have too many assignments. This class is the complete opposite. Just when you feel like you kind of have a break from it, you have another annotated bibliography or reading or something. She truly acts as if this is the only class we have. This class takes up more time than any other class I've taken at Cal Poly; probably just as much as my three other classes combined. She really pushes you hard and the essays are not easy. FYI for the first essay, 2 people got As, 5 Bs, 7 Cs, and 8 Ds or Fs. I guess your writing skills kind of improve... but there is only so much a teacher can do to help you. Just WATCH OUT. This class is an overload.

Sure, she is good looking, but don't base your choice on this. She gives alot of homework that involves great amout of readings. You have to follow a syllabus which she provides you with at the beggining of the quarter. Sometimes, you will forget you have something due, (she might not remind you) and she WILL NOT accept it late. The class was intresting, but very strict. If you don't know what is going on in class then it can cost you. When I talked to other friends taking english 134, they told me that they're class wasn't so demanding. Althought it doesn't seem like a lot, you have to write 5 essays, oh and she gives mid-terms. You would expect one from your math class, but english. They're okay, but come on, its english. You also have to present a "grammar presentation", and you have to be creative in order to get a good grade on this. I was suprised I got a C, for I expected a B. I say, look for an easy class, after all its only a G.E. Also to add, writting for 20 minutes a day DOES NOT GET YOU AN A.

Everyone seems to talk about how they dont like courtney and I can see why. There is SOOOO much work for her class and english was my life the quarter that I took her, I always seemed to be writing essays, but now that I look back on it, it was not that bad. I was very persistant and would always go to her office with a new revision of my essay and she would help me out a lot! I started out the quarter with a D's on my first two essays, and on my last two essays I got A's, so she helped me grow greatly as a writer, so if you feel writing is something you should learn, I would take her... but just be prepared for a lot of work, 5 essays, two in class essays that are the final/midterm, and like 3-4 one page response things and a little bit of reading. Oh and on the first day she tries to scare people away, so dont be intimidated on the first day. I took the class with only two other classes that were not that difficult, so thats why I had a lot of time to write essays, which you will probably need.

This professor expects ALOT from her students but by taking her you WILL become a better writer. The lectures are more like discussion sessions, and they're actually quite enjoyable to attend. You write 4 total essays in this class with 2 opportunities to re-do (or extend the due date by a good few weeks, depending on how you look at it). Doesn't sound like much, but she's a tough grader, so expect to pour a massive amount of time into each paper. I worked my ass off in this class for an A- while my deadbeat roommate sat on his ass chunking out last-minute papers for an A under a different teacher. The truly sad part was that the his level of writing would've failed him under Courtney's grading scheme... Aside from being tough on papers, Courtney's a great teacher and her grading scheme will force you to learn through working hard. Just be careful if you already have a hectic schedule as her class is no easy GE.

(Firstly I took her 3 years ago) Courtney will push you above and beyond your expectations. She is a HARD grader but I improved my writing so much in just one quarter taking her. I read my roommates essays and she got A's on all of them from another teacher and I would have guessed that a 4th grader wrote it. She read mine and couldn't believe I could write that well (and neither could I!) and it's all thanks to Courtney helping me improve. I don't think I got an A on any essays, but they were still some of the best work I've ever done. If you have any interest in learning to write better, take this teacher. She's still young, so she hasn't become an old boring ten year teacher that doesn't give a shit... she still cares about being a great teacher and she is! Not to mention she goes above and beyond for her students with multiple office hours and a few extra hours on the weekend at a coffee shop downtown. She'll proof read your paper as many times as you need (she'll mark that shit up!) She really does care if you succeed and learn from her. The class is also very personal. We put our desks in a circle everyday and sometimes even took the class outside on nice days. It was very discussion based and it was a great environment to meet your fellow classmates (which I have found is very rare). If you want to look forward to going to class and don't mind working a little harder for a grade, take Courntney. (Yeah... she doesn't go by Ms. Brogno).

I took Mrs. Brogno last year in my first quarter here. I will start off by saying that through the sheer amount of work done, my overall writing ability got better. I wouldn't say it was the most or even too much work. Sure, I spent more time in that class than any other, but I attribute that to her making the class and its topics engaging to begin with. In addition, this class was literally only class in which I knew everyone's name and still talk to a lot of the people from that class. It was actually fun to come class, because we'd usually have a solid 20-30 minute story telling time at the start before cracking down to work. Overall, I'd say that this is a class worth taking. Like many reviews before, you have to have the mindset that you WANT to learn and improve and are WILLING to do the work to get there. I guarantee you, if you genuinely try in this class, you may not receive an A. But you will have improved, and for that I'm thankful of her class.

