IME 335 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 11:37 am, Dec 2, 2012 Report Evaluation |
I have taken a handfull of classes with Dan including 144 241 335 341 352. He is a very good professor- by far the most valuable faculty member to the MFGE students. His classes are by no means a breeze, but it is rare for students to earn below a B as long as they show up. Some student's dislike the "inside out" class structure (working sessions in class, video lectures outside of class) because the videos are boring or hard to watch. I would say that those who do not find the material in Dan's core classes interesting are likely in the wrong major. IME 335, 341, and 352 are the bread and butter of Manufacturing Engineering. The skills and knowledge gained here are what define MFGE's. It's basically arts and crafts, with metal. I can say, without doubt, that I have learned more in Dan's classes earning only B's and C's than any other course I have earned an A in throughout college.

If you're an IE - don't even consider this class. Here's what the class is like: two lectures and a lab. One of those lectures will be a working session that you do an assignment in. The assignment takes the entire class period. Lab is where the class SUCKS. There are only two machines for roughly 20+ students which means you need to schedule time outside of lab to complete. You'll spend TONS of time on pro-e (which is lame as hell) and then get to cut a little (which is legit). Too bad you only get to cut like 5 times over 10 weeks which is the ONLY cool thing about the class. Inside out learning is implemented here. So be prepared to watch a SHIT TON of lecture video that is extremely BORING. Lastly, his in person lectures suck. They drag on for days and he always lectures the full time even if he has to talk about what he is going to tell you online.

Dan the Man! Professor Waldorf was part of the Thailand Study Abroad crew this past spring quarter. He taught engineering economics, statistics, and independent projects to the engineers on the program and did one hell of a job doing it. It isn't easy when you have Thailand being a constant distraction, but he was able to keep everything organized and on schedule for his classes. The econ class was comprised of: 10% hw, 40% midterms (2), 25% final, 25% quarter project. Very fair in his grading and very helping during office hours. His favorite places to hang out: Warm Up and Khao San Road.

IME 314 Junior Grade Earned: A Elective 8:03 pm, Dec 23, 2008 Report Evaluation |
Good teacher. Some of examples in class do really help with the homework. There were some homework problems that were just hard to do and his lecture notes just didn't help. He assigns a lot of homework. The problems can take a while to do as well. MAKE SURE TO DO THE PROBLEMS. If you don't do the problems, you're screwed for his exams. The end of the year project was HORRIBLE(make sure to get a good partner)!!! I felt that the class and homework problems did not prepare me enough for this project. Gladly though, Waldorf is a nice guy and he didn't grade the project harshly.

IME 144 Junior Grade Earned: N/A Required (Major) 3:28 pm, May 4, 2005 Report Evaluation |
IME 144 is supposed to be cake, but Waldorf is SOOO frustrating. This guy inadequately explained how to do labs and then if you asked for help he made you feel like the world's biggest dumbass. He doesn't like repeating anything, does nothing to clarify when a question is asked. In fact, he is bothered, even insulted that we should be asking questions. He immediately labels students as "slackers" or "hard workers" and it's hard to change his stereotype of you. Overall, a very frustrating teacher. You'd be wise to get a hold of old HW, notes, and projects from previous quarters.

Pretty good teacher, easy to get along with and usually pretty helpful. Sometimes he can be a bit spacy, but mostly he's pretty good at helping students and explaining concepts.

IME 352 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 12:34 am, Mar 28, 2004 Report Evaluation |
Dan provides everyone with the material to get an A. If you don't get an A in his class, the only person to blame is yourself. I have been here for 5 yrs and graduating. I think he is an excellent professor. Some of his classes my go a little too in depth, but it only makes you a better problem solver. Take good notes, do the HW, and you'll do fine!

IME 241 Sophomore Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 1:34 pm, Jan 13, 2004 Report Evaluation |
Dan is a good teacher. Notes are clear, homework straight forward and easy (even if boring). Put in some time and the tests shouldn't give you much trouble. One of the better teachers in IME.

IME 251 Junior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 7:39 pm, Sep 28, 2003 Report Evaluation |
material properties are not what all students can easily understand, and this prof. didn't make the effort to see what the students needed, and his midterms were too long and I didn't see the point of buying the book. plus, he shows favoritism for some students which makes the rest feel out of place and intimidated!

IME 341 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 12:16 am, Feb 27, 2003 Report Evaluation |
Dan is a Great teacher who tries to teach his students important information to become a successful engineer. His teaching style is VERY straight forward. He hands everyone an outline of what he is teaching and you write your own notes on it through out his lecture. He tests heavily on the hw and notes, very fair tests, and gives everyone the oppertunity to do well. I have taken him for many classes and would recommend him to anyone! He is a good teacher.

IME 336 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Support) 5:26 pm, May 31, 2002 Report Evaluation |
Dan is a good teacher, although sometimes his lectures can drag on for too long. His tests are hard, and the matrix math was unnecessary and painful, but he is very helpful if you go to his office with questions. pOp!
