Carpenter probably is passed his prime...but he does not deserve a 0.22 polyrating. He really loves teaching and is a nice guy. His tests are easy and the workload wasn't too bad.

My one word of advice for Carpenter: Retirement. My one word of advice for you: Pray! "Lock it up... Bingo!"

Carpenter is probably one of the nicest professors that you can take at Cal Poly, however he can't teach. During the course of the quarter he managed to say things like "I don't like fluids, I'd rather be teaching thermo," and "Well, I could tell you, but I'm not gonna,(he really didn't seem to know the material that well, right after he said this another student explained what Carpenter could not)." His lectures seemed to be mostly derivations pulled directly out of the book. If you have to take him get a good study group and be prepared to do a lot of learning on your own.

Do not expect to walk away from this class with even a basic grasp of what the course is supposed to leave you with. If you have to take this professor, bring the book with you to class. Follow along in it, as he lectures right out of the book. Dont bother taking notes. Review the homeworks for the tests. PAC 4 Life.

This guy must be the worst of the worst. His lecture is boring and going sloowww, basically deriving the formulas. We can even read this out of the book and save time. His lecture doesn't help you doing your homework;and the weird thing is you have to do your homework before he goes over that material. What method of teaching is that? Again, the worst of the worst.

I would try to add to the other comments made previously, but they are already so accurate that it wouldn't be possible! Avoid Carpenter if you possibly can! Wait, avoid him period!

Take anyone else but Carpenter. The guy doesn't have a clue how to convey the material to the class or recognize student difficulties. Anytime someone asked a question, he listened, paused, then responded with "I don't want to go there right now, let's go back over here" and then he would start to ramble on about internal combustion engines when the question would have nothing to do with them. He's a smart man but a crappy teacher. Take anyone else. Even Gorden.

I havent finished the class yet but someone needs to evaluate this guy. This man is one of the worst teachers here at Cal Poly and definatly the worst in the ME department. He is so scatterbrained, his lectures are just a confused explosion of his thoughts onto the chalk board. I sit and take notes every day in class but I learn nothing so I have to read the book and teach my self, which takes four times as long (makes me wonder why we need teachers sometimes). He goes through examples faster than you can write and if you ask him to slow down he'll tell you the story about how he used to teach in Egypt and he had the power to throw students in jail if they mouthed off. Test averages run about 55-65 percent. He sincerly thinks the students come second to his comfort. I can't believe nobody has rated this guy yet, he's horrible avoid him at all costs even if you have to come back next year or take the EIT late do not take this guy!!!
