This guy is the worst teacher here! He really needs to retire. All you do in lecture is sit there and wonder what in world he is talking about and how on earth it related to mircobiology. Everyonce and a while he would say something that was worth writing down. He gives out handout and most of the test questions come from these so don't loose them! If you can get some of his old tests and study from them. He has a test bank and uses them over and over again. I don't think he's updated the test material since he started teachin the class, so some of the infomation is out of data but thats what your going to need to know. As long as you have the old tests to study from this class is a breeze. Oh and I'm sorry for thoes of you who get him for lab too. THats a death sentence.

Absolutely the WORST teacher I have ever had. He lectures for the first 2 hours of lab, and on completely pointless crap. He lectures on stuff the lecture professor doesn't even care about, mostly different bacteria and what they illnesses they cause. This is a general microbiology class, if we want more detail we'll take the classes that cover them. He admits to lecturing that long because this is "important information we need to know and the lecture instructors don't bother to cover it." well than it's not important to the f-ing class. If that's not bad enough, he acts like he is all knowing in all fields, including california law, and more often than not he gives obviously wrong information. And finally, the man can't even spell the simplest words, or pronounce common words correctly. Yes the way he talks or spells is unimportant to the class, but damn if it isn't annoying. So in short don't take the Professor unless it is your absolute LAST option, or if you want to sit though 4 lectures a week.

He seems knowledgable in the subject he just doesn't present it very well. He talks for hours about the most random things that are very hard to understand and then that isn't even on the test. His test are very random and difficult. He is helpful if you ask him questions one on one. He didn't follow his syabllis at all which was difficult because you didn't know what to be reading or when the test were.

This teacher is not a good lecturer. He is very random and hard to follow. You never know what to write down. Whatever he talks about in class is only a small portion of his tests, he makes you read numerous chapters of the book and doesn't lecture on any of it. Then on the tests you are expected to know all that you read. He doesn't follow his syllabus whatsoever. On a good note he is a way better lab instructor. He may talk a long time, but he explains it very well. The lab tests are basic and not too bad if you study well.

Colome is interesting. Sometimes I wondered if he really knew what he was talking about, or if he was just making stuff up. Actually, I think he really knows a lot about the subject but has a hard time conveying the big picture before going into the details. In that sense, it was sometimes hard to understand the relationship between concepts. He's a bit unorganized. The lab portion of the class I found to be fun. The concepts are not very difficult to understand, and he was very lenient on grading the lab exams. If you approach him afterwards, he will generally give you extra points (he has someone else grade the exam). The lecture tests are sometimes random because he will pull really obscure info from a chapter. The final was really hard, and unlike all the other tests he gave. I got As and high Bs on everything, and a C on the final. I think he needs to reevaluate his teaching style.

Colome is an incredibly funny man. I spent half of the time quite enterainted by his side comments to the class and he presents the material in an okay manner. He keeps the class updated with information ...... HOWEVER, his lectures are in one direction, the book is in the other direction and his tests don't reflect either!!!! My suggestion is to not read the material (because he doesn't test on it) but listen to his lecture (although he rarely tests on his lectures). In order to get an A or a B you must get his old tests and study from those. This guy is so random with his information he forgets what he says in class and just takes the information from the old tests. KNOW EVERYTHING FROM THE TESTS!!!!!!! Know every aspect of the questions because that is where he formulates his questions. Here is an example of what he does on his tests...... In microbiology 224 we learned (for twenty minutes...no joke) about AIDS. So I didn't study that much on it. When we got the six page final, two pages were all about AIDS. Anyways, good luck taking him, but avoid him if you can!!!!

Dr Colome is the worst professor I have had in my three years at Cal Poly. His tests are extremly difficult. I am a good student and get good grades. He tests on items that he will randomly sputter out when somthing else is the main topic. When taking his class write down everything. He shows up late to his office hrs, and is always late to lecture. On the last day of lecture before the final Dr. Colome handed out 6 handouts and we were held accountible for the informatin on all of the sheets that he never lectured on. His lectures are completly unorganized and his notes are just as bad. He has no flow and is very borring. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!

This man is an idiot. He should not be allowed to influence other minds with the crap he drones on and on about every day. He doesn't seem to know the material well, and when you aska question he doesn't know the answer to, he makes up some bs answer and tries to use vocab that is over your head so that he doesn't come out looking like an idiot(which he is). He is very narrrow minded about evolution, and if anyone hadn't noticed, it is still a THEORY, and hasn't been and never will be proven. Ifyou have to take him make sure you know all the practice tests he gives out PERFECTLY, 65% of the questions on the midterms and final is exactly the same(which just shows how lazy this man really is), also know all the obscure facts in the book and the ones he spits out randomly in class because that makes up the rest of the test. Don't take this guys at all cost, he is dumb, and anyone who has taken him, who isn't as dumb as him themselves, will know that he is really really dumb.

