He is a great teacher who is very orginized and helpful. If you are struguling with material he is very helpful in office hours and gives out note packets which keep you engaged but do not overwhelm you. He is the best teacher i have had a Cal Poly. He is fair and a nice guy.

Midterms are not bad, the final was just proportionally harder than the rest of the class and brought my grade from an A- to a B+

Doi was a great teacher. He truly wanted his student to learn the material. He hands out notes for each lecture, and at the beginning of class asks students which ones they've missed, so he doesn't punish you if you don't go to class, but go cause his examples in class will help you on the test. We had two midterms, which aren't that bad as long as you pay attention in class and a cumulative final. Homework was collected every week, which helps your grade and isn't that hard to complete. Take Doi.

Dr. Doi is a great teacher and is willing to help you out no matter what. Just make sure to be in class and if you dont understand make sure to ask him on the spot, he is really good at fixing and recognizing student problems on the spot. Homework is extremly important and I recommend you do it. Dr. Doi would be the best teacher to take for Stats 130 or any other stats class.

This professor is by far the best one I have taken overall at calpoly. His lectures are never boring, they are very straight forward, and easy to follow. Fun class.

Dr. Doi is a great professor. His lectures are never boring, he's always willing to help, and his tests cover exactly what was covered in the lectures. He typed out all the notes for each chapter and gave us practice midterms that helped tremendously for the final. Sometimes his examples for problems are a little awkward, but he's only trying to be cute! So take Doi and see why statistics is applicable in everyday life.

Dr. Doi was always very helpful and made sure that you understood the material clearly. I felt his quizzes and tests to be fair and that he had prepared us well for them.

Jimmy Doi always made class so much fun. I'm really not a stats person at all, but he has a way of making the subject interesting. This class was pretty easy, you just have to stay on top of the homework and study a little bit for the quizes. Don't bother reading the book unless you get really confused. I recommend this class especially for those who don't really like math/stats much. :)

I have never received an A in a math course in my entire life so taking one at Cal Poly was a scary thought but Professor Doi presents the material in such an easy to understand manner that you would have to be an idiot not to get a B or above. His course notes are typed up, fill in the blank, that he copies and passes out to you. He truly wants everyone to do well. A world of advice, show up to class and pay attention to what is on his quizzes (about four of them) because VERY similar questions will show up on the final which was much harder then the rest of his tests.

Dr.Doi was one of the best professors I have had at Cal Poly. I am not a math person and he made the material easy to understand and really broke it down for the class. He distributes packets that go along with the lectures and is always open to questions. If you have any concerns visit him at office hours, he is more than happy to help. He wants his students to do well and you can see how genuine he is in his efforts to help! Take him if you can, he made stats easy to understand and very applicable to all majors.

This guy is so cool! Not only is it apparent that he loves his job, but he also cares about every student as well. He takes the time to get to know every single student, and sends out personalized emails to tell you your progress. The class is taught through a pre-made packet of course notes, and it is a REALLY great way of learning a lot of statistics in ten weeks! His teaching method, his attitude, everything about this class is great. The tests can be tricky but the quizzes are cake. He is always there to help, so go visit his office hours if you need him. Not only will he help you until you get it, but he'll be there to recommend some great sushi places, Hawaiian music, and maybe a game of basketball as well!

Professor Doi is an outstanding teacher who clearly has a complete mastery of the class he's been teaching for a number of years. He is able to successfully guide you through the principles of his class in a very organized manner utilizing surprisingly useful course notes. Taking Stat 130 with Prof Doi was one of the best decisions I've made in recent memory, and I would recommend him to anyone that needs to take any class he teaches.

Yes, I got a C. No, I am not one of those students who comes on here to cuss out their professors because they got a shitty grade in the class. Dr. Doi is a fantastic teacher. He presents the material clearly, will go over it if you do not quite understand it, and will answer any questions you have in class. The only reason I got a C is because I don't think I studied as much as I could have. Perhaps I would have done better having prepared more. FYI his tests are DIFFICULT, so make sure you study well for them! go over the homework problems, do practice problems, study the notes, etc. do everything to make sure you get the best grade in his class. He is a good teacher, but he expects you to put effort into his class.

Doi was great, he tried really hard to help everybody learn the material. He was open to suggestions to change the class but I don't think he needed to change anything becuase he did such a great job. He also presented the material very well and made it easy to understand. Jimmy was a cool professor. He really made sure that everyone was understanding the material at hand and he presented everything in such a way that it was easy to comprehend. Jimmy Doi was the best math teacher I have ever had. He has an amazing ability to present the material clearly and goes well out of his way to help his students succeed to their best ability. He's young, and easy to talk with and relate to. Despite his lack of tenure in his teaching career, he is an incredibly mature professor and it seems like he has been teaching this stuff for years. He's really organized too... expect about two emails a day from him about homework reminders and DO go into office hours if you need help on the homework. Make sure you go to class and do all the work, because he will challenge you. But taking Doi is definitely worth it.

