This class was an easy A as long as you went to lecture and did the objectives on the study guides for her exams. At first glance at the syllabus it seems like you are going to be swamped in papers and busy work, but really its not a huge deal at all. She grades the papers really easliy, as long as you show interest in the subject. I actually learned a ton in this class and really enjoyed it too. Going to class was alwasy relaxed and laid back. One of the best parts was getting to watch 3 films in class for credit- definietely take this class from her- she is such a sweet lady and really cares about her students and the subject matter.

Professor Garcia-Lemus was a great insturctor. She went above and beyond the call of a teacher to help with assignments and making sure that things were understood. The tests are easy if you fill out the study guide that she gives you before each test. The written assignments are also fairly easy, she just likes to know your opinion and why you feel what you do. I would recommend taking this course because it is easy as well as very informative.

Dr Garcia Lemus is such a sweet lady. She was so cute and just had a lot of information she wanted to convey. The assignments aren't hard, you write 2 papers that are actually kind of fun, but long and they do take some time but you can do it like the weekend before and it'll be fine. The tests are pretty easy if you study the study guide a couple times. Take her instead of Psy 254 because its a lot easier and we get to watch movies!

garcia-lemus is literally the cutest professor ever. she always had a big smile on her face and used the softest voice ever heard by man kind. that aside, the class itself is really straightforward. you have some assignments (that are SO EASY) throughout the quarter, three exams and a couple long papers (again REALLY EASY). the exams are really easy to figure out, the study guides that she gives you are the exact test. if you answer these questions and then study those notes you will get an A guaranteed. she is easy to approach and talks about her kids quite a bit, which is funny cause she gets kinda into the stories. TAKE HER, she is awesome!

Garcia-Lemus is a great professor she really knows her material and helps out the students. For EDUC 207 she taught the psycological development of children, which was very interesting and fun to learn. I had a great time in her class and the projects we did were fun and worth the time! Take her!

This class was great. Her enthusiasm and lectures always stimulated class discussion. She created a very positive environment and I think it would be safe to say that everyone in the class felt comfortable commenting, asking questions, etc. There were three tests including the final. The two midterms were multiple choice and short answer and the final was all essay (but don't worry - you will be prepared!) She also assigns a total of five small interviews or observations which were simple but great learning experiences. My experience with this class and professor was very positive. I highly recommend!

This class is great! The professor provides clear, and quick lectures, and tries to incorporate different teaching techniques for different learners. She shows videos, gives handouts, and asks questions for class discussions. Studying for her tests is a breeze. She tells you EXACTLY which questions she will ask on her tests, so just listen when she tells what will be on it. I studied the day of her exams and felt fully prepared when I took the test. It's a good idea to go to all of the lectures, but the material is interesting and she makes it fun, so it's pretty much worth it. She's very friendly and approachable if you have questions. I highly reccomend this proffesor if you want a laid back class that's worth your time.

Garcia-Lemus is an excellent professor. I enjoyed her lectures and look forward to attending her class even at 7 pm. She is very reasonable and understanding. She mainly tests on her lectures and all reading assignments are for background information. She is very straightforward and does not believe in surprises. There are 2 midterms and one final. She also requires about 4 interviews that are very insightful and help you learn more about yourself, friends and family. Highly recommended!!!

This class was the best class I have ever taken at Cal Poly. There is so much information to learn in a 10 week period and this instructure does an excellent job in doing so. There are a total of three test including the final and she fully prepares for all of them. I learned so much in this class and enjoyed every moment. Take this instructor.

Mary is a wonderful lady -- she's just glowing all the time. This class was very interesting and fast-paced. You basically cover the entire lifespan in a ten week course, so be prepared for a LOT of information. It's all fascinating and applicable to your life though...I was never bored. There are 2 multiple choice exams and a cumulative essay final. The final is CAKE because she lets you pick what you want to write about. Trust me its no biggie. I didn't really use the book, and considering it's like $100 it might be in your best interest to share with a friend or something. Just come to class (she has activities and guest speakers and it'll hurt your grade if you're not there) and enjoy cause Mary is really cool!! I can't wait to take her for Parent-Child Relationships --- I hear that's great too.