I don't know what everyone else is talking about...i effing loved colome! True his lectures were random, and he talks endlessly and repetitiously in lab, but his tests were straight forward (and right out of the practice exams he GIVES you)! There is no need to find old tests, he basically gives you the test before the exam! I feel colome is very intelligent and even if he is late to office hours he seems genuinely concerned about his students and willing to help.

Prof. Colome's lectures were boring. It is hard to pay attention, but you should definitely stay awake to take notes, because his tests are from lecture and handouts. I would recommend not buying the book for this class...I only opened it a few times to clarify a few things, but other than that it wasn't worth it. I would check to see if the library had one on reserve or share w/another person. His tests were easy; he gives you a practice test and the real test is basically the same test w/ a few things written differently and a few new ones added in. I also had him for lab. This was both boring and helpful...his lab lectures made a lot more sense to me, even if he did talk for an hour to an hour and a half every lab. However, he tended to give the same lecture he would in the regular lecture class. It was boring but it pounds the info into your head, and sometimes he says stuff in lab that is on the lecture test or vice versa.

To do well on his tests study his old tests... the tests are the same even when the answers were not lectured on, are not in the book or handouts, and can't even be found on the internet. Although he will ramble, his office hours are extremely helpful and he's pretty friendly. They're the only ways to get all the answers. Bring something to do in lecture to stay awake. Don't bother buying the book. I tried reading it for the first test but it didn't really help.

Dr. Colome is the funniest and most brilliant professor I have ever had in college! He has this sort of dry sense of humor that most people don't get but if you pay attention in class you just might catch one of his subtle and humorous jabs students or the government. It's a shame that most people tend to do sodoku or sleep in this class but pretty much every word that comes out of Dr. Colome's mouth is brilliant and probably on the test. Keep up with his crazy graphs and handouts photocopied from the 1970s and do his practice tests and go to his office hours and you will do fine. He's actually very likeable!

This guy is the man...at first your like WTF...but after you get to know him you realize how smart he really is...His tests are very easy AS LONG AS YOU WRITE DOWN WHATEVER HE SAYS AND WRITES ON THE BOARD...he can be a little tricky but not to bad... the only thing you'll be like WTF...is after he finished writing a phrase or sentence on the board he has this double tap...kinda funny i guess! Take HIM!!!!

He is super unorganized in lab and makes it very painful to sit through. it consisted of him lecturing for 2 hours and giving us 1 hour to do all of our experiments. The problem with him lecturing is about 3/4 of it was already covered in lecture by our other professor and the last 1/4 is the stuff we actually needed. He never knew what was going on with the other labs and lecture either. We had an extensive lab syllabus that the other labs used that was given by our lecture teacher and he just dismissed it and went on doing things his own way. He honestly didn't even know who the lecture teacher was the first day. Also, the first day of class he said there would be 2 midterms consisting of about 50-60 questions. This was true for the first one, which was about 4 weeks into the course. Then on the second midterm which was 2 weeks later he managed to put in 80 questions. Then all of a sudden he decided to give us a third midterm a week and a half later with 100 questions. So..he lied about only having 2 midterms, and then somehow he just crammed in a lot of small details (because there wasnt a lot of lecture between each of the last two tests) into the last two tests. On top of that, we had our final on the last day when half of our lab reports were due and our unknown report. I seriously turned in about 35 pages the day of our final. Oh and he is soooo opinionated he called our military the scum of the earth, and he thinks people shouldn't go to hospitals because the staff aren't checked for bacteria daily. He is seriously crazy. It is like he tries to make you fear bacteria when in fact most bacteria in the world are harmless and a lot of them do good things, too bad he only spends his time talking about diseases. Here is something you should remember and you will do well in this class: 20,000. He repeated that number at least a 100 times because that is how many deaths staph aureus causes a year. He also said that number for other bacteria which makes me question his statistics and general knowledge...he also uses things from the 1970s so that might be the number back then. I highly doubt that he has even learned anything new since he got his tenure. He pretty much does whatever he wants now because his job is safe.

