He is very picky about some things on his tests (i.e. you have to draw a picture for every problem) but if you pay attention to these things, and you understand all the homework problems (which he posts solutions for), you'll be fine. Whatever you've heard about him here, his lectures are clear, and he readily answers questions in class and during office hours (even dumb ones). I wouldn't jump to take him again but compared to some of the other physics professors here he's pretty solid.

Wasn't excited about the quarter having read the Polyratings for this guy. He wasn't the devil like some people here would have, but he's definitely not the guy that's going to inspire you to be a physicist. Yeah, you're gonna need to teach yourself about half of the material, but you've gotta think like a test-taker, not a student. He pulls his quiz and test material from the topics covered in his homework, so do the homework. There's easy ways to get the solution manual for the physics book, so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to figure it out. Understand how they do it, not why they do it. Pass the class. Don't be a physics major.

When he actually taught he was ok. Teaching for him though was going over two sections of a chapter covering and covering the most basic concepts. The rest you had to teach yourself. Physics 132 is not a very difficult class, but it is harder when you have to teach it to yourself. He is very anal about how you answer free response questions on tests and quizzes too, taking points off for things that do not even represent your understanding of the material or affect the answer. I found the subject pretty painful and the fact that I had to teach most of it to myself made it worse. Fleishon is a nice guy, but his teaching philosophy is not very effective.

On the first day, the first thing he had to say to us was "My job is not to teach you" (it was also in his syllabus) he is a very nice teacher (he let me withdraw from the class no questions asked) and is easy to talk to, but that doesn't change the fact that he cannot/doesn't feel the need to teach... He gives a chapters worth of homework on monday that is due by midnight sunday, but the real problem is that he doesn't even begin to cover the first section until the last class of the week and then finishes 'teaching' the next week after the assignment was already due. There are also reading and homework quiz's each week. He is just not a good teacher, AT ALL.

Fleishon clearly stated that it was not his job to teach, and he did follow through on that statement. You are expected to read the book and comprehend the material on your own. In his lectures he quizzes you on the assigned reading and has a weekly math test on the assigned homework problems. It is hard not to pass this class because he grades on a 15% scale meaning an A is 85-100%, a B is 70-85% and so on... But in order to do well, you have to spend countless hours teaching yourself the material.

Honestly, the bad reviews are totally right. First day of class he LITERALLY said "My job isn't to teach you anything". ??????????? Unless you remember everything from highschool physics like the back of your hand, don't expect to get a good grade by doing the homework and showing up to lecture. His lectures are 100% useless and vague, he makes you do iclicker quizzes at the beginning of EVERY SINGLE CLASS which count for your grade, homework quiz every wednesday, and never lets you make any of it up. He does it to make sure you show up, because he gives you a break at the end of the first hour during which 95% of the class leaves knowing that the next hour is only a waste of time. avoid this class at all costs. seriously.

Oh Dr. Fleishon What can I say... Dr. Fleishon has the best job ever. Everyone is scared of him so they don't go to office hours to bug him, Nobody talks in class because he will make fun of you, and no one dares to question him or his teaching methods because he will make you look like a total ignorant asshole. I think he has a calendar set on his phone that tells him where to go everyday and when he gets there, he asks what we did yesterday(no matter if we even had class yesterday) and if there are any questions about what we did yesterday. At the end of class he says, have a nice weekend, even if it's tuesday and we meet thursdays... The tests are pretty much impossibly hard now that it is open notes, and average is probably going to be around 30. Don't worry, we are all competing against eachother. Third place gets a B+ and second place gets an A-, unless you have over a 93%, but you would be cheating if you got that. Even Dr. Fleishon "wouldn't do that well on his own test". Yep, that's Dr. Fleishon Destroying my gpa one class at a time..

The first thing Neil told my class is that it was not his job to teach, it was the book\'s job. Unfortunately, he meant it. His lectures are BASIC overviews that do not serve you well whatsoever. That being said, everything graded (tests and quizes) can be found word for word in the text book. just do the reading and HW that he assigns and getting a B in the class is not too hard at all.

