Funny fellow. Covered a lot of sysadmin type stuff and put his foot down on the "right" and "wrong" ways of doing things. A lot of the questions on the labs and tests were right out of lecture. Class was fun and engaging most of the time - but the course offers at most a top-level view of the various topics, so don't expect a lot of depth. He's really helpful in office hours. Cool guy overall and I recommend this class if you want an additional 2 units. This course was by no means difficult.

If you know anything about linux / unix you can get away without going to class or reading. If you don't have much unix bg, go you class and you'll be fine. If you're retarded, buy the book, read, and go to class. Find Don and ask him questions on the hw, midterm, and final. There is no reason anyone should get less than an A in this class.

All I can say is that I didn't really learn a thing from this class. His midterm and assignments are difficult unless you had a strong background in Unix prior in taking the class.

Erickson won't be teaching the class anymore--he's retiring. However, this is a pretty good class to take. It was more work than I anticipated, but not a hell of a lot more. Fairly broad coverage of sysadmin topics, a good intro to the field, and only two units, so it doesn't get too old too quickly. I wish that this one had been a bit more hands-on, but that's okay. I'd recommend it. Cotton-picking!

Stay with it, this class seems like it gets hard at times but if you go to his office hours in advance he will basically do the hardest parts for you. I learned a lot of background info about UNIX and got a good overview but not enough to do much hands on. I was expected for student particpation in this class. The assignments seem hard but I suggest working in groups and going to his office hours. If you do this you will be fine.