As stated by the person below me, he is completely unorganized. I'm in the lab right now and we just took that midterm that the previous poster posted about. We were promised 2 midterms and he made 3. The hardest one being the 3rd! 100 questions in less than an hour on HARD shit. Complete memorization. The whole class probably failed. His lab is only hard because of this test. The lab final which is cummulative, hopefully won't be as ridiculous as this was. Questions that he NEVER covered. Seriously, this guy is insane. However, prior to this unworldly midterm, he is hilarious. He makes sooo many mistakes, but you just have to say it out loud and he will correct himself. So never write anything down until he begins to talk about it. So for all of you who are taking this lab just be prepared to stress the shit out of yourself the last 3-4 weeks of lab. Shit hits the fan and he does nothing to prevent that. Re-occurring theme and you would think he would change his methods.

I have never hated a teacher this much. I have always respected teachers even those I disagreed with or disliked but this guy does not have my respect. Yes, he knows the material. However, he stressed the wrong things for a class that most of us just had to take. I was really looking forward to Microbiology but I DREADED going to lab because of Dr. Colome. He lectures for 2 hours before we could even start our lab. We had pretty much weekly "quizes" aka tests that primarily covered what diseases certain bacteria caused. I feel he was biter because he is on retirement and a "FERP" faculty. He was fine during the actual lab. Wait no he wasn't. He totally screwed up one of our labs and I still have no idea what the hell we were doing. He seemed easy in the end: lab reports due only twice and they didn't have to be in a formal lab notebook...just a table of our results and quick summary. We also knew our unknown organism; we just had to figure out the species. I cannot stress enough...DO NOT TAKE HIM! Listen to eveyone else on here (unlike I did) and avoid him at all costs.

He is unable to explain in a way so the class understands and does not follow his own outline for the course and test on diseases rather than the basics for human genetics, explains things that he has yet to go over or will go into detail then will not test us on it or even make sense! I think i could teach the class better! Worst class i have taken ever!

I agree with may reviews in that Dr. Colome is under appreciated at this school. He is truly a brilliant man, but tends to be a bit scatter brained. I think that comes from so much information flying around in his head. I am long graduated from the school now, but he was a fun teacher. His tests were extremely hard for me. I am not a good multiple choice person and his tests are all multiple choice and the questions do not seem to come from the text nor lectures completely. As suggested below, try to get copies of his old exams, they are a gold mine as to his testing style and many of the questions are repeated verbatim, or he changes one word such as which of these is NOT rather than IS and that changes the answer to the question 180 degrees. Good luck with Jaime Colome.

He fails to present material in any organized way. Once he gave us a detailed lecture on molecular genetics, then came in the next class session to tell us that everything he told us was wrong. Instead of simply starting the lecture over he tried to make adjustments to the lecture as he gave it originally. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a waste of time and my notes were completely useless. I get the impression that something is organically wrong with Dr. Colome. He seems to be confused most of the time. P.S. If anyone from the administration is reading this evaluation please work with Dr. Colome for his early retirement. You owe it to the students, and the university as a whole, to preserve Cal Poly's otherwise high standard of instruction.

Nobody gives Dr. Colome any credit. I really enjoyed both classes that I took with him. He is a very knowledgable man, although sometimes he is a little confusing. Yes his classes are challenging, but they are definately doable. I never even opened the book or the supplement in Bio 351 and I got a C. Study your notes and make sure they are good. Write down everything, it will be on the test. Try not to miss class, but if you do, get notes from somebody.

If you take Colome, you'd better get out your road map. His lectures go from A to C to E to B back to C again...you get the picture. He is the epitome of the absent-minded professor. It's blatantly obvious that he knows exactly what his talking about--you'll go into incredibly minute details on things you'd never think of, such as the relationship between bacterial pilli and bacteriophage--but he just can't convey the information quite good enough. It's as if his mind is going 100 mph, but his mouth on 50. In many ways, he teaches as though you understand the basics and goes into much more depth then might be appropriate the class. Others have said it before, and I will echo them here: *get old exams* Seriously, it is the best way to tell what will be on the exam, and definitely study any handouts he gives you because they *will* appear on the exam. It's a shame that his lectures are so disorganized. He really is a smart, interesting professor to listen to, but it's so difficult to learn from him that I just can't give him higher ratings.

Jamie Colome is without a doubt the most underrated and unjustly criticized professor at Cal Poly. Many people decide in the first few lectures that they absolutely hate every aspect of Colome's teaching, these are the people that talk so much shit about this guy. Colome has a very unique teaching style. He tends to confuse himself and can be very disorganized at times. If you don

I learned very little in his class. The material was presented in a bias fashion. The exams do not accurately represent the lecture.
