ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: A General Ed 6:07 pm, Jun 17, 2013 Report Evaluation |
Fantastic professor and class. Easy A if you: a) take notes of everything that sounds important b) highlight all the passages he goes over c) do all the readings (or if you really can't, just go over sparknotes to prepare for quizzes). That's about it. Good luck, he's hilarious and the class is really fun. PS if you need the reading books I have all SIX of them for sale. Almost all the passages he went/goes over are highlighted, so the book has markings on it. Otherwise they are in good condition. $25 for all six. I'm gone for summer but will be back in Fall. First come first serve. Mail me at: PabloSmithIsntMyName@gmail.com

ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: B General Ed 12:06 pm, Apr 2, 2013 Report Evaluation |
Stegner is a cool guy. I wasn't looking forward to an English class but this class wasn't bad. The material can be dry but there are worse books out there. Really easy class, your grade is two midterms, a final and some pop quizzes. I didn't read any of the books and was able to get a B+ in the class by going to lecture and reading sparknotes/cliffnotes for the quizzes and tests. If you want to get an A I recommend reading all of the books. The tests have plot questions about the readings (fairly easy) and a quote section where you have to match the character with the corresponding quotes. This part can be tough if you don't read the books. But I really recommend this class with Stegner if you want to get through this GE area easily, Stegner is a funny guy and made 8PM class somewhat bearable.

Gotta be one of the easiest classes at cal poly. Stegner is so boss that guy must get major ass on a daily basis. Funniest professor I ever had. The material is incredibly easy. He tells you exactly what you need to know. How to Pass the Class: (1) Do the reading (2) go to lecture (3) bring a highlighter and highlight all the quotes he mentions (4) Make a list of all the terms he writes on the board and their definitions (5) Wonder how people get anything less than an A in this class

ENGL 252 Senior Grade Earned: B General Ed 12:03 am, Jan 30, 2013 Report Evaluation |
Paul was very enthusiastic about the subject, yet he did not attempt to meet the needs of students who found the material boring. He gave WAY to much reading and the exams were difficult. I went to every class, read every book, and even sparknoted the books after reading them and still got a B-! I do not feel that the effort I put into this class paid off. If you are super into reading and lit, take this class. If not, do not take this class with Paul!

ENGL 380 Senior Grade Earned: A General Ed 9:38 am, Dec 10, 2012 Report Evaluation |
This was my second time to take Stegner, and that was definitely purposeful. He is by far one of the best teacher's I've had at Poly. He is SO funny and can make any topic interesting. His classes are generally late at night, but I never notice, and never want to skip class. This particular class was Literary Themes: Shakespearean Film Adaptations (or something like that). We would read through a play at home, then discuss it in class before watching a film clip. Then we would discuss the film clip as well. For "Homework" we had to do 2 response papers where we watched clips he emailed us from different directors, and compared them to each other. Those were super straightforward. I did them the night before or day they were due and got high 90s both times. There was only 1 quiz and it was because some people had been missing a lot of class, but it was only 5 points. I bombed it because I didn't do the reading that week, but it didn't hurt my grade at all. Otherwise, the class is based on a film project you do in a group and the final. The final was very easy, and not tricky at all. I was wary of the film project, but it turned out to be really fun and not too challenging. I highly recommend ANY class with Stegner. He is a hilarious teacher with very easy grading standards. But, at the same time you will still LEARN something!

ENGL 204 Junior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 12:21 pm, Dec 8, 2012 Report Evaluation |
Stegner knows his literature and his philosophy. He can take Milton and explain all the theological errors beautifully. He also has a great sense of humor, beginning most of his similes with "It's like when you're dating..." and proceeds to give a humorous anecdote that helps you remember the class material. He does have high expectations for his students, so pay attention and do not fall behind.

ENGL 381 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: A General Ed 10:19 pm, Aug 16, 2012 Report Evaluation |
Stegner is, without a doubt, the funniest teacher I've ever had. ENGL 381 is a graphic novel class that counts for C4, the GWR, and USCP. The class consists of reading a graphic novel or 2 per day of class (so 2 to 4 per week), which is completely manageable because most of them are easy to get through relatively quickly. There are 2 chances to pass the GWR, one on the second day (which doesn't affect your class grade) and one during the non-cumulative final (which is graded and you have to complete even if you passed the GWR on the first try). The midterm and final both consist of short answer (not even complete sentences) and 2 short essays (500 words each). The final also includes a 500 word GWR essay. As long as you read the material, the tests are pretty easy, and confusion or questions you may have about the material is addressed in class (all of which are seminar style discussion circles). The only other thing required of the class is for you to make a mini-comic, which is graded more on effort and explanation than substance. As long as you read the material and show up, there is no reason you should get below a B in this class, and it is a fantastic alternative to taking a more traditional and much more boring literature class to fulfill your C4. And even if you don't like the material, Stegner's hilarious commentary makes it a class worth taking.

