Honestly, on the first day of class, I didn't have the best impression of Coleman~but he turned out to be great and I'm really glad I had the opportunity to take him and hope to have him again! His tests are pretty fair and very "do-able" as long as you at least look over the reading. He wrote the book, so his lectures just reinforce the text~which keeps things simple and you know exactly what to study.

I had Coleman for Soc 110 and he couldn't have made this class anymore straightforward. He presents the material clearly and understandably, and it's really not boring, all 2 hrs of it, because it's somewhat interesting stuff anyway. The tests are pretty much straight out of what he lectures on and what is in the text, but he also gives a study guide as to what you should read and study. There is only 1 short essay worth credit/no credit for that stupid writing requirement our school implements, so it's rather pointless. Exams are all multiple choice, and easy, but I still learned a lot in this class.

This class is easy, but the lectures are so boring. Coleman spends 2 hours explaining maybe 15 minutes of material. The tests are pretty easy and straight forward. He gives you a study guide which is clutch in knowing what material to study. Just read the book and try to stay awake in class.

Dr. Coleman knows what he's talking about. He's like an uncle though who talks and talks and your sure he's really bright, but it's more like he's talking to himself. It was always really funny though cause he would make overhead just for decoration or to make you think or something and so there would be a picture of earth sitting up there for the whole two hours! I thought it was funny. It's a good class to take, kinda generic, there were 3 tests, no real final, just like 3 midterms. The book has practice tests on the website, take those tests! Or read the book, you will need to because Coleman tends to talk about certain things for a long time and not get to all the information he wants you to know. So read! It was a good class though, I would recommend it for GE.

Profesor Coleman is not the best teacher. His lectures are more boring than you can imagine. I sometimes got angry because he was so repetitive. The class should only last a 1/2 hour max. I would reccomend another soc teacher, unless you want to waist several hours of your life. I could teach the class better. The only good part of class is that the tests are easy and you sometimes watch interesting videos.

Coleman clearly presents the material he wants you to know for the exams, and for a two hour class, doesn't over-do it (you get a break and usually get out of class early). The tests are fairly easy, as long as you understand the lectures & have at least skimmed the textbook. The only assignment is a 3-page-max paper from a selection of topics half through the quarter (graded credit/no credit).. He provided a good overview for a GE subject I probably won't see much of again.

This class was really easy but a little boring. He speaks really quietly, though, and in a lecture hall it is hard to hear him. The class has three equally weighted (very easy) multiple choice exams and one 3 page paper that is credit, no credit, or honors. He also gives a study guide for each test so you know what is going to be on it. It is mostly out of the text which is pretty easy reading. The class does tend to drag on but he usually gives a break half way through and lets you out early. Overall a pretty easy class that has some interesting material that is more relatable to life than some.

Wow, what a boring class. It was in the PAC so the seats were comfy and his monotonous voice puts you right to sleep. You don't REALLY have to go to class, but some of the stuff he talks about isn't in the reading. And since I never did the reading or stayed awake in class, my grade is self-explanatory. But the tests are ridiculous. The answers are so freaking obvious that you have to sit and think about it and argue with yourself for like five minutes per question. Oh well. A two hour class with this guy is a great sleeping period. It should be called NAP 110.

Coleman is very well informed. The class is easy. There are two midterms and the final is NOT comprehensive. There is one writing assignment, but he doesn't assign a letter grade to it, it is 4 -6 pages in length, and as long as you're not a moron, then you should do fine on it. I recommend the class if you want to boost your GPA.

Dr. Coleman will tell you that sociology isn't just common sense. After taking this class, I learned that it is. The material presented in one of Coleman's lectures can be summed up in about 5 minutes. The class drags on forever everyday, and I caught myself falling asleep more than half of the time. Although the tests aren't too hard, he grades on a curve, which pushes grades down. There is an extra credit paper that is due at the end of the course, but it only helps if you are on the edge of two grades, or have a low test score. I did the extra credit paper, and he didn't accept it because I was 4 points away from being "on the edge of two grades" whatever that means... I really think he just has the extra credit paper for you to think that it helps, but it really doesn't. He's not very approachable either. Lectures aren't up on blackboard so you have to go everyday. If you're easily bored... dont take Coleman.

