Dr. Berner is a VERY knowledgeable woman and it is no surprise that she used to be the Department head. Despite who she is, she has no right to be teaching in a classroom. She WANTS to be a good teacher and prepares her (boringggg) lectures, but she tries to fit WAY too much information into a slide and doesn't know how to properly teach it. She has an "I'm smarter than you" attitude; even though she says she wants you to ask questions, when you do, she will interrupt you and talk about whatever she likes. There is no doubt that she is a passionate person, but her teaching duties should end there. She needs to be more in tune with her students and if you have a hard time with vague teachers, I highly suggest NOT taking any classes with her.

This class was just okay. It got really boring at times and I would wonder how it could possibly get worse, and then it would. Not to discourage anyone, the class was pretty easy. All you have to do for tests is memorize the answers to the study guide. Also you DO NOT have to read the readings. Don't bother buying the reader. Waste of time and money, believe me. You have to do 12 hours of community service at a nursing home, but it ended up being an enriching experience for me. I got an award at the end of the class for my community service.. what grade are we in again???? haha

although i enjoyed the material she taught, she is a dull teacher. i nearly fell asleep the first day of class. she is helpful if you go talk to her about questions you have and she seems pretty knowledgeable, but she will not hold your attention in class.

It's obvious to see why Dr. Berner used to be the head of the department. Not only does she really know her material but presents it in such a way that you have opportunities to share, discuss, and learn it well. The class is a little difficult to engage in because of it's lack of application to many people's personal experiences/exposure. The biggest ordeal is the volunteer work which takes 12 hours (get it done early) and the corresponding paper. This is my second time attempting the class and the first time I thought I was too good for the volunteer work and did the 10 page term paper instead... BIG mistake. It's way more time intensive and it's much easier to get over your personal comforts and hang out with some old people. There's other small assignments which may not seem like much but she bases quiz/test questions off of what you're supposed to learn from them and their points can easily mean the difference between an A/B, so be sure to do them. Tests are mostly fill in the blank/short answer so make sure you know most details and listed items. Finally, READ THE READER, it is more valuable as a text than most others out there.

Some people think shes a hard ass, but I think she's great and really understanding! The only reason I didn't get an A is because I hate old people (ie. Nutrition in Aging)...but I had take this class for my major! Just glad it's done

This is not a great class by any means, but if you have to take it then suck it up and prepare to be board. It takes about 6 weeks or more into the quarter before you really start learning nutrition related information. She will give you study guides for the test. Know these! Sometimes she will use the same exact questions for the exams. Definately know Level 1 and 2 screening (you'll know what I am talking about later). I highly recomend the community service project. You are given an option. You can do the 12 hrs. community service and write a 5 page report or you can do a 12 page research paper. The community service was very enjoyable and gave you practicle experience. The readings are not necessary and I would not buy the reading material. You can get an A without them. Berner is very dry and anything but personable. She will talk down to you and treat you like a child. Your best bet is to look straight ahead and not open your mouth. She can be very rude to students and has a tendency to fly a bit off the handle at times. I didn't feel respected in this class and I think most others would agree. There are several quizes and you get to drop one. There are also "reflections" (mini writing assignments in class). These are very easy. You are told you can drop one, but when it came to the last one she insisted people take it anyway so you pretty much do them all. The final is only slightly cummulative.

This class is fairly easy despite the fact that you will endure 10 weeks of the "elderly". Dr. Berner uses powerpoint in every lecture which can become tedious when studying for her tests. Be careful on midterms; she is extremely nit-picky toward the fill in the blank answers. Other than that she gives 3 out-of-class assignments which are time consuming. The big project of the quarter is a 12 page research paper or 12 hours of community service and a 5 page research paper (you get to choose).

I thought Dr. Berner was a very good teacher. She presented the material very well using powerpoint. She also posts are her slides so you do not need to write as much, and can focus on the material. I thought the class had some very interesting material but it was very hard to sit for 2 hours. The tests were pretty straight forward, just study everything from the notes. She has a lot of short answer questions that I found easier than the multiple choice. There are readings that we are supposed to do, but she covers everything in lecture so they were a waste of money. There is also a volunteer part that I really enjoyed or an option to do a research paper.

Dr. Berner is a great teacher. She is really organized and presents her notes through powerpoint in an interesting way. You can also download the notes off of blackboard. DO THIS!!! It will help you so much. THe class is interesting and if you study and pay attention you will do fine. I recommend taking Dr. Berner.

Dr. Berner was a great teacher. I thought she presented all the information very well. There is no text book for the course which kind of sucked but she makes the class work without one. Whenever she was asked a question in class that she didn't know she would always tell the student that she would find out for them and let them know the next class period. She was also very good at emailing information to students and updating blackboard. I've heard from several people how mean and horrible she is and that she'll try to make you look stupid...I saw none of that. I did visit her outside of class and I thought she was very nice. The majority of her tests are short answer and there is a research paper. Don't procrastinate on the paper!

This class was pretty basic. It just goes over what the nutrition department is about. It was a pretty easy class. Make sure that you show up to class because it is apart of your grade, and do the two assignments. The assignments were easy and simple. You are allowed to not show up one time and still be able to pass the class so choose what day wisely. Overall it is an easy and boring class.

She is a really fair teacher. If you want to learn and you come to class and you turn in your assignments on time it is easy and fun. I really enjoyed this class and Dr. Berner seemed to enjoy teaching us. The assignments were fun and easy. If you came to class and took notes the quizes and tests were not that hard. They are short answer however. I would recommend her for this class.

Dr. Berner seems to have an infamous reputation among Nutrition students as being this terrible and horrible woman. I actually thought she was a very difficult but FAIR teacher. You have to work in her class, but you learn alot. I was impressed with her breadth of knowledge as well as her ability to make the information user friendly with study guides. I never went to office hours, so I cannot coment on that aspect.

Mrs. Berner was very organized. She had everything layed out for her at the touch of a portable mouse button. The problem was that Berner had the ability to put nearly every student, in her class, to sleep, regardless of how tired we were. Everything is on scantron, meaning the 2 midterms, the final, and the 5 quizes. The few homework assignments were the only reason that I ended up with a C+. The homework was easy and the tests were hard. Berner is a frail woman, but don't let that fool you. She is VERY intimidating, no matter what she says. She would belittle every person who asked a question, especially when she didn't know the answer (which was most of the time). Furthermore, when I would go to her during business hours, instead of helping me she would make me feel stupid and like I should just understand everything that she says in class. So, I would NOT recommend her to anyone.