ENGL 252 Senior Grade Earned: A General Ed 10:48 pm, May 30, 2012 Report Evaluation |
Stegner is awesome. Enough said. But if you need more details here it goes. This overall was a fairly simple GE class, although the material was not at all interesting, unless you are into old english that is hard to understand. It was an 8-10PM lecture with over 100 students, and the ONLY class i NEVER missed. Stegner is quite entertaining and funny. He presents the material very clearly, so even if you didn't read or didn't understand what you read, he goes over it well. He gives random reading quizzes that are 5 points each, most you can get by with sparknotes, but if you want to make sure you get the bonus ones correct, make sure to at least attempt the reading. Exams are all multiple choice, pretty self explanatory. If you attend class and pay attention, you should do just fine.

ENGL 252 Sophomore Grade Earned: A General Ed 10:39 pm, May 21, 2012 Report Evaluation |
Stegner is the man. No lie he has me excited to attend and 8-10PM class. Usually its a laughing session where we go over the quotations he will test you on and writes down everything you need to know on the board. Can't go wrong with a lecture that is all scantron for english!

ENGL 252 Sophomore Grade Earned: B General Ed 5:11 pm, Feb 23, 2012 Report Evaluation |
This guy is brilliant. He made me want to come to class from 8-10 PM... I'm sure if I had a different professor my attendance would have dipped significantly. He is fair with students, teaches the material very well, and keeps your attention with his wittiness. If you show up to class and take notes on what he stresses, you will be fine.

ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: A General Ed 9:50 am, Dec 13, 2011 Report Evaluation |
I've been waiting all quarter to rate this professor. He is incredible! One of the best I've had a Poly. His midterms are straightforward and are all multiple choice. His lectures are fun and hilarious and interesting. I actually really ended up enjoying the subject matter, which I didn't think I would. Stegner is so funny and witty and really makes class fly by. Wish I could've recorded his lectures. He also takes tons of people from the waitlist so try and get in his class even if it is full. I was 25th on the waitlist and got in. The final was a little more difficult compared to the midterms so I wasn't prepared enough and a got a C. But it was my fault. Luckily, he drops the lowest quiz and gives you extra credit opportunities so I got an A-. This class is graded solely on quizzes and tests. The quizzes are easy 5 question quizzes over the reading. There is a lot of reading, but you don't necessarily have to do all of it if you come to lecture. GO TO LECTURE! First off, it is fun and hilarious, secondly, all of what he tests comes from lecture.
|

This man is HILARIOUS. Just take him and you won't regret it. The class isn't difficult at all. It's a 1 and a half(usually) laughing session. Stegner is very witty and his lectures are really informative. TAKE HIM. I wish I could take more classes with him

ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: A General Ed 1:45 pm, Dec 4, 2011 Report Evaluation |
This teacher was amazing! I loved going to class even though it was 8-10 at night. He was so funny and I feel like I understood books or writings that I was totally lost on before I went to class. Sometime he will choose random quotes for the test but overall, and with extra credit, the tests aren't too bad if you went to class, did the readings, and looked over everything before the test. Overall amazing, hilarious, class and teacher and I will take him again in a second.