Plain and simple, Courtney's class is not walk in the park, especially not for a GE. However, is you are an english major or interested in writing, i highly recommend taking her class! I became such a better writer that it's insane! if you are a incoming freshman, i wouldn't take it fall quarter, because thats what i did and it was a bit of a shock to be thrown into such a demanding class. Overall her lectures are very fun/entertaining, the readings are fun to read as well, and the mid-term and final are ridiculously easy which means the three essays you do are worth a lot of your grade, however you are allowed to revise the first two(out of three) for better grades.

First thing, this teacher will assign a SHITLOAD of work for this class so if you're taking Brogno and you're a procrastinator, better get in the habit of starting your work early or else you'll end up pulling your hairs/eyeballs out trying to finish your essay the day before it's due. But your writing skills WILL improve a lot by the end of the quarter. Each essay gets revised once or twice by your classmates and you can rewrite the first two essays for a higher grade. The lectures for the class are pretty enjoyable and sometimes entertaining. Midterms and final are pretty doable, you'll get a list of the prompts and if you do an outline for each prompt, you should be ok. Also I highly recommend going to workshops to get your essays revised even more. The people in the workshops are upperclassmen english majors and are really friendly. P.S- She's pretty decent-looking for a professor :]

Courtney is so cool, interesting, and hilaroius. I loved the text book (convergences) and the other assigned readings were AMAZING. The negatives: she is a very hard grader so don\'t expect an A on any essay unless you are an OUTSTANDING writer. In fact, if you get an A on an essay in this class switch your major to English now. But no worries because you can revise the first two essays.

If you want to better your writing, take Courtney Brogno\'s class. At first, I was really nervous because she said, \"This is not an easy class. You have to work extremely hard.\" Yadda, yadda, yadda. You have 3 essays, a few random homework assignments, a TON of readings (not too boring, just some are super long), a grammar presentation (super easy- it\'s with a partner), a midterm (an in-class essay on yourself), and a grammar quiz. Her essays have no page limit and you can revise the first two. She\'s not too great with e-mailing back (even though she always says \"just shoot me an e-mail\"). I never went to her office hours, but I heard she\'s really helpful in them. I was not a good writer AT ALL, but Courtney makes you want to write better. She elimates all of the stupid things your old english teachers told you to do and encourages writing as a necessity in your future careers. If you want to take writing seriously, take Courtney. If you could care less, take Jan Zahn or someone else. If you take Courtney\'s class, I promise, you won\'t regret it.

JUST THE FACTS She has high expectations for essays which translates to lower grades. Commentary Grades aside, I have mixed feelings about the professor herself. Her brash sometimes to the point of arrogant style of interacting with her students, where she openly criticizes the weakness of their writing and condescends to the freshman students with various off-the-cuff remarks, can become tiresome and uninspiring. It seems like she is half trying to intimidate the students in hopes of getting them to write better and half stoking her fiery ego. The upside, well, she is younger and talks a lot about pop culture and seems to relate better to pop culture than other professors (I write this now as a sophomore retrospectively having taking this class my 1st quarter at poly). Her relatability to pop culture plus the first 5-20 minutes we spent every class sharing random and sometimes personal stories generally linked her students to her. At least this is my theory as to why she has garnered such a following here on polyratings because honestly, she left a bad taste in my mouth.

I have mixed feelings about Courtney. She expects a lot from her students in terms of writing (too much if you ask me, considering this is a GE and we\'re not English majors). The writing prompts are difficult and the process is time consuming. Don\'t plan on getting As on your essays unless you\'re a fabulous writer. On the bright side, she\'s a younger professor and more in tune with pop culture which made for interesting class periods. Also, she would let us out of the two-hour block a half an hour early almost every time. The midterm and final were in-class essays and pretty easy. Each student had to give a grammar presentation with a partner, and at the end of the quarter there was a grammar quiz which was also fairly easy. Courtney has very strong opinions which she tries to get you to agree with through the readings she assigns. She also calls out students in front of class which often left us uncomfortable. Courtney was awesome. A very friendly teacher who defiantly helped improve my writing. She says class is optional which is a lie because she is much nicer to you, grades easier and sometimes gives pop quizes on reading. All of the readings for her 134 class are interesting and not that long. The remainder of the class is spent writing 3 essays which go by quick and 2 in class essays on the readings for the mid term and final. Really good class set up harsh grader.