Coleman is a good guy. The thing is, I could go into his class 100 percent awake and his soft, methodic voice put me right to sleep. And the fact that the material is less than breath-taking doesn't help either. All you have to do before a test is look over your notes, the study guide he gives you before each test, and just skim the book and highlight the major concepts and terms and you'll be fine. I could have easily got the A, but it was so damn boring. Bring coffee.

Professor Coleman is a really smart person with a lot of knowledge about sociology. But as a teacher, he has no idea how to hold the attention of a class. His lectures were so boring and sometimes hard to follow. I would say avoid this class if you can, but if you have to take it it is bearable, just try to take notes, read the book and try to stay awake.

Three tests are given. They usually have about 60 questions on them and are slightly curved. You should come to class everyday and do the reading. The tests are very difficult because of the way questions are worded. He is also very hard to hear. He does not attach a + or a - to anyones grade. I didn't like this because I only missed the A by a few points. There is a paper which is fairly simple. You are given credit, no credit, or honors. If you get credit it doesn't affect your grade, but if you pull honors you can boost your grade. This is a difficult class to stay awake in mostly because his voice is very monotone.

Very boring teacher!! His lectures are pointless and tests are hard. Your grade is based solely on two midterms and a final. All the tests are multiple choice. Everything he lectires on is in the book so you really only have to either go to the lectures or read. Almost impossible to get an A, but a B is easily attainable.

Took Coleman for sociology 110. If you aren't too interested in sociology, you will most likely fall asleep. The main reason is Coleman has simply a soft, monotone voice. He lectures like 2 hours twice a week, and they are probably the boringest 4 hours of your week. Sociology class became sudoku class. basically i only did work every 2 weeks by skimming the chapters and my notes. it seems like the class could've met only like 2 hours once a week. coleman blabs about the material for a while, a while most people would probably careless about. really easy to pull a b. if you want an A, you really got study hard and hope to get lucky on the tests. It is hard to get A's on the midterms or final simply because a couple questions are very ambiguous. overall, not a working class, just try to stay awake. you'll fall asleep even if you aren't tired. so pull out the sudoku puzzle and look up like every 5 minutes and you'll do fine. he gives you a list of terms to prepare for each midterm which helps, but otherwise not too student friendly. went to his office hours twice- he wasn't there. called him once and he was kinda rude giving an abrupt answer. i still did gain some from the class, but if i had a choice or if there is a choice, don't take coleman. if you have to take it, you'll live through it though.

His class could be interesting but it is a really big lecture and he does not do a good job of connecting with the students. He talks about really boring things and is not very helpfulin answering emails. The book is good and goes more in-depth. Good class to take for a GE because its not too hard to get an A.

His lectures are really boring, but as long as you study for the tests you should be fine. Pretty easy class. There were 2 tests and a final. And you had to write a term paper, however it was really easy and only took me like 3 hours. I would recommend him for this class

It's a hard knock life. Coleman wears an awesome hat and i'm not being sarcastic, but other than that, there is nothing awesome about this class with him. Harmon Hall in the PAC is the worst place to have a 2 hour lecture as more than half the class will fall asleep. I thought I paid close enough attention in his lectures and even took some notes on a laptop at times but still couldn't get an A on a midterm (class basically has 3 midterms + 1 term paper). His voice is really drousy and the material shouldn't be anything wild as it's mostly common sense and psychology. I don't know how much time the people who got A's studied for this class, but I guess I didn't study enough.

First off, he doesn't grade with +/-, so that can be a good thing, or it can suck. three midterms, first one was easy, other two were a little harder for me. His lectures are pretty much pointless.. he rambles on and on, and doesn't really go over everything. you HAVE to read the book. you teach yourself basically, he just slightly goes over main points. the paper is CR/NC.. he says you could get honors, but you probably won't. Oh, and one other annoying thing. he says he grades on a curve, but HE DOESN'T. he doesn't know what he's talking about. his curve MIGHT be like 1 point extra. stupid. sociology is a good subject. but coleman poorly taught it. boring.

Pretty easy class. Two midterms, one final, and an easy, short essay. The lectures were pretty boring, but they are very ridgid and quite easy to follow and to take notes. No homework in this class, but there is a lot of reading. You really don't need to go to class, if you read the book thouroughly you can easily pull of a B.