ENGL 204 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 12:31 am, Mar 24, 2011 Report Evaluation |
I am a little torn on what to say here. I like Dr. Stegner a lot. He is witty and comical in class, yet portrays a somewhat dark sense of humor. In his office hours, he is upbeat, positive, and very helpful. Both personalities have their charm. However, I didn't like the organization (or lack thereof) of the class. We sat in a circle and discussed the reading, but he often flipped from one chapter to the next, then back again, then would get off topic for a while, then would flip back to one of the previous chapters - are you confused yet? I know I am. This made it really hard to take good notes, which then made it hard to study and know what would be on the test. He says it "builds character." He has very high expectations. The class consists of a lot of work - pop quizzes, extensive difficult reading, 2 short response papers, a 4-5 page research paper, a mid term, a project, and a cumulative final. He didn't tell us the final was cumulative until a couple weeks before which sucked. Then, about a week before the final he also handed out a list of 30-something literary terms to memorize and define before the final. Why he didn't hand these out and go over them throughout the quarter, I don't know. Then, the final only had a few of the terms and very few cumulative questions. So, I studied EVERYTHING (which was a TON of info) for almost no reason, rather than just focusing on the current material. I think he might have just been having an off quarter cause he seemed a little disorganized. It seemed like he forgot we have other classes and piled on a ton of work right at the end. I'd still take him again though. I just wasn't interested in this CORE class which made it a lot harder to get through.
|
ENGL 204 Sophomore Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 6:10 pm, Mar 22, 2011 Report Evaluation |
Prof. Stegner has a morbid sense of humor, and frequently gets off topic in his classes. He doesn't ever seem to have a lesson plan, just asks if anyone has any questions. Therefore, you are not sure what will be on the exams. He gives random quizzes, and there is so few points in the class you need to always be on top of the reading so you can do well on them. Also, 70% of the grade comes in the last 2 weeks, a research paper, early modern text project, and the final exam. When taking notes in class, write down EVERYTHING because he takes random little stuff and puts it on the tests. Overall, he is entertaining, but does not prepare you for the tests or the next CORE class.

Dustin Stegner was an amazing professor!! He is soo nerdy funny!! This was the first english type class where I actually WANTED to read the material. He knows how to get your attention and keep it throughout the entire 2 hours. Even though the class was late from 8-10 I still went to every class just because I actually wanted to. If you can TAKE HIM!! He's AWESOME

ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: B General Ed 11:56 am, Nov 13, 2010 Report Evaluation |
Haha, Dr. Stegner. What a beast. ENGL 252 with Stegner is a good class to take if you hate English and you know that you\'re going to put less than 3 hours of work per week into. No writing whatsoever, if you take the right section (look for the section with 100+ seats). 2 easy midterms that are all multiple choice (quote ID from the books and \"objective questions\"). No reading necessary for the midterms: all the quotes and objectives are gone over in class, so if you come to class and listen you don\'t have to read anything. Pop quizzes, also multiple choice, can screw you however since they are on readings assigned before the class period that goes over that reading. I seriously did not study a single minute for the 2nd midterm and I got a B. No, I\'m not smart at all. That\'s how easy it is. Final: more of the same. Stegner himself: at least 3 times a class he will go off on some hilarious tangent that will make you want to come to class just to hear what funny s@*t he will say. HIGHLY recommended.

Core 2 was a lot of fun. Stegner is funny and makes the class interesting. There are very few quizzes, though, and they are VERY hard. He does not offer very many points, so make sure to take each assignment seriously and get all the participation points you can. You will have fun in his class, though.

ENGL 205 Sophomore Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 2:50 pm, Mar 17, 2010 Report Evaluation |
This class was a pleasure to show up to. The work load isn\'t too bad, just a lot of reading, a text project (that I did in 2 days), a 4-5 page paper, one midterm and a final. It really helps if you get together and study with a couple people from class before the tests. Stegner\'s funny, though a bit dismal sometimes. A worthwhile class. :)

Great professor! I thought I would be annoyed with his sense of humor at first, but he definitely grew on me and I would take classes from him again in the future. He really cares about students, gets to know you if you make an effort, and takes the time to answer any questions or concerns you have with his grading. Yes, he's hard and assigns a lot of reading, but I feel like I learned a lot from him and he made the work worth it.
|
ENGL 252 Junior Grade Earned: A General Ed 6:20 pm, Aug 29, 2009 Report Evaluation |
he is nerdy and cute and entertaining. he'll quiz you on these random, obscure facts sometimes. make sure you take good notes and try to read some of the books (even though they are incredibly boring) because the tests have direct quotations from the material that you need to identify. but he made the class as fun as it could be. and he is just adorable. take him.

VERY entertaining class - made this class the best it could have been, I never would have thought I could actually enjoy an english class. Be ready to work hard though!!! Going to class and taking good notes is a must, but going really isn't that bad because class is again, very entertaining. You have a midterm, a comprehensive final and reading quizzes. Again, be ready to put some time into the class but overall a GREAT teacher.