Professor Doi is definately one of the best teachers I've had at Poly. The notes in the class were very clear. If a particular area was confusing, he would make sure everyone understood untill we moved on. He also sent us reminders and updates through email and helped us to form study groups. He also set up review times for exams.

He's pretty leinient with grading the tests, but the grader for the homework is anal. Overall, I loved this stat class and he's been a great teacher.

Dr. Doi is a GREAT instructor. You buy (or print) this packet of material and he just follows it every day for class. Not to say this is a boring class, I found it very entertaining and informative. He relates a boring subject to relevant everyday things that affect us all. Just buy the book and course material and you're golden. The quizzes are not too hard and the tests are exactly the same level of difficulty, just more questions. Overall, an awesome professor.

Dr. Doi is a great professor. If you have to take stats I highly recommend you take his class. Definitely have the class notes the first day of class and start on the homework as soon as it is assigned. The homework ends up counting for a lot so it is important to keep up. There is a new homework assignment every week and you get to drop one... it is definitely not too much. If you do the homework you will do fine on the quizes and exams. The group project is kind of a pain because you have to depend on other people of whom you do not get to choose. If you have any difficulties whatsoever talk to Dr. Doi and he WILL help you out. I wish I had other professors that were as organized and as good at teaching as Dr. Doi is.

Great guy, funny average hieght asian man... he makes stupid but funny stats jokes and talks a lot about NC State. Take him if you want to learn stats from a good teacher. I had him for the 5 week summer sesh and it was fast paced but easy to understand. The course notes are your notes, all you do is fill in the blanks and return to your notes to help you answer the homework problems out of the book. Straight forward, good teacher, take him... he will help you learn stats.

Dr. Doi did a great job teachin stat 217. I took it for the 5 week summer session and i thought he did a great job cramming all that information into 5 weeks. Great teacher, will work with you, fair grader. Great all around teacher , highly reccommended!!

Dr Doi was a great professor. He made statistics something that could be easy to understand and applicable in your own life. He really cares that he is lecturing clearly and he is very helpful in his office hours. He will stay late or come in early to see you. He tries to make the class fun and fresh and is very professional- you always know when your next test or exam is and when your homework is due. You have 1 big group project, a test every other week, and an exam every once in awhile. I would most definitely recommend his class, he is a great guy. Oh and the best part, he gave everyone reese's pieces.

Great professor, concise notes, clear-cut tests!

This is superficial, but it must be said: Jimmy Doi is adorable. As far as his prowess as a professor is concerned--he is an amiable, lucid lecturer, and as obliging and committed to aiding in student success as one could hope. As an English major, I found that his enthusiasm was engaging enough to make the material interesting, and I enjoyed going to his class every day. Plus..he's really cute.

So I am an English major and like many of my Liberal Arts brethren I fear taking math classes quite a lot. Dr. Doi made statistics simple, if you need proof just check my grade. He was an excellent teacher, knew what he was talking about, and was very good at helping out if I was stuck on something. I took his 8 week summer class and it was one of the best classroom experiences I have had to date. His midterm and final were not easy, studying was definitely required; however, none of the questions were worded to trick the reader and they all used the same language that Dr. Doi used every day in class. He is the best teacher I have had yet.

Dr. Doi is absolutely amazing. He cares for his students so much and is so selfless. I HIGHLY recommend him for stats. He is so incredibly clear at explaining things. Also, he tries to get to know everyone of his students and sends personal emails. The world needs more professors like him.

I enjoyed the overall experience of Professor Doi's class until the final and subsequent grading of the course. He really is a knowledgeable professor and one of the better math teachers I've had, however, I averaged a 95% on the courses two tests and the only thing that consistently brought me down was homework (in which only 4 of the problems will be graded, no matter how many there are). After finishing the final I was shocked and angry as much of the material had not been taught to us, and we were expected to apply concepts he stated would not be on the tests. The average was a 74.8% and I got a 75% and ended up with an 89.47% final grade, a B+. The only reason I am irritated at the grade is the fact I ranked third in the class, meaning only 2 people out of 39 received A's. I also received an email stating my final grade was below the average and therefore my final grade was lowered, even though it wasn't. I did thoroughly enjoy the class and thought Doi was a great teacher while I was in it, but in retrospect it wasn't worth it to put in so much effort to be screwed out of the grade I worked very hard for.

Prof. Doi was my favorite professor my first quarter at Poly. His class notes are amazing and so easy to study from because he explains everything and has examples. He is perfectly willing to answer people's questions and 80% of the time the answer was on the next page of notes and he would just say, "Well, that's a perfect transition, actually", because he just planned out the notes so well. He grades promptly (about 1 week) and the homework wasn't too hard or cumbersome and was graded fairly. Loved his class!