Overall Mary was a fair proffesor. She gives a study guide to go off of for the midterms so if you folow them there's no reason to get less than a B in the class. She does try to be helpful and answers emails promtly and you will learn a fair amount. With that said however I have to warn any males or conceincous females not to take her class. She repeatadly blames men for fictitous social problems. For example every chance she gets she blames men for the wage gap, which is interesting since social sceintists haven't listed sexism as a cause for the gap in well over a decade. If you can put up with things like that though take her and get the easy grade.

Follow the study guides and you will do allright. I dont beleive she takes roll for that class, but it's been a few quaters since I had her. There are some assighnments, the largest of which requires you to find some one of another "culture" and interview them. The questions are all premade by her, and you can add any you feel are important. It was a pretty racist assighnment really, a way for her to force "acceptance" of other people because if you included anything about their culture that seams less than positive she makes a rude and pointed comment about it, even when it is true. She actually wrote comments back to my interviewee about his statments of his culture, as if he would care what MY teacher thought about HIS opinouns of HIS culture. Plus Mary went to the bother of seperating Mexicans into many groups such as Mestizo, Latino, Mexican, Mexican American, Hispanic, etc and yet religated anyone of European or light skinned ancestry to "white" status. She's a racist, to be blunt.

This was an awesome class. I learned so many different things. Dr. Garcia-Lemus is always helpful. If you go to class every day and pay attention, the midterms aren't hard at all. Make sure to study her handouts and you'll do fine. Regarding the comment a couple of people down, I've never seen her to be racist at all. She was always really caring and respectful of everyone in the class. This is a great class to take and I would recommend her to everyone I know.

I'd advise people not to take this teacher at all, but admitidly its not a tremendously difficult class. The exams have learning objectives that help a lot. One of the papers designed to cram cultural "exeptance" down peoples throat is spelled out pretty clearly, so it doens't take horribly long. I don't think she takes roll but there's one or two in class exercises you'll want to do for the credit so I recommend always going. In my class we watched some movie about these diffrent generations of asian women...I forget what its called but it was intertaining, I guess you could rent it instead of going. And to the person who wrote below me I hope your comment is removed from this site. People should write about what you do in the class, homework asighnments and exams etc, and what kind of proffesor the person is, not just saying "No, the other persons wrong! Mary's great!" Thats just a reflection of your feelings for her, not anything about her teaching abilities or more importantly WHY your saying what your saying. The fact of the matter is Mary does say biggeted things. She does excuse racism from other people because of their "culture", and she does blame men for womens problems. I can easily understand how someone could think she's a bigot, so just try not to let her pleasant smile fool you, not all bad people have long mustaches and swasticas on thier arms, most are the ones you like. Hitler won popularity contests too, it sure didn't make him a good person though.

she was a sweet lady, but i hated her teaching style. i felt like i was in junior high again, where you have to have EVERYTHING spelled out for you. the way she had us take notes thoroughly annoyed me. however, i still found the class really interesting. we watched some awesome videos, and the material was very relevant and useful. easy class, easy A, good guest speakers, nice woman.

My sweetest teacher so far at Poly. She presents the material in a way everyone can understand. Always has a big smile on her face. Good lectures. We have a few papers to write but she is a fair grader. The midterms are easy and for the final, you get to choose between all multiple choice questions or 6 short essays. I highly recommend her. You'll always look forward to going to class.