ENGL 354 Junior Grade Earned: B General Ed 11:20 am, Mar 2, 2009 Report Evaluation |
I took this class last spring and this guy is incredible. Bible lit was one of my favorite classes due to Dustin always bringing a relaxed attitude. I went to his office for help for the papers and it really paid off. The 1st paper he made due the 3rd day of the quarter I didn't even get half done, but he gave me a D, which let me know he really cared. The final was fair especially with his helpful review the last day. Lots of reading in this class, beware for non-majors!

Top three favorite professors of all time. He is great with the material, is really witty and lectures are entertaining. I thought he was kind of a tough grader, but I think that can be good, especially for English majors/minors like myself who get treated like our writing is the greatest thing ever simply because it is grammatically correct. You have to go to class and if you zone out he will call on you...take it from me, so don't do it.

Stegner is funny, but I didn't really like his class because it seemed like he wanted to be freinds with us instead of teaching us. Half the time we didnt even talk about what we read, instead we talkd about bullshit. I didn't feel ready for the next core class.
|
ENGL 204 Junior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 3:48 pm, Aug 5, 2008 Report Evaluation |
He's Hilarious. Dr. Stegner is one of those teachers that actually engages students and manages to get the shy ones (like me) to actually speak up and contribute to class because he doesn't judge your comments and questions. Tests and grading are fair. If you have the option to take a class with him, do.

This guy is hilarious. I was bummed that I had to take an English class for my last G.E at Cal Poly, but Stegner made it worth while. He made early british literature interesting and our class discussions were always entertaining. If you're a fan of soda and ninja films, then this is the class for you. If you're not a fan, take the class anyway. As far as grades and assignments, I thought he was extremely fair and the 2 essays we had to write were not bad either.

"Challenging, but fair." ;) Stegner has branded the phrase, "Negatory, Red Rider" in my head for all eternity, and I mean that in a very good way. Wonderful teacher--animated, witty, relaxed--and a great guy (evidenced by his model-hot wife). He taught us well without sacrificing the fun, and we went on a class date to see 'Othello.' In addition, he allowed my goofball engineering friend to attend class. I hope to have Stegner again some day..after taking his class last quarter, this quarter was a HUGE letdown.

Stegner was amazing, easily one of the best teachers that I've had at Cal Poly. If I ever need to take another english class, I will defitely try to get Stegner!

Wow, I almost feel silly adding to this love-fest, but it cannot be denied, Stegner is an amazing professor. I loved going to class. I'm just sad the class is over, devastated really. It's not just that Stegner is hilarious (I laughed til I cried) and easy to get along with, it's that he is a very good teacher, he engages you with the work, makes you want to come to class and do the reading not because you're going to be tested on the material or you want a good grade, but because you're actually excited about what you're learning and you're excited to participate in the class discussion. It just makes learning so much easier because its not a chore its a pleasure. If you want your mind to be blown, take a class with Stegner. I learned so much and I loved it. Partings are such sweet sorrows.

ENGL 331 Junior Grade Earned: A General Ed 4:25 pm, Mar 18, 2008 Report Evaluation |
Dustin/Paul "Dr.Master" Stegner is a great teacher and deserves A's on his evaluations. His icebreakers last for a good half of the class, and are awesome. He likes Duke's basketball team and long walks on the beach, and you may be tested on this information. He prefers Coke over Pepsi and the occasional guava juice. You might want to consider getting some anti-depressants because class discussions tend to revolve around death, revenge, and the general decay of mankind. He is a veritable encyclopedia of pop culture knowledge (from the 90's mostly) which he uses to try to connect with "kids these days". He really likes Anthony Hopkins, and not Julia Styles. Grading is "fair but challenging", and if you don't mind reading you won't have any problems with the homework load. In conclusions, goodnight sweet prince. (chili peppers)

I loooove him! super sweet, funny, cute, and just an all around interesting guy! he makes me giggle, especially when he says stupid things like "negative red-rider". and he likes star wars and dungeons and dragons. hes silly. Hes a good teacher, so just listen a lot and write stuff down and reeeead. the exams are a smidge difficult, but not really. I didn't study for the midterm and got a C and studied for the final and got an A. bottom line=study. but if u dont want to, im sure you would probably pass just by showing up. hes getting married in a week so congratulate him!

If you've ever read Shakespeare, only to be disappointed, let him be redeemed by taking this class!!!! Dr. Stegner is-by far-the sickest, wittiest, greatest teacher in the English Department...No...In all of Cal Poly!!!! P.s. and just for a little icing on the cake...Girls-he's TOO cute!!!!