Prof. Doi honestly cares about his students. I hate math. I am a Coms major and a senior, I have been putting off this class for as long as possible. I wish I could say that I got a C because the teacher was horrible but that is the exact opposite. Stats is just plain hard. Dr. Doi really goes out of his way to help. There are two midterms and a final. if you do bad on the first and he sees you are trying he curves your grade up. Take Dr. Doi! best teacher I could have had

Professor Doi is a pretty cool guy. He definitely cares about his students and will help you. My only complaint of his class is that he would explain things well, but sometimes it was difficult to understand what the result of your equation actually meant. That made memorizing things somewhat difficult, but most of the information can be found online if you are struggling. If you're completely new to stats, he makes the class doable. I would recommend.

Jimmy is AWESOME. He is a really great instructor, probably my favorite! He presents the material so clearly and it's never boring. He has you buy these course notes that you follow along and fill in during lecture. It makes it really easy to understand! His tests are a little difficult, but if you practice and go to office hours you'll do fine! The extra points from homework help. He is really a nice guy! Take him if you get the chance! :)

He is a good teacher who sees the potential in all his students. His lectures can be a little boring but if you do the practice problems in class and review the notes you will be fine. His tests are straight from the notes so you just have to study those. Overall, not a bad class. Oh! go to office hours, they are very helpful.

Dr. Doi is a very knowledgeable, professional, likable guy. His lectures were very clearly structured and he made sure to answer any and all questions brought up. Tests and quizzes came straight from the homework and lecture notes, making for a rather easy class. Make sure you do the homeworks, not only are they helpful for understanding the material, they are also a large part of the grade. Overall, I liked Dr. Doi very much. I hardly studied and still got an A- which I attribute partially to his efficiency and skill in teaching.

Doi is THE most amazing stats professor. I took AP stats in high school and absolutely hated it. I was dreading coming to college and having to take it again but instead I found an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate professor who truly had the best interest of his students at heart. He provides a set of his very own course notes, so you're not simply reading from a statistics book, and stops frequently to clarify points. If you must take statistics, I would strongly recommend Jimmy Doi.

Doi is one of if not THE greatest professor on campus. If you have a chance to take his class, take it. I'm not a math person. Never have, never been. But he is so organized about how he teaches and he gives you a complete outline of notes so you can easily follow along to his lectures which makes it so much easier to understand. He gives an example for everything too, so if you forget how to do something it's right there in the notes. And he genuinely cares about the success of his students which I think made him stand out even more, on top of already being an awesome teacher. Use his office hours especially before tests. He really helps and basically shows you how to use the formula sheet as a cheat sheet. If you don't love math but want to... This is the class to take! But warning... Your bell-shaped curve will never ever be as nice as his. It's flawless every time.

One of the best professors I have ever had. I am a coms major but I actually really enjoyed math because of him, and looked forward to class every day. He is extremely organized and makes math make sense, while showing a genuine care and effort towards his students. Take this course if you can! It was both interesting and enjoyable, with one of the best professors I have ever had.

Professor Doi is the best professor I've had so far at Cal Poly. Granted, I haven't had that many since it was only my second quarter here... but even still. The most helpful part about this class was his course notes. You can purchase a set of preprinted notes where you just fill in blanks during the lectures. I'm a liberal arts major, so math isn't my strongest area of expertise, but Professor Doi made it very straight forward and easy to follow. Not to mention he's just a super nice guy who you can tell really cares about how well you do. He even made the textbook available in the library so you don't have to buy one yourself which was very nice. The homework assignments were pretty easy. You have a few quizzes, 2 exams (which are like the midterms), and a final. He says at the beginning of the course that it is difficult to get an A in the class (which it is), but I still think the course was very manageable. For studying for the tests, I would suggest rereading your course notes while doing the examples and then redoing homework questions. This really helped me throughout the quarter. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Doi! He's awesome.

As a required course, I wasn't expecting to enjoy Stats too much. But considering it was at 9am everyday, it was manageable. Professor Doi does a good job relating material to real life examples, which helps clarify concepts. Tips: figure out how to use minitab, and take good notes because a lot of test material comes almost directly from them. Also, the hour goes by quicker if you keep track of how many times he says "do you buy that?" I think the most in one hour was 10.

Stats is a boring subject to most people, but Dr. Doi really knows how to teach. He gives us course notes that he made himself and goes through them with us throughout the quarter to learn. He presents the material very clearly and answers all the students' questions fully. He covers all the material in his exams. I passed with a B+ because of careless mistakes, but I had a lot of fun in that class. Dr. Doi is a great professor!!

