I was (graduated) an electrical engineering student and I practically have to live in a box. Needless to say, although my major courses were interesting and I actually found them to be fun, they did not provoke as much thought as Dr. Harlan's class. He lectures with great passion and is interested in dialogue. What I found interesting about this man's style is that he could really give a rat's ass about specific dates, etc. That's what The History Channel is for. Instead, Harlan is more interested in certain attitudes that existed during specific eras of U.S. History. For those of you that want to know if he's an easy 'A' or 'B'. Then read further. If you're worried about his tests, don't be. He gives you the topics nearly a weak in advance to write about. Show up to class and take a few notes. In fact, you don't need to attend class because he provides them to you via his webpage in the form of a MS Powerpoint presentation. Harlan will tell you this on the first day. Facts are good, and he'll want to know what you learned about them, but the key word is "learn". Although they're important, what he really wants is for you to develop an attitude that is supported by these "facts". Also, you'll have to read ~5 short novels which are based upon certain eras. The last one is ~500 pages long, but that's not too bad if you get started early. Don't do what I did and read the last novel two days before the quiz. Overall, I rate him as a good professor.