This class was amazing. One of those rare courses where I was actually sad when it was over. At first you take notes based on what she puts on the overhead and says. After 2 weeks, she has powerpoint slides that you bring to class and she lectures on them. Pay attention to what she says is "very important" it's usually on the exam. The class is made up of 2 exams which are mostly multiple choice and a few short answer, the final which is all short answer ( you get to choose 6 topics that you have learned about in the class or what to research on your own and basically prepare what you are going to say ahead of time...you can't use notes on the final but I re-wrote my drafts of the topics so many times that I had it down by the final), 50 easy points are given to you for participating in in-class activites, and lastly you have 4 interviews that you do which are 15 points each...each of the interviews usually takes 2 hours to do the actual interview or observation and then the write-up) If you put in the time, an A is definatly obtainable. The professor is very approachable, knowledgeable and makes the class interesting to go to. She incorporates, powerpoint, overhead, movies, and handouts into her lectures. I would highly recommend taking Developmental Psychology with her.

After reading some of the comments, I was a little hesitant on taking her for this class, but she ended up being a great teacher. She's this small cute lady who presents things super clearly and is approachable. The class however, did consist of a lot of material. It's definitely not difficult, it was just a lot to cover. The first few chapters she basically reads notes verbatim for us to copy, which seems tedious, so if you write slow, bring a laptop. Then we start bringing in powerpoint slides where we fill in blanks, and the last portion of the class we just have guest speakers lecturing and it's more relaxed. We had 4 interview assignments which weren't that bad...I wish we just had a choice of doing 2 instead of having to do 4..but they're easy points if you do them right. For the first two tests...just pay attention in class and briefly go over notes and you'll do fine. I honestly didn't study as much as I could have but I still got A's on the tests, go to class...we usually got let out early. She's nice! take her!

i really enjoyed this class she is a cute lady and she is really passionate about the course material. She always tells funny stories about her kids. She usually lectures from powerpoint where you have fill in the blanks or she'll dictate definitions and other important things that will be on the tests. She moves fast so don't forget to print out the powerpoints or you won't get all of the information. There are only 4 short essay assignments and they're really easy points if you do them right, i actually thought they were fun to do. there are also a bunch of attendance quizzes so going to class is a must. The midterms are multiple choice with a few short answer questions but she gives you a review sheet with all the stuff you need to know for the exams which is nice even though its a lot of information. i didn't study a ton and i got an A easily. This class is easy and interesting! take her!

Mary is one of those professors who makes sitting through a three hour lecture (two times a week) enjoyable!! She is smart, funny, and incredibly clear about what she expects from her students. She gives great feedback and is really passionate about what she teaches. This is the second class I have taken from her and I'm really looking forward to enrolling in another one next Fall. Even though this was Mary's first time teaching Psy 323 she was organized and knew how to be flexible when necessary. The class is demanding (especially the first 6 weeks of the quarter) but it gets better and by the end there really isn't much to do!

This comment goes out to whomever keeps on calling Professor Garcia-Lemus a racist! I suggest that you learn about what's around you and the culture around and stop being so naive and racist. The only reason you are bothered by her class is because you are reluctant to learn about racism, which exists up until today for your information. And learn how to spell would you? I have taken many of Professor Gacia-Lemus' classes and she is a beautiful person whose teaching style is simple yet educational. If you want to open your eyes and minds to what REALLY is going on in the world besides the bubble you find yourselves in San Luis Obispo, then take her! You won't regret it!

Mary Garcia-Lemus is by far the greatest proffessor here at Cal Poly!! I have had her for the last two quarters for Developmental and for Parent-Child Relationships. Her lectures are very clear and enjoyable. She wants everyone in her classes to do well, so her tests are very straightforward and from her lectures. I have enjoyed her classes so much i am taking her next quarter for The Helping Relationship. Take Garcia-Lemus if you ever get the chance!!!!! You won't want to miss a class guaranteed!!! :)

Such a great teacher! She is so nice, her class lessons are always interesting and she explains everything very well. Her tests are tough but if you study, you should do well becuase she tells you exactly what will be on each test. We had to write one research paper and do one presentation but she only made us do the presentation for a group of four so it wasn't scary or anything. You should definitely take one of her classes (or all of them). She is one of my favorite teachers at Poly.