Professor Doi is a great teacher. My only complaint, literally, is that he uses his own proprietary course notes, which you need to buy and print out if you want to be able to take notes on the guide itself, otherwise you'll have it on your laptop while taking notes on a separate sheet, which is what I did. Otherwise he's fantastic, very kind, open to questions, and clearly knows a huge amount about statistics. He rewards effort and good behavior in class. Homework was quite easy and tests were fairly easy as well. Pay attention in class and know how to do the basic tests and analyses he teaches and you should be pretty much guaranteed an A or B.

WHY ARE YOU MAKING THE TESTS SO TRICKY !!! Seriously though, I went to office hours regularly and still somehow failed a test. Doesn't make sense to me either bud. Class was very entertaining and easy to follow though.

Dr. Doi is a good professor and I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who has to take stats. He knows his stuff and cares about his students. His office hours were very helpful. There was one homework assignment per week, and also 3 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final throughout the quarter. The quizzes are short and pretty easy (took less than 10 minutes to complete), and the tests are a mix of multiple choice and free response. This class isn't easy, you'll have to put in a lot of hard work, but it isn't impossible to do well and understand the material. I highly recommend signing up for a study group, and also if you can, take STAT 130 before taking STAT 217 if you have the chance. Sometimes lectures could get kinda boring, but that's probably just because Dr. Doi is very straightforward and to the point in his presentation of the material. The concepts can get a little confusing towards the end, so don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it, he really does want to help his students learn and do the best they can.

This guy was the best professor I have had at Cal Poly yet. He turns a pretty boring subject into something interesting and makes class worth-while each and every day. He is fair, organized, and overall an incredibly good teacher. TAKE HIM!!!!

Doi is a great professor and i definately reccommend him. If you go to his office hours you can basically go over every homework question and he will sit there with you until you understand it. The class consisted of weekely homeworks, 4 quizzes and 2 midterms and a final all of which were pretty easy; straight from the lecture and homeworks. If you have to take 218 take Doi, he is amazing.

Dr. Doi is a baller. Not only in the sense that he is the best teacher EVER, but he also tears it up on the b-ball court in the rec center. He is by far the best STAT teacher and I'm a STAT major. He is the nicest guy and he doesn't come off as some nerdy teacher but more as some cool guy who is good at math. Anyone who didn't like Dr. Doi is either awful at Statistics or is thinking of some other professor

Professor Doi is one of the most brilliant teachers I have ever had! I failed this course once with Schaffner and retook the class with Doi. His lecture material is wonderful because you buy a course pack with all of the wording for you, all you have to do is fill in some of the blanks. The best thing about Doi is that he is willing to help you get through the class. Even though there was only one test, it was the easiest test to read and comprehend compared to Schaffner. There are no random questions and he has sample tests online for you to look over before the test.

Statistics is simple but it\'s extremely easy to get confused because there are a lot of rules and formulas. He makes everything as simple as possible and is a great teacher. He makes class enjoyable by having a sense of humor and just being a nice guy. There to help you so take advantage of it! Office hours are extremely helpful! You want him as a teacher, hands down.

I took his class when I was a freshman and now I am a senior at Cal Poly. In my mind as one of the best professors I've ever had!

If you have the chance, take Professor Doi. His course notes are organized, his quizzes are easy if you've done the homework, lectures are very clear and would go back to explain anything confusing, midterms are fair as long as you studied for it.

I love how clear and organized his notes are. He is a great professor that is great at teaching. Going to class every day is important though, but if you go to class and do your homework the tests and quizzes aren't bad at all. Yes I got a C, but that is because I struggled on some of the Homeworks and one exam.

Doi is an awesome professor. You can tell he's very knowledgable on the subject, but at the same time stays at the students' pace and doesn't make things too difficult. His lectures are easy to pay attention to and the way his class is graded is very straightforward. The only thing was, this quarter (fall 15) he made the first exam way too easy (i got a 96 without studying), then tried to adjust but made the second exam way too hard and the final maybe a little too hard, but still manageable. Ultimately he curved the exams so our grades turned out fine, but it still messed me up for the rest of the quarter. regardless, Doi is an amazing stats professor and im glad I got him for 218.

Amazing teacher, you definitely have to show up to class to understand the material. But if you work hard, do your homework, and ask for help when needed, you can easily pull off an A. Overall, fantastic teacher, I'd recommend him for sure!

Professor Doi was a great teacher. He lectures off of his own lecture notes and if you understand his notes you will get an A on the exams. There are two midterms, three quizzes and a final. There are homework assignments due every week that take at most two hours. It is extremely easy to pass this class while doing very little work, but if you want an A you will have to put some time in. I would definitely recommend taking this class!