Do not take this class Courtney is awful! She started the class by voicing her opinion very strongly and she makes it clear she does not like ag majors through her actions. She only wants to hear things that go along with what she likes. If you have a different opinion then her she lets you know that you are wrong. If you think you can write a decent essay then your wrong. No matter how well your essay is if she does not like your topic or it is not her style of writing you will not get a good grade on it. The only positive is you can rewrite 2 out of the 3 essays. During office hours she will not help and makes it clear you are wasting your time. For homework you have to read long articles and there are random quizzes on them as well as an in class discussion on all of them. You have to analyze and break apart one and present it in front of the class which is not that bad but even if you do it exactly the way you are suppose to the highest grade you will get on it is a B (maybe). Midterm and final are in class essays that are on the articles you have to read. Don't take her for English no matter what!

Courtney can be either really cool or really harsh, depending on how seriously you take the class. DO NOT take this class if you expect and easy A. If you take her, always go to her office hours, since that's the only reason why I did well in the class. She's really harsh with grading but fair at the same time. She listens to her students and even lets us rewrite 2 of our 3 essays. However, if your not open to criticism, don't even think about taking her class. If she thinks your essay is crap, she'll tell you that it's crap and not think twice about voicing her opinion on it. I'm fairly open to criticism, and even I got really pissed off about her criticisms a few times. However, if you take her class seriously and are open to her comments, she truly is a great teacher.

I'll start off by saying that you should definitely take this wonderful professor. As many of you know, in high school, we are told to write in ONE specific format, but in this class, you have tons of freedom. We wrote 3 essays this quarter, and each one, to me, was a pleasure to write. The topic are relatively open, so they will give you the opportunity to write what you WANT to write about. Her expectations on these essays are very high, but she has the right justification. She will not pat your back when she (and you) knows that your essay is shitty. She won't bullshit you, giving you a pat on the back for turning in crap, and that's one of the reasons why I appreciate and respect her. Keep in mind, though, that the 3 essays are not the only things you do in class. With each respective essay, you will have a series of articles that will be read, and each article will be talked about in class. Sometimes there's a quiz, sometimes there isn't. It just depends on, well, whatever. Also, some time in the quarter, you have to present ONE of the articles to the class, and you'll be graded on a few different categories such as thoroughness as well as class engagement. Lastly, you'll have a final that is really freaking cool. The final (at least for our class) was to make a blog and post our essays on this blog. This is fantastic because it gives us a chance to get our work out there and to make a name for ourselves. Also, one awesome thing about this class is that there's tons of extra credit that can be easily done throughout the quarter, and it'll give you a chance to try something different. For example, one of the extra credits is to do 10 good deeds and write about them. There's also an extra credit where you go to a record store and write about it. I mean, how cool is that? Overall, this class made me appreciate the beauty of writing, and I now know that I picked the right major, thanks to Courtney. (And the people talking shit about Courtney have no idea what they're talking about. Either that, or they had a single bad experience with her and wrote their review based on just that one experience)

I would definitely not recommend Brogno. At first, she comes across as a great teacher, someone you can really relate to, and she's got a very funny attitude. At the end of the class I couldn't stand her. She's rude, when you go to her with a question, she grades unfairly, and is very judgemental. Every essay is a "good start" but even after tons of work to change it she still gives you a B or a C. She's very biased. I read essays of my peers that were not only poorly written, but didn't follow prompts correctly, and she'd give them better grades than someone who correctly followed the prompt. She's also sneaky. She briefly and VERY vaguely, mentioned an assignment worth 100 points ONCE on the first day of class, and never mentioned it again until the last day when it was due. 4 people in my class of 30 or so actually did the assignment and she still failed everyone who didn't. She refused to compromise with anyone, and even had the nerve to smile as she announced to the class that the fault was completely ours and she would not help. Granted, it was in the syllabus, but it was one line, and she directed us to her website on polylearn, where she has many links to all the assignments throughout the course. It was intentionally confusing, and she purposely did it to screw the students over. I'm not writing this because I'm holding a grudge, I still passed with a B. I'm genuinely trying to save you from a horrible experience.