Pretty boring, kinda an odd guy, but overall he really knows his stuff and you will learn something in his class. His midterms were pretty hard and his final was ridiculous, but the great thing about his class is that he has a set curve, so 55% is a C, 70% is a B, 85% is an A. Easy class to pass. Yes, he may not be a great professor, and he keeps you the ENTIRE time in lab with no exception, but he presents the information clearly. He gives reading quizzes every day and a homework quiz once a week, but they are pretty easy and force you to learn the material. Don\'t take him if you have better options, but it\'s not such a bad thing if you get stuck with him.

Fleishon was an odd guy, but he knew what he was talking about. The biggest problem was that he was very picky about making sure that we drew pictures and symbols and really didn\'t care if we got the right answer most of the time. Once you figure out what he\'s looking for, it\'s almost impossible to NOT get partial credit for every problem. He gave a short reading quiz each lecture and an additional homework quiz once a week. Bottom line, if you\'re a visual person who likes drawing- take him. If you only care about crunching numbers- don\'t!

BUT if you try your best on an exam, he'll stare at you with his lazy eye and defend his notion that you must have had prior knowledge of the exam from someone in another section, and staunchly defend his theory. Just don't take him. If you have to, then maybe you should consider that God's punishing you for something.

A student goes into this guys office to withdraw from a class after the drop date (for family reasons), and Fleishon forces him to write "I have to drop because I'm not good enough" on the slip. Another; Fleishon falls asleep (snores) during a grad student's thesis defense (Fleishon is one of a panel of three). Another; Fleishon pokes fun (in class, in front of the class, while lecturing) of other teachers. Another; Fleishon decides to give a 2 hour exit-exam to a grad student instead of the regulated 1-hour one (and tells no one, not even the student), and the student doesn't graduate. Fleishon is miserable and lives to make sure that everyone around him is as unhappy or more so than he is. He tries to pass his laziness and apathy off as "tough-love" but the disguise is so flimsy you wonder why he even bothers. Why not just show your true colors and be an asshole outright? Come on Neil, own your shit, be the Dr. Dickhead that you know you can be if you REALLY try, at least then you'd be good at something instead of a broken-down old jagoff.

Neil Fleishon is one of the best teachers I ever had. He was always very helpful during his office hours and he gives good advise about how to study for the test. His tests are not easy but if you follow his advice (do the homework by your self, do not copy it, do the problems on the book) you will be okay. I really recomend him. Thank you Neil Fleishon I really learned and enjoyed your class.

This teacher was by far the worst teacher I have ever had my entire life. He tells the class that there is no right answer to one of his questions. When a student answers the question, he gets irritated because that wasn't the answer he wanted so he threatens to throw the student's quiz away. This guy hates questions and takes our questions as a challenge to his "teacher authority." Whatever you do, don't take this teacher. And if you have to, my apologies to you and good luck to the worst 10 weeks of your Cal Poly life.

I don't know if at any point he was a good professor, but he certianly is not now. For some bizzare reason I have taken him for 2 classes. 141 and 132. I can honestly say that between the two classes the only thing that I have learned from him is how to fall asleep with my eyes open. Most of the time he doesn't even know how to solve his own test questions, so if you make it look like you know what you are doing you'll get credit. Be prepared for some of the worst written tests known to man, complete with grammatical errors, missing parameters, and incorrect symbols, and missing information. If you want an A in a physics class, take him for 141 or something and just study for a couple hours before each test. If you want to feel like a retard in 132 take him for 141. If you like taking tuesday thursday classes and being let out 15 minutes early everytime, take his class. If you want to learn physics, I would probably not take him (and by probably I mean never).

Fleishon appeared to be a good professor the first week of class. I understood what he was talking about (even if it was just adding vectors) Then we moved on. He would spend the entire class period arguing with students as to why he was right and they were wrong, when the entire class KNEW he was wrong. He may know advanced physics information but has no concept of ANYTHING else, He straight up told me that factoring out a variable was incorrect algebra and changed the equation. Thanks I have known how to factor since 5th grade. He would promise that the newest section wouldn't be on the midterm, then 1 of the 4 problems (25%) was from the section he specifically said wouldn't be on there. And he is NEVER wrong, he will waste the entire lecture proving that, and wasting time instead of teaching us what we need to know. Most physics classes spent a few days at least on rigid bodies, we spent 15 minutes, on one example and guidelines then took a quiz on it... He assigns homework before he lectures on it and then grades it for correctness. He called people in class dumb, or told them they would understand if they paid attn. By far the worst teacher i have had at Poly. Not only is he a bad professor he is an arrogant asshole as well.