Jimmy Doi is very organized and very good at presenting the course materials. He is more than stoked to answer students' questions and always makes sure his students understand and know how to apply what we learn. Homework is graded on accuracy, but its not too bad because he only chooses certain problems, not the entire thing, to grade. His tests are very reasonable and always cover material from the homework and examples from class. He has a set of course notes that you fill in in class which are extremely helpful. I highly recommend Jimmy Doi as a statistics professor.

Dr. Doi is a badass! He explains everything VERY CLEARLY and uses interesting examples that make it easier to remember the concepts. Don't expect Dr. Doi to hold your hand through every question in office hours; he can tell if you have actually tried the problem or are just asking because you're lazy. Definitely take him! Especially if you are a bio major!

Doi was a wonderful professor! His notes are informative, he is very eager to help students, and he is engaging. I really enjoyed his teaching style. I got a B+ in the class, and I didn't put a huge amount of effort into studying outside of class, that being said I did take statistics in high school. I know a lot of people in my class who failed or got C's, but if you show up, pay attention, study, do the homeworks, you can get a B easssyyyyyy. Take this professor!

One of the best teachers i've had at cal poly. Class is paced towards whatever students want, slower or faster just tell him and he'll fix it. Homework is sparse but given weekly. Tests aren't too bad if u stay up to speed with the lecture. Lecture notes are given so u don't have to go to class which is highly not recommended as he explains everything very well and tells you what will be needed on tests. Grade is based on 2 Midterms, homework and a final. Take doi.

If every professor at Cal Poly could be like Doi, Cal Poly would be one of the best schools in the country (if it isnt already). If everybody was like Doi, the world would be a better place. Unfortunately, that is not possible. But you can make your world a better place be taking Doi for anything and everything you can.

Excellent Teacher - dedicated to improving his techniques; awesome at office hours & explaining things in class. Keep up with homework - and understand how it works. He'll let you know what you're responsible for on tests & tests were a fair representation of material. Best advice - go to class & pay attention -- it's all there and in the homework. I DEFINITELY will be recommending Dr. Doi to others & would highly suggest taking his class if you have the chance. I put off this class for a long time, because it's offered every quarter - & finally decided to take it over the summer (as a 5-week, which is hard, but it's over before you have a chance to forget too much!) - but I took it because of his ratings and am glad I did.

Great teacher, he doesn't make the class easy, but its great if you have major courses that build on this class. He really challenges you to know your stuff and it is damn near impossible to get an A in this class, but it is also hard to fail. He aims to get a true C average and doesn't just hand out A's and B's like some teachers. If you're looking for an easy class, don't take Doi, but if you want to know the material, he's your guy.

Doi is VERY knowledgeable about statistics. His course is laid out very well and his lectures are as well, but they can be difficult to follow at times. The lecture notes he has you buy are very good and easy to study when the time comes. The tests however do not fairly cover the lecture material. There were oftentimes questions stemming from obscure topics in his lecture notes, so make sure you study everything, even the small details. Doi is very particular, so prepare for a strict schedule with little to no deviation from his syllabus.

such a good professor! He is so passionate about presenting his material; he could probably recite every word of his course notes. such a cutie.

Taking Doi? Look forward to hearing these quotes over and over and over: "I'll wait until you say something.", "This is easy.", "If you're not totally asleep you should be able to answer the next question.", "Don't think too hard.", "If you're on your toes you should know the answer to this.", "This shouldn't take you that long.", and my favorite "Buy a shirt." Doi comes across as understanding the material and keeps up a quick pace throughout the entire course. He will slow down if you ask, but if you don't he will keep on rolling full speed. He spends adequate time on topics, but he talks so damn fast if you space out for even a second you are lost on the example. He has you buy course notes from University Readers that are pretty complete. Well, I have his final in less than two hours. I am not looking forward to this. Everyone says stats 312 is easy, but even Doi admits his class is the hardest stats 312 class there is.

Dr. Doi is the BEST stats teacher by far. He knows the material and is amazing at explaining. Take his class if you get the chance, he makes stats actually interesting.

He has you buy some 150+ pages of course notes that are really helpful when you are studying. He has weekly hw which are basically take home quizzes since he picks out 4 even problems and grade you on how accurate your answers are. The 3 quizzes are easy but the 2 midterms plus final are hard. Even though he gives you all the equations you will need, the test is still hard. I recommend taking this professor but getting an A will not be a walk in the park and he knows that.

Doi was awesome! He is very professional in class and super helpfull in office hours. His grading seems fair even though as he says at the start of the quarter: it is a hard class. I'm a biomedical engineer and took this class as one of my electives. Although STATs gets a bad rap, the class was actually very usefull. Doi's class notes packet is outstanding by the way. And, if you're trying to choose between Heather Smith and Doi, pick Doi! A friend of mine took Smith and seriously regretted it.