Courtney is a chill teacher but the class is an intense GE. Her English 145 course was made up of three essays, a midterm, a final, three short documentary essays (on videos like the Corporation, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Super Size Me), two essays assignments on a campus speaker and campus event, and daily homework (all of this is worth 100 points). She is very, very open to give outside help. She met with us in her office and outside school hours to revise essays, which is crucial to do well in her class. You will have to revise your essays five or six times to get a good grade. Her class was fun, she made the course topics interesting by relating them to contemporary events, and she is really easy to talk to. I would recommend her as a great instructor, but the course is a rigorous and time consuming writing GE.

Let me begin by saying that this class is a lot of work, by far the most I have had at any class at Poly so far. Nightly reading and writing hw along with several longer essays make this a very time consuming general ed. That being said, if you want to improve your writing skills and have a really good time in the process, this is the class for you. Courtney is really easy to talk to, her classes are never boring and though she is a tough grader, she gives you numerous opportunities to improve your essay grades. She makes creates a comfortable and open classroom environment and is very willing to help any student during office hours or over the weekends. She is readily available via email and will edit your essays throughout your entire writing process. Courtney is definitely one of my favorite teachers here at cal poly. the material she teaches is never boring, and she truly tries to be friends with her students. her class is far from easy - i worked my ass off to finish all the homework and essays in time (there is A LOT)... but i always went to her office hours if i needed help or wanted an essay revised (i think that's why i pulled off an A- instead of a B+.) Her class will help you learn how to write better, no matter how good or bad you are at english. also, the essay topics are always pretty open-ended.. you can can feel free to write them in your own style and not be penalized, as long as you give a logical, supported answer. i hope courtney continues to teach at cal poly, she's awesome!

She's tough, but you will learn so much and I guarantee your writing will improve. This class requires constant essay writing whether it be little 1 page papers, or essays on documnetaries, or essays on events happening on campus, or one of the 3 big papers she assigns, but all the work is worth it. I came into this class not really knowing how to write, but ready for the challenge of learning how. I just payed attention, listened to my peer editors and re-wrote my papers and ended up pulling an A. Her tests are easy, basically as long as you pay attention and take note you will do fine on the tests. Again, this GE is a lot of work, but if you have motivation you will do just fine. Courtney is a lively young professor who is still learning to teach. She explains topics and her expectations well. Although I have yet to see an actual lecture (and i have attended every class). Class normally consists of story time and discussion about your weekend. And then (if we have time) we go over the previous nights reading, unless we get on a tangent and forget to get back on track. As fun as that is, I am paying to learn to write, not find out what so and so did over the weekend. She has not taught many new concepts nor given many ideas on how to improve essays. I would like to actually learn how to formulate an argument and how to make it strong. I feel this topic was not extensively covered. There are nightly reading assignments, a few small writing assignments, and 3 essays to write. The work load is not unreasonable and for the most part not very difficult. BTW as nice as eye candy can be, that is not a reason to take a class.

Courtney is an all around OK professor. I honestly did not learn that much in her class. She likes to think she is really intellectual but in reality, I'm not sure how well of a handle she has on literature or the subject of English. Her grading system seems fairly arbitrary, and she misses the point on a lot of subjects sometimes. That being said, her class is not that challenging so long as you do the given assignments and spend a decent time on your essays (most of your grade is based on them). I would not put her as a first choice if you are taking this class, but then again, I also wouldn't avoid at all costs. Like I said, she is just average.

Courtney was a good professor who required a lot out of us. There is a lot of reading you have. There are three main essays and she isn't afraid to give out D's on them. I was able to pull B's on my first two essays. The cool part is that she lets you revise them so your grade always get boosted. I went from mid-to-low B's on my essays to A's on them. The truth about the class is you have to be a good writer who knows how to write with good content. If you just write BS, she's gonna call you on it. So overall, she was a good professor and a fair grader. Not standout A-rated professor, but still good.