I really don't know why Coleman got some really negative reviews. He's a great guy and easy to approach if you have questions. He was really funny sometimes, and the things he said really caught you off guard. The tests were pretty straight forward. If you go to the lectures and read the assigned chapters, you'll do fine. Some of the stuff is memorization (Philisophers, facts, etc) but a lot of it is common sense. In response to what someone said about the curve -- after a test, he gives you a range of scores. The range could be 52-60 = A, and so fourth. (52/60 is about 87%, but with this curve, you can get lower scores and still get As on the exams.) Other times, he will knock off a few points and make the test out of 58 points or something along those lines. I don't think he uses BlackBoard to grade. The scores posted are just for you to see. Remember: A's ARE possible! Your final grade is determined by how well you did on your 3 tests (60 questions each, Final is NOT cumulative!) and a paper (Credit, No Credit or Honors). And YES, you can get an Honors because I did, despite only spending a couple hours on it. He is a fairly easy grader...as long as you do it, you'll get Credit. Overall, I enjoyed this class. I don't know how else a teacher is expected to "keep the attention" of a class besides just presenting their information with visuals, etc. After all, Sociology IS a dry subject. (Coleman does try to make it interesting, though.) This class wasn't just informative, but personally, I think that it gets you to question your life along with other's lives and realize how lucky we are in comparison to the Third World Countries. I definitely would recommend Coleman.

I would definitely NOT recommend this class if you are a psy major, as I am. I basically listened to a distorted lesson plan from PSY 201 except, and I am not kidding, he got a lot of basic facts WRONG. On more than one occassion he used the wrong name for people that had discovered various theories. I mean, yes, he seems like a nice old man. I just would not take him if you have any sort of background in psychology, it will only frustrate you. Other than that, the class is more than boring. His lectures are unneccesarily repetitve and the reading is bland. The tests were quite specific as well, so if you want to get an A on them, you must go to class and do ALL the reading. The C/NC paper he has us do is bullshit....You will never ever get the elusive "Extra Credit" grade, no matter how good your paper. Easy, freshmen level class, with more than the average GE work necessary to get an A.

This class is an incredibly easy, I highly recommend it as a GE class/GPA booster. Though Coleman tries his best to keep the huge class awake by making jokes, it is difficult to stay awake. One might be tempted not to go to class because he puts the powerpoints on blackboard, but he can spend up to 30 minutes talking about one slide with two sentences on it, so you should definitely go to class. Overall, the material is mostly common sense and the only memorization for tests is the names of the sociologists associated with different theories. His test questions for the final and two midterms come directly off of the study guides he puts on blackboard. The tests are your only real grades besides the essay which he gives you two months to do. I did mine in twenty minutes and got 5 points for honors which shows how easy a grader he is. Overall, TAKE COLEMAN! And try to stay awake...

Coleman explains the material well but can be incredibly boring and monotonous. This class is incredibly easy, however. With two multiple choice midterms and a final, you don\'t really need to go to class to get at least a B.

Coleman may not be the most interesting teacher, but I blame that mostly on the material itself. He tried his best to keep us entertained with jokes and such, but his monotonous tone and 2 hour long class nearly put me to sleep. The lecture notes are online though, and as the entire course is based on two or three tests going to class isn't always necessary as long as you understand the notes. Overall a very easy class.

Soc 110 is a boring GE class, and Coleman does what he can do make it a little better, but the class is just plain blah. 2 Midterms and 1 Final is what determines your grade, pretty straight-forward tests but he gets a little wordy and that can be confusing. You really don't even need to go to class, but if you don't make sure you read the book. If you do go to class, listen to what he says, not just the powerpoint and you won't need the book at all. Overall, it's an easy way to get out of the D3's but it's as boring as it gets.

Very straight forward introduction to sociology. Coleman is a nice man and tries as hard as he can to make the information interesting but it just isn't. There are 2 midterms and 1 final and that is what your grade is based on. You don't need the textbook but to get an A you need to go to class and pay attention.