Jimmy Doi has a good personality and is nice to his students. His lectures are straight forward and easy to follow. However, his tests could use improvement. If you like memorizing useless theoretical facts about statistics (that you will have no use for outside this class) embedded in 200 pages of course notes, then this professor is perfect for you. If you don’t like memorizing useless information, be prepared to lose at least 20% of your final course grade.

You can tell that Professor Doi puts in many many hours to make his lectures smooth, informative, and interesting. I really enjoyed his class even though I underestimated the difficulty of both of his midterms and his final. Even though I received a C, I have a pretty good grasp of the material. He's very approachable and helpful during office hours and maybe I'll even learn golf just to go golfing with him. Wait... golfing? Naaahhhhh!!

he gives us a really helpful note packet that guides us through his lectures. he is very clear and makes the material understandable. but I would not suggest taking the class in the summer, because the last week is full of all this crap to remember and the final is the last day of the week so its really hard to re-learn everything and remember the week's lecture at the same time. as for doi, he is a good teacher, and I would recommend him for a regular quarter class.

Jimmy Doi is a really great professor. He presents that material clearly and effectively and manages to make statistics really interesting by relating what you are learning to how it\'s used in the real world. He is also very approachable and extremely helpful during office hours. His midterms and final are not difficult if you go over the course notes, quizzes, and previous exams and study properly. Overall, Doi is one of the best professors i have had at Poly and i would definitely recommend him.

Jimmy Doi is by far one of the best teachers I have had anywhere. He is incredibly professional, highly organized, and excellent at answering students\' questions. Doi is very clear on what he expects of you in his class and warns you right away that you\'ll have to work for an A. One thing in particular I appreciated was that he has a chapter focused on analyzing the capability of manufacturing processes. This may seem like an odd topic to devote an entire chapter too, but around 1/3 of engineering jobs out there are in manufacturing. The one thing to be careful of is that he asks rather difficult conceptual questions on his quizzes and exams. They are very specific, so you\'ll need to know the material well.

Very straightforward. The entire class is laid out for you, and he goes over everything very clearly. Everything is easy to understand, and he gives great examples to go along with the topics. Outstanding teacher, I highly recommend taking him.

Doi is probably the best professor I have had so far at Cal Poly, although I got a C+ in the class, he graded as fairly as he could, and put partial credit points where they were appropriate, and I definitely could have gotten a B if I had studied a little more for this class than my other ones. His professionalism was great, notes were clear and precise, and Stats isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but he tries his best to make it interesting. Very helpful in office hours, and encouraging if you flat out fail the first mid-term (like me). Look over all his of hw, quiz, test solutions, and his notes, and make sure you know the material REALLY well. True and false concept questions were always the ones that kills my exam grades, but other problems are mostly in the format of homework questions. Take him, crash his course if you have to.

Best professor I have had at Cal Poly by far. All material is presented in an EXTREMELY clear manner. The ~200 pages of course notes that are required for the class were insanely helpful. Grading was very fair. He doesn't grade the homework, but the person who does is very inconsistent and sometimes extremely harsh. Dr. Doi is aware of this though and gives points back if you bring it to his attention. I found the course extremely applicable to engineering. It is obvious that Dr. Doi is catering the class towards engineers. The examples in the course notes are great. If you go to class, and follow along in the course notes, very minimal work is required to get a good grade. On the flip side, if you miss class, it is very hard to learn the material on your own. I found the true false questions the hardest on the tests and quizzes. I found the final significantly harder than the two midterms, but perhaps I just didn't prepare adequately. If I had to take another stats class, I would definitely want to take it with Dr. Doi. I found the course very interesting.

Jimmy Doi was awesome! He lectured straight through the course notes which were very helpful. I don't know how you would take this class without them. He explained every concept very clearly and if someone had a question he would take the time to make sure everyone understood it before he moved on. We had 2 midterms, about 8 quizzes and a final, all of which were pretty fair. There was a homework due once a week and you could return it to him if you thought the grading was unfair. The class starts out pretty easy but towards the end there is A LOT to remember, but as long as you keep up with the homework and go to class you will be fine. He posts everything on blackboard and is extremely organized. One of the best teachers i have had!

One of the best professors I've ever had. Defineintly far from an easy A which he even tells you in the beginning of the class, but no to hard to get a B. He is such a good professor it is almost creepy, this guy is just so composed and so good at what he does. Plus he cares a lot about his students and their attitude toward the class. I had an A going into the final but didn't study as much as i should have

Professor Doi is one of my favorite professors at Poly. His class is very organized and he explains the material really well. He is also extremely helpful in office hours. He is a fair grader and his class is not that hard as long as you show up to class and do the homework.