Courtney overall is a decent English professor. There are three essays - the first one is 2 pages (600 word MAX), second and third range from 6 to 10+ pages, depending on how much you write. In class, we sat in a circle and discussed the readings. Some days it was fun, others it seemed like a waste of time, but you get that with any class. She makes you read your thesis aloud for each essay and does not want you to write without using "I" or "you" (words which were banned in my high school English classes). It was hard on my first essay, but I got used to it. If you're like me and had a ban on those words in high school, I might recommend taking another professor. Other than that, her class was good, she was a fun professor, and the workload was NOT AS TERRIBLE as everyone says. They were straight-forward, mindless assignments that you basically receive full credit on as long as you do them, so I wouldn't worry about that. For a GE class that's hard to get, I would take Courntey if her class was still open.

After reading the reviews of Courtney, I was literally terrified. But her class definitely surprised me.. she spends a few minutes at the beginning of class asking people about their day, weekend, etc. She tries to make jokes and keep things entertaining, and she's super young and "with it". HOWEVER, the work load for this class is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. She obviously never reads polyratings or her reviews because I have spent aprox 60% of my time for this class, and I'm taking 4 classes. She does make it effort to help you out, and edit it if you go to office hours. But the fact of the matter is that she grades ridiculously hard, presses her opinions on people (even though she "says she tries to not to"), and can basically make you feel stupid on the spot. HOW THE CLASS WORKS: There were no in class quizzes (even though she said there would be), but there is literally a homework assignment due EVER SINGLE DAY (my class was 4 days a week), 1 midterm (essay+scantron) and 3 essays. Courtney was a very good English teacher who had an interesting syllabus and always tried to keep classes from getting boring. Going through things like satire, political debates, and the elements of critical thinking, she kept the students engaged. I can only imagine that the reason people did not like her class was because it does require some effort. There are homework assignments nearly every night, but they took an average of 20mins to do and were not difficult. Courtney is a pretty awesome professor. This English 145 class was surprisingly my favorite class this quarter. The classes are usually small, so you get to know your classmates which is always fun. She also divides the class into the Harry Potter houses, and you compete for points to get extra credit. There are 3 essays to do for her class that take up most of the work. The first one is very simple and extremely short (600 words or less). However, the second 2 essays can easily run into the 8+ page range which can be really time consuming. There are other assignments and readings, but they are small and really don't take much time. You won't regret taking this class, i really enjoyed it and i learned a lot. She gives feedback on essays through voice memos, which are very helpful. The only thing they lack is suggestions on how to improve for next time. overall, excellent teacher.

I loved Courtney as a person, but as a professor I wish that she would change a few things. The homework and small assignments for the entire quarter are less than 10% of your grade which is ridiculous considering how much effort you put in over the quarter. Go to her office/coffee hours and have her review all your papers before you turn them in! This will save you and guarantee a good grade in this class. I didn't realize this for my first paper and it was a shock to get back a low grade. She does allow you to rewrite your papers which is a god send and if you go to her for help it will bring them up at least one letter grade. She is also a very understanding person. I had some family issues that came up at the time we were writing the final paper so she gave me an extension on it, which also helped me to get a B in her class. The class itself was very lively and interesting and kept me awake at 9am. The 2 tests were 1/2 scantron and 1/2 blue book which meant you were there for a while taking them but if you studied what you covered in class, you were fine. Overall, a really nice person who will give you help if you seek it out, but this is definitely a class that you have to work hard to do well in.

Many of the positive evaluations for Courtney are all true. I took her because of her rating and she has lived up to her expectations. The first day of class she made us vote on who could add from the wait-list because "this is a democracy". Her class is very straightforward. The midterm is exactly what you've read in class. If you go to class it's very manageable to do well. There are only 3 essays the whole quarter and there is ample time to do them. The only advice I would give anyone thinking of taking Courtney is to go to office hours. She helps a lot and it gives you an opportunity to get to know her grading style. She is extremely welcoming and easy to talk to. She holds office hours at Kreuzberg Cafe about 4 times a quarter. She also cancels class at least once within a two week period. The course overall is very well organized and Courtney makes everything very clear to you. She's very nice! She is easy to get along with and a fun person to learn from. She outlines each month through the use of calendars and explains exactly what she wants from you. But despite her thorough explanations, she just doesn't give you good grades. Before handing in my first essay (topic: who are you and what are you doing here?) I had it read and reviewed by peers and English teachers back home. They said I should expect nothing less than a low A or high B. I received a D, and she did not clarify why. Her audio feedback is pretty cool, since you get to hear her directly. But all she said was that she was confused and just didn't get it. I'm not sure how Courtney writes, and I have no idea what she likes to read. But this should not get in the way of her grading system, and after getting positive feedback from others I'm convinced she's not doing this the right way. I worked long and hard hours to give nothing but the best possible essay to her and received a grade that insults me, and I take this VERY personally.