I personally wouldn't have gone as far as the person below to call Mary a racist but they are entitled to their own opinion, even if it is an ignorant one. Mary's classes are not all that exciting and she can get a little scatter-brained at times, but she grades easy and if she knows you have put in the effort and at least attended her lectures she will work with you. If you attend the classes and skim the book you should be fine, the parent presentations you have to do can seem a bit much but its not all that hard. I had to drop this class a previous quarter, and had taken Lisa Sweatt, and let me say I think this is the teacher to take for this course. Let me repeat, this class is not exciting, but not every class is. Just make sure you attend class, thats my only advice.

Professor Garcia-Lemus is reasonable, very approachable, and interesting. Her class is the type of class that isn't hard, but you do have to put in your time. Low stress, high amount of useful things learned. Her tests are not difficult. Just review the study guides she gives you. I read the first few chapters but realized that it was a poor use of my energy and time. Trust me, just study the study guides and pay attention in class and you'll get close to an A. Again, she's pretty cool. I couldn't come to class one day and she gave me the video that the class watched so I could be on the same page. Also, I was one of 3 guys in the class, and she really wanted to hear the male perspective as well (this was a parenting class). Great class.

sweetest teacher I've ever had. She is a very nice, soft spoken and willing to help her students. SHe wants her students to do well and accomodates them when needed. ALthough this class was an esay A, there is a lot of work- sometimes busy work, that you have to do to get that A. But if you want an A, you'll get it. 3 test, a few short honework assignments, an easy family assesment paper, and a very easy presentation. DON'T be scared of the presentation, its in front of 4 other ppl, sitting in a circle and you teach a parenting strategy, and you grade eachother. Would definitely recommend this class and this teacher

She was a good professor. You can tell by her stories that she is a nice lady and a good mother. She was prepared for class, but she often let us out early. (Even an hour early when she could not get a video to play!) Usually, we got out half an our early, which was nice for a late class. She has lots of small writing assignments: create three questions to ask a panel, respond to the panel, observe a parent child interaction and write a paragraph about it, etc, and two real paper. Neither of which were very difficult. She grades very fairly/easily as well. All the small assignments are credit/no credit for participation points. The tests are straightforward and follow the study guide. It is mostly multiple choice with some short answers. She tells you what the short answer questions are ahead of time. Be warned though, on the second test there were some questions not on the study guide, but she had mentioned in class they would be on the test. The final is even less point than the midterms and not cumulative! Over all a pretty good class. Makes you think.

Mary Garcia-Lemus is one of the best professors that I've had at Poly. She truly cares about all of her students and wants to see them succeed. You can tell that she takes all learning styles into consideration when developing her curriculum which is why she provides a very detailed syllabus, fill-in notes, and she is very thorough when she goes over the assignments. She provides her students with a study guide for exams. Study everything on them because the majority of it is on the exams. There is a lot of material that is covered throughout the course, but it is all very interesting. She brings members in from the community to share their experiences on culture, same-sex marriage, and diverse parenting. I think this is important since Cal Poly isn't very diverse, nor is San Luis Obispo. Overall, this class was a great experience for me and I recommend that you take this class. She is an amazing professor and person!

Overall she is a very sweet teacher, but I am not spending money here at Cal Poly for nice teachers. I want to learn and this class taught me nothing. This Professor would make continuous mistakes including using the word Normal when talking about development which is a huge problem in the psych world. She was not able to elaborate on information when students asked questions. Although she does have the basic knowledge of Parent-Child relationship in different cultures she should not be teaching a 400 level class. Especially since a lot of the work we spent our time on was busy work and did not teach us any new information. She brought up tough topics such as death without any warning and expected us to open up about our experiences and feelings in very awkward silences. The only positive thing she did was the panels she brought in they were all very interesting and we learned a lot from them. Her exams were poorly written and she could not explain why some of the multiple choice answers were the answer she chose. Overall the exam was easy because she isn't a very educated teacher. She would be great at 200 level teaching. Kinda Easy grade boost but does not challenge you in any way.