Lectures are very organized and clear; I did not feel confused on any concept once a lecture was over which shows how well he presents the subject matter. The material follows his lecture notes which I have found useful in other classes and as a reference for my analysis-intensive courses. He definitely states in the beginning that only a few can get an A, which requires attention to the subtleties of the material. He sends emails throughout the quarter to track how you are performing which I thought was pretty swag. Exams and quizzes are fair. The number crunching portions are no harder than the examples in the lecture notes and the homework. (I remember how the exams pulled a question from the HW, only difference being the given values). What killed me, along with a lot of people were the true and false questions - pay attention to not only the calculation mechanics but also the rules/exceptions/names etc. In my opinion, he is on the same level as the legendary math teacher JIM MUELLER. Getting an A takes some effort to make sure your calculations are ON POINT while you have the concepts down pat at the same time, but honestly, don't let the letter control you, all that matters is that you had this guy teach a very useful class.

Dr. Doi was an excellent professor! I would highly recommend him for STATS. The only reason I passed with a C was because I didn't do some of the homework assignments and I bombed my first midterm. He is a sweet man but he is definitely a tough grader. Homework was worth 15%, quizzes 10%, exam 1 22.5%, exam 2 22.5%, and final 30%. The final was a "common final", which only included his other sections and, of course, was cumulative.

I was excited to take Doi after seeing he had some great poly ratings, but I thought he was the most average professor. He is not terrible. His lectures are not particularly interesting, but he can speak intelligently about the material. He does a lot of example problems on the board which is helpful. He makes you buy course notes which make taking notes way easier because he just has them up on the screen and tells you what to fill in where, but they also make it easier to not pay attention. The tests are not easy but not unnecessarily challenging. A lot of the grading was done incorrectly and the homework assignments were graded really harsh. The text book for this class is also the worst textbook I have ever used (read some of the amazon reviews they're very accurate - Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists, Doi, Farnum, Devore). There are an absurd number of typos both in the questions and the answers. The questions provide way too much context and the layout only makes the book harder and more confusing to navigate. Often reading it just made me more confused.

Doi is a great teacher. He handed out lecture notes every class that we would follow along in lecture and fill in. He constantly e-mailed the class to keep them up to date. He was having small graded Q & A sessions at the beginning of the class but dropped that after the class voted. We had two tests and a final. The tests were challenging and a little harder that what you would expect from the homework. The homework was collected every week but not that hard to complete. He is very helpful in office hours. He is well spoken. He always did his best to determine what the students difficulties are so that he could try to fix the matter.

Professor Doi is probably the best math Professor I have taken at Cal Poly in terms of clearly presenting material (the course notes are very easy to follow and he thoroughly explains the more technical sections), answering questions, and giving fair assignments/tests. My only gripe was that he always has a proof question on each test but that only bothered me because I suck at proofs.

First you have to buy his $50 lecture notes. 200 unbounded pages for $50. But his notes do help, because the book is terrible. He makes sure the homework grader is extremely anal. He makes sure he grades the tests completely anal. And he will try and make sure every single student in the class is a stat major by the time you leave. If not a stat major, at least a stat minor... because we all have so much potential and "statistical disciplines are the way of the future". Stat is no fun no matter who teaches it, and it won't be fun with Jimmy Doi. There are worse teachers and there are better.

I think he is really hot. Take him because he's hot. Rawr!

Professor Doi is one of the better instructors I have had. If you follow along with his course notes and put in the effort for the homework, you should do fine. Professor Doi also will do curving on individual exams and on the final class grade as necessary, but not to inflate the grades.

I do agree with the post about jimmy being hot. Seriously... he is. But onto his teaching. He really is good at conveying things, but he assumes a lot out of his students. The text is terrible but his coursenotes are pretty good. From the homework and coursenotes some of the midterm questions seem to come out of the blue. Some you will know, and some you will have never seen before in your life no matter how hard you study or how many times you do the hw. That being said the two midterms are not your whole grade. 22.5% for each midterm, 10% quizzes (not too hard), 15% homework (stay on top of it, grading is usually not forgiving on it), 30% final. He really likes a low C average. Expect a 70-73% midterm score to be the mean (no curve). Expect only a couple A's in the whole class. Expect to work hard. Overall I liked jimmy a lot. Really an awesome teacher. Challenging exams, and be sure you can prove those things in the coursenotes. "make sure you can prove these results on your own." If not they will come back to haunt you. Honestly i'm surprised his polyrating is this high. He's good but not the best or anything.

Dr Doi was a great teacher. He was always there to help you if you were having trouble understanding any concept. He strives to connect with individual students. In the first few weeks he tries to know the name of everyone in class. His class is tough, but he is a great instructor. Homework is an average load. Test are quite hard. The final was extremely hard. During the class you work off his note packet which contains good information and examples. One thing that he doesn't have is a review guide for tests; that would have been really handy. Other than that great class. As a friend said "not many people get A's, but very few get D's,F's".