Courtney was an overall really good professor. Her class was very rewarding. Yes, there seemed to be constant essays, however you would have to write just as many essays in any eng 145 class. She was understanding and the style of her class was both unique and entertaining. I would definitely recommend taking her.

Courtney is a caring professor who teaches ENGL 145 really well. There's a heavy workload with lots of reading, but most of it is relevant and interesting. Most importantly, Courtney makes you think, is willing to modify the class for her students, and is very helpful in office hours. Hers is a class worth taking.

WOW YESSSS TAKE BROGNO. No one has ever made me learn about myself more than she did. She's a great teacher and will keep you interested all quarter long. She tells stories and ugh. Just yes. She kinda gets in these moods sometimes where if she's asking a question and people are coming up with the wrong answer, she'll just kind of laugh and give you attitude, but it's ok. Honestly, she's so great. Her class isn't mandatory, she doesn't take roll, but everyone goes anyway! The essays we do are kind of challenging but why are you in college?!?!?! (that's actually one of the essays) To challenge yourlself! yes. If you want some self discovery and don't just want a hum-drum english class Brogno is the way to go hands-down

Courtney, as she prefers to be called, is an awesome teacher! All the articles she has you read for class relate to college students and make you think critically about why you're in college and what you hope to get out of it. She's also exceptionally kind and very personable (she will not hesitate to go off on tangents about her personal life haha). Did I mention she's hot?

Courtney is one professor that truly understands the art of writing. She clearly knows what she is doing. She's very organized, personable, and clear with her expectations. If you want to succeed in her class, you must earn it. Her courses are by no means easy, but they aren't the hardest things in the world either. You will not breeze right through, but you will not suffer if you are ready to learn and succeed. Courtney is very open to her students, and is more than willing to help them succeed. Some tips: 1) Always come to class! You don't have to show up, but this will only impact your grade. 2) Do the readings! You might as well stay home if you show up to class unprepared. 3) Be ready to learn and write. If you put in lots of effort in Courtney's classes, you will learn so much about how to write well. I might argue than Courtney is one of the best English professors at the school. She's young but knowledgeable, and I've never learned so much about writing.

Courtney is AMAZING! I actually looked forward to go to her class everyday. We always got out a little early and she was easy to listen to, so time fly by. Interesting topics we discussed and only 3 essays. Best teacher I've had at Poly so far.

This class was horrible. She spent alot of time talking about her personal life and trying to get us to like her. Her essay assignments are very broad and yes she'll explain them in office hours but she also gives pages of vague assignments; please explain it the first time around. Worst part, she doesn't even grade things on her own. Admitted that she pays someone and doesn't have time to deal with all this shit. Overall, horrible and unfair and I had to work ridiculously hard for a GE. Keep in mind this is a class filled with freshmen too, so they loved her and clung to her every word like she was God. I do not recommend taking her, anyone else would be more fair; or at the very least you'll get someone fair and professional.

I'm not usually one that writes PolyRatings, but I felt compelled to write one for Courtney because of how great of a teacher she is. The articles she had my class read in class were very relavent to college students and many of her essay prompts made me question and reaffirm why I was in school. I've seen some reviews criticize Courtney for sharing about her personal life; personally, I applaud her for opening up and being vulnerable and found that those insights made her more relatable and personable. Plus, it's reasonable she shares that information: she holds writing parties (essentially office hours) at her house because she has to balance being a teacher with being a single mom. I'll end my praise by saying Courtney was easily the best English teacher I've ever had because she made a conscious effort to relate to students and made her assignments open-ended. All that being said, she is a difficult grader-- don't take her class expecting an easy A. Also, several of my female friends have expressed they were intimidated by her, but male students will love her.

Courtney is young, hip, and relatable and it's easy for me to see why people like her so much. As a person, yeah I think she's cool, but not as a professor. She is pretty unprofessional in a lot of ways, which causes me to lose respect and esteem for her. She emphasizes that the whole point of the course is to learn critical thinking and be open to a lot of different ideas, but I felt she was the opposite. It's clear that she's very opinionated and her discussions are not accepting of different points of view. Often times I would say something that was unpopular with the rest of the class or unique to the topic, and she would shut me down. So yeah, I didn't really like her. But the rest of my class seemed to live vicariously through every word she said. Not a great professor.