GREAT. If you show up to class it's an easy A. Actually, even if you don't it's an easy C. First few weeks I didn't really ever go to class, and I got a C+ish on the exam. Then I started going to more classes because it picked up and got an A on the exam. After that I must have gone most days but missed 3-4ish, and I think I did ok on the final b/c I ended up with a B flat. =]

COLEMAN IS THE SHIT!!! To be honest, sociology was pretty freaking boring but coleman tried his best to make the material interesting by adding humor in his lectures. His tests are very straightforward and 3 midterms is what makes up your grade. Super chill dude and very approachable. I would recommend this class and this instructor, but keep in mind that the class will be super boring

Coleman is a straight up G. If you looking for a teacher whose going to push your knowledge beyond the words in the text, and teach you how to handle your ass in the real world... well shit this is the class for you. You don't got to be stressin everyday like damn "i got to write an essay on how the chinamen built the railroad" because its only 3 tests and no homework or in class assignments. The tests aren't even that hard; what your 20 some yrs old and you trippin on some test cause you higher than a damn kite. Well it ain't like that; i'll just be sitting in class just came from Greens 102 with Mr. Macjenkins, and then mothaphuckin jones comes in with party size doritos. I mean i ate so many doritos i couldn't even tell you what time it was. Even sitting next to mothaphuckin jones i still came out that class with more knowledge than a dictionary on replay. He'll teach you the big picture like how polar bears are actually black they just have white fur. You see what i'm saying the worlds complex its time you recognize. So come on Big Boy pick your sack up from off the ground, and sign yourself up. Coleman is the man, he straight up cooks the books.

Super boring class, just lectures every day with a few videos once in a while. 3 multiple choice tests for the final grade. information very easy, just memorization and common sense. I just went to the lectures and didn't read the book and ended up with a B, so with a little more work it's an easy A

Coleman is pretty good and the tests are easy. The only bad thing is he doesn't use plusses or minuses in his grading. Reading the book is very important. BOOK FOR SALE - Sociology: A Brief Intro 7th Ed - $40

Coleman is a cool guy and a great teacher! Unfortunatly his class is rather dry. Mostly just lectures with 3 midterms that make up the grade. Howver, he does his best to make the dry material more interesting.

Don't hesitate to take Coleman! His lectures are pretty boring but his class is easy. The only thing that makes up your grade are 3 multiple choice tests with 60 questions each. The last test is the final and it is not cumulative. I would recommend going to class and try to pay attention then read the chapters in the book the night before the test and you should be able to get a decent grade.

Coleman is a pretty cool guy. Makes the class as interesting as it can be. That being said, I never went to class after the second week. I glanced over the book before the tests and did his study guides. I studied for maybe a total of 10hrs over the course of the quarter and pulled off a B, easily. This class was terribly boring. Dr. Coleman is super hard to hear if he doesn't have a microphone, so I recommend sitting near the front of the class if you actually want to hear what he has to say. There are 3 exams for this class, all weighted equally. These are all your grade is based off of, there is no final so keep that in mind. I rarely ever paid attention, never read the book and got a B. Just look over the study guides and the rest is mostly common sense.

This teacher was dope. His lectures were stale and he's quite aware so he tries to make it interesting. The biggest thing i liked, was i didn't have to go to class. If you do the reading (which believe me you should), you can easily get a B. If you go to lecture to get the random movie question answers you'll get an A. Seriously that simple. If you do neither, common sense will get you a C. I should know, I got A on the first test, a C on the 2nd, and a B on the third. Sadly he "rounds" your grade. So having a 87 does not mean a B+ it means a B. BUT a 81 doesn't mean a B- it means a B. So it can either be good or bad. I liked him, take him if you can and may the odds be in your favor.

Dr. Coleman is great. He is clearly brilliant, his lectures can be a little boring (that might be because I think sociology is pretty boring), and he class is easy! I studied for 8 hours total this quarter and got an A. If you pay attention in lecture and take good notes, you will do fine!

Coleman randomly rambles on in class (and ALWAYS takes up the full two hours). He has no structure to his lectures, and they are always very hard to follow. However, he was very helpful when I went to go talk to him during his office hours. If I had a choice I wouldn't take this class again.

Whoa who knows where this guy gets his exam questions? I went to every class, took notes, and read and took notes on the book information yet every test I would go and be thoroughly confused. His lectures don't have any structure, perhaps because it is the first time this class has been offered, you don't know when to take notes and when to just listen. He randomly jumps from topic to topic and he's not very interesting. I did learn alot from reading the book however, regardless of my grade. The information is kinda cool it would just be more helpful to have some kind of hint as to what is going to be on the exam. He's a very nice person, however I would not recommend him as a professor, at least for SOC 218.

