BUS 489 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 11:00 pm, Apr 8, 2013 Report Evaluation |
Tyson was a lively teacher! I enjoyed him a lot. In this class, which was Negotiation for Managers, we did a lot of negotiation activities in class. The first half of the class was a negotiation activity with an assigned partner, in which we had to prepare before coming to class, and the second half of class consisted of evaluating the activity and light lecture. There were 3 analysis papers, which was not hard at all. Good thing: no midterms or finals!!! Good luck!

BUS 401 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 1:18 pm, Mar 22, 2012 Report Evaluation |
Ty is a fun teacher who really engages his students well in class. There are no tests or quizzes, and no final. The class is purely case based, so be prepared to do a good amount of reading for each class, but whatever you do, DO NOT purchase the required text. You will never open it. Ever. Participation is huge in this class (40%) so be sure to comment at least once every class and make sure you're trying to say something insightful. He recognizes BS comments and does not reward them. As far as the group work goes, just make sure you form a group that you know you can work well with, and pull your weight on the final paper/presentation. Ty is a good choice for 401 overall.

I dreaded this class because I heard it was a lot of work, but the workload isn't bad at all. Make sure you get a good group. Class is enjoyable. Put in a little extra work into the big project, and you'll get an A. Ty's a great guy, and really nice in class. Participation is 40% of the grade, so speak up.

BUS 401 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 11:19 am, Jun 13, 2011 Report Evaluation |
He hands out B's like candy. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get an A on assignments. Group work here is the bread and butter. Use experiences here to talk about in interviews. Expect to spend about 4-8 hours in a group for each homework for a 'B'. I have no idea how many hours is required to achieve 'A' status. He forces you to raise your hand a lot if you want a good participation grade. This results in a lot of people just raising there hands to say anything, even if it's useless and ignorant comments. However he will make fun what they say if they're not intelligent responses.

BUS 401 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 7:43 pm, Mar 22, 2011 Report Evaluation |
Ty is a great guy. Be prepared to participate everyday because participation is 40% of your grade. Also, prepare to spend at least 3 hours figuring out the group case analysis portion of the class. I definitely learned a lot in this class, it seem to be what consulting in the real world is like (Think Porter's 5 forces model and a VRI analysis for competetive advantage). Take Mackey, he's a great guy and the class is worthwhile.

BUS 401 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 5:06 pm, Mar 28, 2010 Report Evaluation |
This class is 60% Tests and 40% Participate. If you read and use his study questions, the 3 tests (2 midterms, 1 final) are EASY. Participation on the other hand is pretty crazy-just make sure you are always prepared (do the reading, take notes, whatever it takes). I am a pretty shy person, so at the beginning of the quarter I was so scared by the 40% participation part. I for sure participated at least once per class, and I got about an 87% on my overall participation grade (I also got As on all the tests-I ended up with an A- in the class). So if you plan on getting a solid A in this class, you need to plan on particpating multiple times per class period (and you lose points if you are absent). Overall, I liked Ty Mackey as a teacher. He definitley isnt intimidating, which makes it a little easier to participate. Good Luck!

If you are looking for an easy A with minimal work, but still plan on learning something, then take this class. He gives 3 tests, 20% each, and 40% is participation. Lectures usually run really short but are very interesting. Class discussions are fun and he often includes activities that parallel the lecture. Absolutely no outside work, you simply need to read about 15 minutes a week so that you can talk about stuff in lecture. Show up most of the time and when you do raise your hand a few times so he knows who you are and you\'ll do fine in participation. The tests are ridiculously easy. Morning before the tests just read the chapters covered and you are guaranteed at least a B, usually an A.

Mackey was a great professor. I really enjoyed his class because he taught us about relevant case studies in business. He also always tried to keep it interesting by bringing in tinker toys for us to play with to teach us the concepts of scarcity or competition. He tends to talk really quickly and stutters quite a bit so he can talk for a few minutes and you realize he's still on the same sentence. But it's ok because it keeps the class lighthearted at least. The only small hassle is that he has case study questions about every week that is group work but it's nothing too time consuming. Use a lot of keywords in your answers and you'll rarely make below a "B" for those assignments. He does tend to grade his tests a little hard but in the more nit-picky sense where it's a small deduction in points here and there. Again use lots of keywords. But overall, I would strongly recommend taking him as I really enjoyed his class.
