I have to respond to some of the negative comments regarding Dr. Hsieh. I'll have to assume this is the same Dr. Carl Hsieh who taught in the early 1970's in the ARCE department - well, let me tell you guys a few things - he was the BEST ARCE instructor teaching structural design at Poly and Poly was and still is "the best in the West", we were all privileged to attend his struct. courses, he was the most prepared, the clearest explaining concepts - when you were in his course you had better sit down and buckle up - because we were off to the races -listen and take furious notes and boy, did we learn structural!! I graduated in '76 and still have all his course notes. I've been doing structural since I received my license in '79 and every once in awhile I think back of the fond memories on Poly and thank Dr. Hsieh. | |

The classes were overall, very easy. That is the only positive aspect. In all other aspects, this instructor is an absolute shame to the profession. The grade a student get in his class is meaningless because you practically learn nothing, seriously! Avoid this instructor at all costs. | |

He is a very poor instructor. I didn't go to 3/4 of the class meetings because I learned a lot more by reading the book by myself. Also, he's extremely unhelpful during office hours. On the two occasions I went to see him, his answer to my questions both times was "You should already know that". Then, when I restated my question he said, "Ask your classmates". | |

Dr. Hsieh is the reason why the tenure system should be canned. Talk about someone who needs to be fired. He lives up to his nickname of easy A Hsieh but what a waste of time. If you want to float through a class and not learn a thing Dr. Hsieh is the man. If you want to learn something wait for Kasper or Goel. They are by far more difficult instructors but they will give you your money's worth. | |
