She is perhaps the most understanding and compassionate professors I have ever encountered. DePass really does make an effort to know every student, but that wasn't hard in a class of 10 people! She is really into Montessori studies, even though the class is about Childhood Development. The class requires a book and several field trips all pertaining to Montessori Schools. The lectures were actually boring because it was the same information in the book, but she works hard to encourage students to participate in class. Class discussions were really fun because all the students were into the subject. As said before, DePass is incredibly understanding. If you ever have a problem, with the class or with life, she will definitely listen and take it in consideration when grading. I really enjoyed getting to know her and I love the subject, I just wish the class itself was more exciting.

If I could have given her a higher grade, I would have. Vera is the most compassionate professor I have encountered in my 5+ years of college. Her main focus is relationships, specifically with us. She knows that life is not just about how much material can be crammed down our throats in a as little time possible. She understands that life happens, and Cal Poly is not the extent of ours. Vera once told me "Life is not an emergency, take it one step at a time." WOW! It really put me at ease. She worked hard to learn all of our names, which is unusual in an institution that treats you as a faceless number. She presented the material in class through few lectures, but more class discussions and projects. There were usually weekly homework assignments, but they were fun and more thought-provoking than difficult. I could really see that her desire for the course was to see us succeed and leave the class more informed, not just process us through like cattle. At first, I was disappointed because I thought her lectures would be boring and dry. But her zeal and passion for the topic, as well as her vast experience, brought the material to a higher level. Her exam was short answer, but don't let that fool you. I had hand cramps by the time it was over, but I can say honestly that I learned the material. There were a few papers, and a group project. She is VERY fair in her grading, and doesn't just hand out A's. She'll make you work for it. I wish she taught more CD classes, and if you EVER have an opportunity to take a class from her, DO IT! Keep an open mind the first two weeks, it gets MUCH better.