He tries to overcompensate for his lack of manhood and take it out on Cal Poly students because he knows that we will have more success in our lives than he will ever reach. I knew nothing about physics early on in the class but i did learn a ton from many hours of failed attempts of doing homework that wasn't worth my time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It is a living hell and you'll regret it. I spent over 20 hours each week trying to complete each hw assignment properly. It really sucked to waste that much time on such a small part of my grade. I don't know why some people bash him, because this guy actually teaches. You will definitely learn each lecture (if you go!) and his demonstrations go well with what he's talking about, so you get a visual presentation of what's going on. He is also helpful in office hours and he knows how to explain things to students. He has a set curve (85 to get an A, 70 to get a B and so on) and his tests are fair.   Neil Fleishon was a solid lab instructor...but I can't really be too enthusiastic about him because it was the little stuff that pissed me off. He uses every possible second of recesitation, meaning 2 hours in Neil time. When someone asks a question about a homework problem, he'll go through it and then go off for 30 mins about how important conversions and sig figs. Yeah, it may be okay for the first couple labs but not 5 or 6 weeks deep into the quarter. Worse, if no one has a question about homework...he'll make the class work through a problem he makes up in his head just for the hell of it. I like him because he's very consistent at explaining things, but hate him because he talks forever is so anal about the way people do his labs. On the bright side, he makes it clear that it's almost impossible to get an S- unless you don't show up, so you're guaranteed an S grade. An S+ is more difficult if you don't catch on to what he wants in a lab report right away. Overall...he's a good lab instructor to take if you don't mind following stringent guidelines for lab reports and can stand him talking for 2 hours.

As a lab instructor, he seems to be able to talk non-stop for 2.5 hours straight. Not that there's anything wrong with recitation, mind you, but for that long? And plus, it was at 8 in the morning on a Friday too, so I pretty much wanted to go to sleep, and on top of that, it was pretty much useless since my lecture was a Tuesday-Thursday class and we had already covered everything for the week. On the other hand though, he rarely follows the format of the lab manual, which is a good thing and allows us to do the experiment in 30 minutes, however, he seems pretty anal-retentive on small things such as sig figs. Other than that, he's a pretty alright instructor, and it's pretty hard to get an S- from him. I probably wouldn't survive in his lecture class seeing as he wants everything to be perfect. And oh yeah, the way he writes his capital As is funny.

I bear Fleishon no ill will...the guy obviously knows his Physics and clearly is willing, if not necessarily able, to convey it. I say unable because he will make simple textbook problems confusing as hell, and gloss over the more difficult ones. It's true, I had him for 131 Lab, and he was not very effective in that (now defunct) capacity. We never once got out before the three hours were up, he loves to talk and that often meant rushing through (admittedly meaningless) experiments. The first hour consists of a problem or two which are suggested or randomly picked from the book or online problems. The second hour involved an excruciating foray into the minutiae of whatever godforsaken task we had to do. Then the weekly lecture on significant figures and report form, which lasts 15-30 minutes. At last, 30 minutes of not having to feel my spinal column fuse together. Do yourself a favor. If Fleishon is taking a lab section, take it with somebody else, if you can. You will not come out with even a modicum of Physics knowledge, only a keen pain in the backside and a headache, and maybe a big red spot on your forehead from sleeping on the desk. Highly disrecommended.

Homework counts A LOT so you have to do that. The midterms are straight forward, but the final was long and had tricky questions.

I'm a physics major and even though my grade didn't necessarily reflect my knowledge I thought Dr. Fleishon really knew his stuff. I mean c'mon he received a B.S. at M.I.T. and a doctorate at Berkeley. He knew Physics inside and out. He gave about 5-7 quizzes based on the homework, but his tests seem to drift off into realms of Physics we hadn't covered. His final was however, redeeming. If you can take the time to really read over the book and understand the process of equation solving thoroughly you'll do great, but don't be turned away becuase of hard work, you can learn alot form this guy. I wish I had put more effort into the class and maybe that would have shown up in the end.

I think that this profesor was one of the more challenging profesors in the department and that he does get across the material. I also believe that he is a very strict profesor and felt that his test were pretty straight forwaord, except the final because that was kind of a surprise.