Professor Doi is excellent on presenting the material. However, I do have to criticize on his extremely difficult test. He makes it so tricky that you are guaranteed to miss at least a point somewhere on the exam. He also believes in the normal distribution (basically curving the class) so only a few people deserves an "A" in the class. Just keep in mind that his tests are extremely tricky and you need to read it CAREFULLY.

He's a good guy and a decent prof, but his lecture style and personality would better fit a high school teaching position.

Professor Doi was one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. He presents his material very clearly with his own set of course notes, which he slaves over during his free time. He cares about his students, and treats them with respect. I would definitely recommend taking him for any of the classes he teaches.

Professor Doi would come to class with these amazing packets of like fill in the blank notes that had all the relevant information for tests and homework event though you had to hunt through them. He did a really awesome job presenting all the material clearly. The test are manageable. It was his first time teaching the class it can only get smoother. If you have the opportunity to take 324 with him I would for sure do it, I was nervous going into it but I'm really glad I did.

The best of the Stat department, and the best of Cal Poly. Jimmy Doi is an asset to Cal Poly. I have never had a professor with the absolute perfect balance of compassion, integrity, and intelligence. Wonderful teacher! Whatever they are paying this guy, he should demand double!

Dr. Doi is probably one of the top 2 profs in the stat department. He knows SAS like the back of his hand. The midterms and final were open book open note. Of course they weren't trivial, but if you study hard, read the book, and know where everything is in your coursenotes you have no need to worry. He was VERY fair with partial credit. Even if your program didn't run he'd still give you most of the points if you just made a few syntax errors. His ability to stay enthused throughout the quarter is astounding. Hes very straightforward and may not seem like it at first, but a very funny guy as well! He's always willing to help in the office but he won't just give you answers, he usually wants you to think and he'll guide you in the right direction. I wish doi taught more classes, you learn so much. Basically one hw a week, 2 midterms and a final, with quizzes about every 2 weeks. take doi for SAS!! or anything for that matter!!!

Professor Doi is one of the best professor I have in the last two year! He cares about students and the concepts. SAS is a difficult software but very useful for business. BE SURE that you have an experience of programming otherwise this class will be HARD. P.S: To the girl who goes quack quack, STFU! I can hear your voice within 10 feet. daum!

Pros: Doi really knows his stuff and does a great job presenting it to students. The homeworks are long, but really help reinforce the stuff we learn in class. The tests are pretty challenging, but we can use open notes, open book on each test, which makes it not quite as tough. This is a class where if you put in the work, you will really leave understanding the material Cons: Really nothing negative, except that there is a time constraint with each exam that adds another level of difficulty, but if you manage your time well and review, this shouldnt be a problem

If you have never coded before, this class is tough. He tries to teach at a level that isn't too slow for the experienced coders and not too fast for the inexperienced coders. But, for me, it was way too fast. He lectures for all 2 hours, it is really boring, you almost never get to try stuff out on your own. The HWs were very long and 1 problem was always very hard. The tests are extremely challenging and were hard to get done in the 2 hours, despite them being open everything! This course doesn't have any coding classes as pre-reqs, but it should, because it was taught as if everyone knew how to code.

Amazing professor, great class. Lots of work, not an easy class at all. Challenging is what I would call it. He cares A TON, is incredibly willing to work with you to understand the material, and is very dedicated. Take him for any class you can!

The only legitimate complaint we have ever heard was from a girl who said she didn't like him because he made her feel uncomfortable. When he speaks in class "it's as though he's making love to you." Best quote ever.

I am a stat minor. STAT 418 is literally the hardest course I have taken at CP. I am an A student, 3.8 gpa, and I scrapped by with a B-. The class is centered around your knowledge of mathematics, mainly advanced algebra. I understood every topic but the proofs are what killed me. Every test, let me repeat, EVERY TEST, there is 1 proof from the notes. And its not a rearranged book formula or one from the notes; It is brand new. My advice: If you are analytically minded and enjoy problem solving, take STAT 418. I enrolled in this course because it is the continuation of STAT 324 which I enjoyed. THIS IS NOTHING LIKE STAT 324. Categorical Data is complex. I love stats but this is essentially statistics with mathematics. Even if you have A's in all your stat courses, it does you no good here. THIS IS A MATH CLASS so if you suck at algebra, you will hate this class.

Business majors: A degree for the intellectually impaired, HA HA.

Statistics is by no means the most interesting subject, especially if you are an engineer. But Doi actually made the class easy to understand. Like everyone else has said, the lecture notes are very straight forward and his tests are fair. He always tries to use relevent engineering examples to try and relate the topic to the students so that they get a better grasp. Doi is very helpful in office hours and responds to email questions very fast. I would highly recommend Doi to anyone who takes a Stat class. I have had a lot of teachers at Cal Poly, and he is seriously one of the best. Do the right thing!