Professor Coleman is fair. I found both the material and his lectures to be very interesting. It is true that his lectures had little substance, but I still found him easy to listen to. The problem with this course is the amount of reading involved. He would assign 200 pages of reading from the text, and he would derive like 10 questions on the final exam from the reading. It would have been helpful if he had provided some sort of study-guide. But overall he's not a bad guy, he offers extra credit, and wants you to do well.

Coleman is an extremely nice guy, but the course itself seemed like it was really difficult to teach~ and it was really hard to stay awake. I dreaded the class, but not b.c of the teacher. As long as you read and take semi-decent notes you should get at least a B. I fgound that going to class helped a lot.

When I took this class it was in a big lecture. Coleman is a nice guy and presents the material clearly, although he is sometimes difficult to hear and the lectures kind of drag. The text is not the most exciting, but it is not that bad either. There was one paper - graded for credit or no credit and then three multiple choice tests each worth a third of your grade. OK choice to meet a GE.

Coleman is one of the best professors at Poly. He is very articulate, approachable and witty. Take thourough notes though

Professor Coleman is a great instructor. He has a great amount of knowledge on his subject and is able to present it in an organized and interesting manor.

Dr. Coleman seems is a nice guy, but not a great teacher. Going to lecture did not help, since a majority of the test was based on information from the reading, which was a lot. Do not think that soc 218 is an easy class, because you will definitly have to work to get a good grade.

ok... i found this class to be interesting and enjoyable... BUT i am also the type of person who is very interested in international politics and the economy... SO if ur not terribly interested in these subjects... u might want to think hard about whether or not to take this class... prof coleman was in my opinion a very good teacher... he explained things extremely clearly, went over what was on the exams and was generally knowledgeable and friendly. The work load was pretty heavy but not overwhelming, there is A LOT of reading so keep up!! Go to class because it really helps on the tests.

Coleman rules. His lectures were entertaining and I felt like I actually learend a lot from this class. He does assign a lot of reading but if you just skim through them and take good notes, it's not that bad. There are three midterms that are 30% each and a paper that's 10%. The final is not cumulative so it reduces your work load.

BORING! If you are looking for an interesting class that you can stay awake in, don't take this one! Honestly, everyone in there is either trying not to fall asleep, playing solitaire on their laptop, or texting. The tests are 50 Question multiple choice. And it's almost impossible to pass the test by just writing down what's on the lecture slides. Be sure to write down what he says in class!

International Political Economy: the subject sounds bad, but the teacher was even worse. He really is a nice old man, but that doesn't change the fact that the class was IMPOSSIBLE! I read the text in its entirety, went to every class session, and stopped by his office hours TWICE. I put SO much effort into studying and writing that stupid essay, and for what? So his disorganized tests could taunt all of us with their questions on never-before-seen content? Urgh! This class really frustrated me. I thought Coleman could have taught it SOOOO much better.

IPE: He really loves the topic he teaches. REALLY. Sometimes he goes off to far on a tangent that he thinks is relevant. But he never puts any of that info on the test. Each lecture was powerpoint with him trying to talk into a microphone. Nothing exciting ever. (except maybe the film on Walmart)Do the reading like he says and you will pass. He curved both of our tests and i bet our final too.

I guess this class could have been a lot worse. He gives 2 midterms and a final, plus a paper that he grades credit/no credit/honors. That's it. It's understandable considering how many people are in the class, but it leaves no room for mistakes. He teaches straight from powerpoint slides, it's pretty boring, there's always that one annoying student who wants to clarify EVERYTHING and is horribly interested in the class, but coleman is a good teacher and he'll try to answer any questions you have.

3 midterms, 1 paper that is credit/no credit. studied good deal for the first exam, did ok, just because he curves..(it's GE, he shouldn't have to curve, just make the questions related), but the second one studied even more, got the same grade, last one didn't study or read, got an A. So pretty much moral is- the exams aren't based on his lectures or reading, as much as your personal knowledge going into the class and if you write down the little things he mumbles, cuz thats what he tests on. Tries to trick you, lectures feel realllllyyy longggg, even with friends in the class with you.

Very easy class didnt go to class since week 4. Just fill out the study guides he posts online or borrow notes and you are fine. Tests are just straight memorization and there is almost always a curve for each one. Final is also just a 3rd midterm and the paper is crazy easy. Definitely take this class for GE D its bomb.