Overall, a very good experience and one of my favorite instructors to date. Of the three essays, I received A-'s on two and a B+ on the last. The workload is manageable and she's a fair grader who gives valuable feedback.

Courtney, in my opinion, is a great professor. However, it is hard if you have a bunch of other classes you have to worry about. Courtney expects you to put in a lot of effort into your essays, and you want to for the benefit of earning a good grade. I enjoyed this class, because I love writing. I was able to learn a lot about myself through this class through a lot of self reflection. However, I definitely neglected a lot of my other classes the quarter I took this class because of how much effort I was putting in. Your grade is dependent on how much time you spend working on assignments for this class. If I could redo anything, it would be to participate more. She remembers if you participate at the end of the class and will decide to bump your grade or not. Her grading is fair, reading polyratings before I took this class, I expected much harsher grading. She has assigned homework everyday. Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy A.

Courtney is a very good teacher. She explains the material well and you will see yourself evolve as a writer. She offers extra credit and she lets your resubmit your lowest essay for a new grade. She doesn't assign an crazy amount of reading and I like how most the classes are discussion based. I also love her "suggested due date" option, which gives you time to perfect your essays rather than submitting an essay you threw together. I took 19 units the quarter I took her class, and I was easily able to get an A. Best English teacher I've had

She is very good at teaching and promoting critical thinking skills. Seriously never felt so connected to a teacher. She is VERY open about everything and makes learning, speaking aloud, writing, and brainstorming fun. You write three essays that really make you think like never before. Her lack of guidelines freaked me out at first but it gives you a lot of room to explore yourself, which she encourages. I liked this class so much

Pros: Courtney Brogno leaves a good first impression. She's very laid back, young, and encourages critical thinking. She also puts in a lot of effort into grading. She allows you to pick a grading option for your essays that includes a voice memo from her. On the voice memo, she walks you through each part of your essay and why you received the grade. She also welcomed her students into her own home for "writing parties", which she offered help and assistance with essays or just a quiet space to brainstorm. I enjoyed most of the videos she assigned, and although they were pretty lengthy, you can always find something productive to do while you watch them. Cons: She sometimes would assign a one-question quiz, worth 20-40 pts, about a reading she assigned (usually the long ones, so make sure to read those ones!). I thought this was smart on her part, but being that I had read these long articles thoroughly, I thought the questions were ridiculous. I would lose 40 points for one question that was very obscure and might have been clear to someone who read the article 6 times over like her. I also hated how much time was wasted in that class. I showed up on a Friday afternoon once to watch a Southpark episode that vaguely touched on what we were discussing in class. We ended class early most days, but it always felt like a giant waste of time. Homework load was doable, but far too much for a GE. She lets you revise one essay and also has a "suggested due date" for 2/3 of the essays. The suggested due date gives you the option to work longer on your essay if you need more time. No midterm and the final was ridiculously easy.

Courtney Brogno is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. It is EXTREMELY hard not to pass her class because she gives you so many opportunities to revise essays and get help in class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She will see you are putting effort into her class and give you better grades. No required textbooks for this class which was very nice. Very up-to-date with material learned. Just don't slack off, its an interesting class, don't take it for granted. Take this class.

Though Courtney tries to be so hip and cool, she isn't. She wants her students to "evolve" out of the 5 paragraph essay papers, however does not give room for exploration. She does not promote critical thinking

Courtney has been my favorite teacher so far at Cal Poly. She encourages her students to think critically and embrace learning, and I can singlehandedly say that this class has changed the way I view the world. She utilizes a mix of medias including articles, podcasts, and videos, which keep things interesting and grab students attention. She breaks down the traditional barrier between college professors and students, and encourages her students to question her reasoning and beliefs. Her class has led me to regain my appreciation for my learning and truly think about how I am thinking, as well as try to focus more when I am in class. She is flexible and understanding, and always tries to help her students. She says attendance isn't mandatory, and also lets you text her asking any questions you may have. No midterms, a take-home final exam, and only 2 essays. This class rocks!!

