Please do yourself a favor and do not take Shelling. Instead of bashing her like she deserves I will just describe a day in class. She walks in and attempts to do a problem out of the book, cant do it and takes 20 min reading how to do it while the class talks. She gives up, starts another problem and cant do it, and spends the remaining time reading to herself from the book about how to do it. Class ends with her promising to email everyone solutions to the two problems. If you go in and ask her why you got points off on tests not only can she not tell you, but SHE CAN'T DO HER OWN TEST PROBLEMS. same answer, she tells you she will email you solutions. Cal Poly should be ashamed to be represented by this teacher

CHEM 127 Freshman Grade Earned: A Required (Support) 1:41 am, Dec 16, 2009 Report Evaluation |
Dr. Shelling is very nice and VERY quirky. She has a tendency of telling you to read the book and giving you an unclear, confused lecture. I had to study like hell to get an A, and believe me I didn\'t study her notes. I read every single required chapter out of the book and took meticulous notes on them; i also did all of the suggested homework (as none was required). All of her materials were simply cut and paste from Dr. Gragson\'s website, and these were the most useful assets during the class. Simply put, avoid her if possible for lecture. Lab, however, was a different story. She was a great lab professor who, although unclear occasionally, devoted herself to teaching you and letting you ask as many questions as possible. That being said, don\'t leave early from her lab. Stay and pester the hell out of her until you understand what\'s really going on. Three midterms, one take home test, one final, lots of curving/easy bonus questions, no assigned homework. And of course if you have ever met her she has a really funny/quirky laugh, enjoy.