Coleman was a good teacher, fairly interesting class, fair grader, two midterms and an essay that was basically pass or fail. If you don't like sociology then you won't like the class, obviously but if you make an attempt to be engaged it will be interesting and straitforward.

I thought this was going to be a boring class when I signed up for it, but it turned out to be pretty interesting. The class is twice a week and 1 hour and 50 min long, but Coleman almost always lets the class out 10 to 15 min early. The class is extremely easy. It's much easier than any history, government or economics class you had in high school. Coleman is a pretty cool guy. Sometimes he'd spend the first 10 minutes of class or so talking about current events and news. The actual lecture pretty much consists of powerpoint presentations. On average you take about 2 to 3 pages of powerpoint outline notes a day. There is absolutely no homework assigned. Your grade in the class only consists of two 50 question multiple choice midterm exams, one 3-page term paper that is graded credit, honors(extra credit), or no credit, and finally the final, which is not cumulative and only 50 multiple choices questions. The topic for the term paper is a current event (ours was the global financial crisis). I think in the past he has given students the choice of several topic to write about. The questions on the midterm exams and the final exam are pulled from the powerpoint lecture notes, any movies you watch in class, and from the book. Before you freak out about having to read a book, relax. The book is only 200 some pages and it's fairly easy to read. The book is "World Poverty" by Cal Poly Professor Harold Kerbo. You almost really don't need to read the book, or even go to class for that matter. A few days before a midterm or the final exam, Coleman will put all the powerpoints on Blackboard as well as a study list of terms, people, and other things that will be on the exam. I wouldn't advise not going to class because the powerpoints are just the bare bones of what the notes are and you'll miss out on some of the extra stuff Coleman says. If you are going to read the book, you only have to know the material when the exam comes around (every 3-4 weeks). Overall it's an easy class and if you have to take a Area D2 class, this is the one to take.

I really loved this class. Dr. Coleman was very informative. He keeps the material interesting and makes subtle jokes to keep the large classroom awake. The first day I sat in the middle of the huge classroom and I could hardly hear him, but he brought a microphone the next lecture and I also sat in the front, so that was a big improvement. I thought the class was incredibly interesting, especially because the world economy was changing while the class was being taught. Every lecture Dr. Coleman would tell us a little bit about what was going on in the current economy and political arena, which I enjoyed because he wasn't teaching us in a bubble; he would relate what he was teaching to what was actually happening in the present day. If you love history, you will love this class because that is what one major part of the class was about. At times the lecture information and the book is depressing because of all of the poverty in other countries. There are two exams and a final, but the final is exactly like the other two exams: not cumulative, 50 multiple choice questions. There is also one three-page paper due as well. Not a major workload, but I do suggest reading the textbook as much as possible. It helped me retain the information given in the lecture, because the exams get pretty specific. The second exam was more difficult than the first, in my opinion. He also uses Blackboard to post his lecture PowerPoints and is pretty fast in getting our tests grades to us. Overall, I absolutely recommend taking this class with Dr. Coleman.

Dr. Coleman's sociology 218 class was at times interesting, but overall extremely boring. On the other hand, Coleman is a very nice, caring individual. He just puts the class to sleep and its a 2 hour class. I got an A in this class because I studied with a few friends right before each test. We combined our notes and went through everything on his study guide. I'd say for the whole quarter I spent a total of about 5 hours studying for this class

Dr. Coleman's class stucture is very straightforward. Go to class, take good notes, study notes, skim book, read the interesting stuff, take the test, and finally, get a good grade. This class was a combination of Sociology and Psychology. It deals with the human behavior in social settings which, if you find it interesting, is the class for you. His lecture style is very thorough, so he gives many examples to prove or clarify the current subject matter. He encourages class participation and when the students are active the class is highly enjoyable. He has a good sense of humor(ie. witty sidenotes) and is very open minded. Higly Recommend. Take notes, not only on whats on the board but his emphasized points. Ask him questions he will be strait forward, even reguarding tests. Sick teacher take him if you get the opportunity, he wants you to do well

I did not enjoy taking this class with Prof. Coleman. The subject is interesting, but he seems to have a bit of a smug presentation of it, and the lectures were actually rather boring. His tests were very difficult because they were all written short answer/essay. There is a great deal of reading assigned, but when test time came it was based heavily on lecture notes (take good notes) so the reading was rendered virtually irrelevant. There is also a research paper assigned. He's a nice guy, but I found it hard to stay awake in his class.