To say she is inappropriate is an understatement. She flashed us numerous times while she sat on the desk in class. How she didn't realize this? I don't know. Thinks she is most literate person on the planet. She isn't. She puts in no effort whats so ever. I mean come on lady its a fucking English class. No rubrics were given except for one which was for or final essay, but she downloaded it off some website. 10/10 would not recommend. She's terrible. Too much work for a simple GE.

I have extremely mixed feelings about Courtney. She is the type of professor that wants to teach her class in a life changing way, which I respect and appreciate that she wants to make a difference. However, this is a general education class and a majority of students were overwhelmed with the shear volume of work required for this class. I had extreme anxiety while writing the essays in this class because Courtney has unattainable expectations for non-liberal arts majors. I honestly enjoyed her lectures and the way she encouraged critical thinking. If you have time, I would take her class, but don't expect to get an A.

Courtney is a super chill teacher and she tries to understand you but it's not always the best. She assigns SO much busy work and when you have other hard classes that is not the best thing. However, there are SO many homework assignments so that if you miss one it does not affect you that much. When it comes to essays not a lot of people get higher than a C or B. I did the bare minimum in the class and got a C while this other girl did literally everything got a C as well. Also, if your'e even partly conservative if she finds out she doesn't like you that much because she is super liberal. On a different note if you have a lot going on in your life she understands and will extend deadlines for you. Honestly she gives me a lot of mixed feelings and if you want higher than a C don't take her.

Courtney's class had the most work out of any other class I took last quarter, including major and concentration classes. The class itself isn't bad to come to because its mainly just discussion or quizzes, but the amount of work assigned is overwhelming. I wrote 2 essays, each around 17 pages (including works cited) which took way too much time away from my other classes. You have to have certain parts completed by the deadline, so theres not a lot of room for flexibility when writing them. She also requires specific components of the essay to be included, like summaries of certain articles you might not use or incorporate so writing them is difficult. Daily homework doesn't seem that bad but is graded very hard and is time consuming. Would not recommend.

Courtney's class is a RIDICULOUS amount of work for a GE. Prepare to spend hours doing assignments that you will learn nothing from. Her essays give you the opportunity to redo them, but she slams you so hard that you will lose hope. She has a "Rock My Vote" essay, and she spends so much time shoving her liberal views down your throat. If you're anywhere near moderate or conservative, good luck. In addition, she was very inappropriate, sitting on the desk accidentally flashing us, and telling us at one point that we should "all drink and try pot", and telling us her life story about her failed marriages. Just avoid. Take another professor. She's not worth the headache and walking out of the class every day thinking "What just happened"

Courtney is a really chill professor and sees herself as your peer rather than an authority figure. Most of the classes were heavily discussion based in order to teach us how to think critically which I liked instead of her just lecturing. She gives you A LOT of busy work and most of it is pointless. She is also a pretty tough grader on essays so don't expect an A because that is pretty rare. I liked her teaching style but her grading style sucked. She doesn't input anything on polylearn except for your 2 essays and final so there's no way of knowing your actual grade because of all the daily homework assignments she doesn't put in. Even though she has drawbacks as a professor I would definitely take her again.

Ok, I think people are being too harsh on here. Courtney is one of the chillest professors I've had at Cal Poly. She acts like a peer and really relates to us as students. This also makes her really approachable. As far as workload there was a fair amount, but it's college what do you expect? I did everything she assigned and I got an A. I think her grading is fair just make sure to revise your essays as much as possible. I will caution super right sided people not to take this class, she is definitely very liberal. But overall, I would definitely recommend this class!!

Take Courtney Brogno! She actually wants to help her students and is seriously one of the coolest and entertaining teachers ever. Her work is not hard at all and she gives you such a good amount of time to get things done, just make sure not to procrastinate since her class goes by quick. She's so funny and entertaining and is so interactive with the students. I would recommend her 100% for any class she teaches because she's so passionate about each of her classes and will actually help you when you need it. She explains everything clearly and as long as you put in effort, your grade will reflect that. Two big essays but besides that just a few quizzes from articles we have to read and some summaries of articles (literally not hard at all) and that was it. Seriously a great teacher.

Courtney is one of the best English professors ive ever had. She's super relatable, cares about students, and is funny. She keeps class so entertaining and the work is honestly not hard. If she gives a quiz, she will give you the answers to it during lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend going because its an enjoyable class. She does assign work but its not hard and its an English class so you kinda have to expect that. Super helpful during office hours so definitely take advantage!