Coleman's tests were pretty hard because they were all short answer questions. There were 3 midterms, a research paper and an optional final. Class is boring but you have to take good notes. Study evrything for the tests, you don't know what's on it. I thought I was going to get a B in the class but I didn't. I know 3 people who got C's and one person who finished with a B. If you are a Soc major you will probably do better than I did. Good luck if you you take him. Like a fat kid in dodge ball, I'm out.

Coleman is a very smart man,no doubt...and he darn well knows the subject of the sociology of religion. However, it was hard keeping my eyes open during the two-hour lecture. Study his book about buddhism because he knows if you b.s. it on a test. Also, most of the other two books are useless. Pay attention in class or get notes and you will do fine. Tests are all short-answer instead of multiple choice, so you better know what you are talking about. If you write well and memorize well, take this class. If you can't memorize an insane amount of religious terms, dont.

This calss was actually really interesting, and informative, and I know I learned A LOT, however, by looking at my grades on the tests, you'd think I never made it to class, when I actually never missed a single lecture. He really knows what he's talking about, however, his tests are very subjective. You will have the same answer as the kid behind you, yet he'll get 7 points out of 10, and you'll get 5. He doesn't base his grading on a really accurate scale and gives you no feedback why your answer was incorrect. The essay you have to write is also so open that when I got my grade back, I really wasn't sure why he bothered assigning the paper with so much freedom because he told me I needed to narrow it down, or talk about something more interesting. Yet, the topic was interesting to me, and I wrote it really well. Also, don't bother buying the buddhism book if you're planning on going to the lectures, it's pretty dense, and whatever you need to know, he lectures on. The other too books are pretty helpful when tests rolled around, but sometimes contradicted what he said in lecture.

Okay, so soc of religion was a class that I took because it fit into my schedule. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't easy. It didn't seem to matter if I studied or not, I always seemed to get a C on the exams. He does curve, which worked out in my favor. It was an ok class, he didn't strike me as being all that into either. If you have to take a class for D5, you could take this one-but make sure that there's not something out there that you would like better.

The material is really interesting (especially if you are interested in Religion) Coleman is kind of monotone so sometimes it is hard to stay awake in class, but overall the class isn\'t that hard. There is reading, but not a ton. My advice would be read during the quarter rather than just before the midterm and the final. There is 1 midterm, a paper and the final. He curves the tests which is really nice. For my class a 85 was 100% on the midterm and 80 was 100% on the final.

Good professor that says everything you need to know in lecture. The lectures can be boring sometimes. 2 midterms, the first one is worth less than the 2nd midterm and final. The final is worth the same as the second midterm. Go to class and take notes of pretty much everything he says. Rarely ever used the book. He provides study guides for every test. Overall, it is a fairly easy GE, if you go to class everyday.

Dr. Coleman was a good instructor, who had many cool speakers from the field of criminal justice. His tests were easy, and the reading was almost fun. Don't expect a paper, but expect to talk in class--you'll want to.

Dr. Coleman is a great professor. I have had him for 4 classes now, and he has been a good professor in every setting. He is a fair grader, very knowledgable about his topics, and is VERY approachable and willing to help you if there is something you need. Yeah, I know his classes are not the most fun out of all the poly classes, but get over it, they are required. He showed us some cool videos and had some speakers, which was cool. One thing I know pissed him off was when we would take a break half way through the class and for some reason some people would always return late, and he seemed irritated. If you are in the class, it will go by faster if you participate, even if you have no fucking ide of what your talking about. Well actually in that case, dont say anything. I liked Coleman. Take him over anyone else teaching this stuff.

Coleman made a course that should be interesting (crime and violence) pretty dry and boring. He is a nice guy and knows what he is talking about. There is absolutely no work (other than reading) outside the midterm and final. Pretty straight forward material. If you can past the fact that he puts you to sleep during lectures, this class is worth it

Dr. Coleman was way chill. His lectures are extremely boring (as mentioned numerous other times) but he tries to mix it up by showing movies and documentaries in class. Class is super easy, no need to buy the book because all the test information is from the lecture material. There is one midterm, one final, and a paper that's credit/no credit. Super easy stuff. If you go to class and take good notes (study for a bit) and you'll get a solid B+ Anything more than that you'll get an A.
