Amazing teacher - smart. I loved this class and I still use the stuff I learned in 134. I don't know what some of these people are whining about; Bartley was the best teacher I took as a freshman. If you want to learn a lot, take her. Also, when you read these reviews, consider how angry or ignorant the person sounds. It damages their credibility. (I learned that from Mrs Bartley!)

Don't understand this instructors goal for teaching? I thought she was a total bitch, acted like it outside class. She is so into herself, she thinks she is so perfect but what does that have to do with an education, not a thing. Cal Poly is not cheap anymore but to spend your hard earned money for silly courses like this and deal with this instructors hursh attitude. Total nonsense.

Be one of her favorites or else she will grade you bad. But be careful not too look too rich or too poor because you will automatically be put in a box and will be hard to climb back out of it even when you do your homework, speak up in class, and come to every class. This women has a different agenda than just being a teacher, I don't know what it is. But please take this class from a different instructor so that you can have a consistent learning environment not based on superficial judgements made by a crazy lady.

Mrs. Bartley had her ups and downs. At times I would love her sarcasm and humor, but occasionally she would take it too far and insult her students. She obviously is an extremely brilliant woman, and I look up to her in many ways, but I felt like she belittled students who weren't on her good side, and she often disregaurded other's opinions. I would definatley take her class again because she's different, and interesting, but if you aren't able to take a few blows to your ego than I would find another professor.

Engl. 134 with Prof. Bartley was my favorite class so far. It is probably one of the more demanding teachers for this course, but with time and effort you will grow as a writer. K. Bartley comes across intimidating and intense at times, but only because she is genuinely interested in the material and tries to motivate her students to participate in the class. Her grading is fair, she lets you revise essays, and she is very helpful in office hours. If you like in-class discussions, want to grow as a writer and are not scared to speak and support your opinion, this is the teacher to take Engl 134 with.

If you’re looking for a stressful adventure, I wouldn't recommend this instructor. There are good days and really bad days with this instructor. I certainty won’t make any recommendation to take this class, it is like going to boot camp and the instructor is the drill sergeant, making every unfair tactic to make you feel bad and drop out. If you want this, go ahead but not worth it to me.

This teacher is as another student mentioned it, a down right bitch. This Kymba Bartley teacher loves herself, she thinks she is the english department and all eyes need to be on her, not anybody else. I dropped the course simply because this instructor was aweful. I did not come to Poly to take a teacher who thinks the world of herself. The english department should fire this woman, I don't know how she came here or got hired but somebody wasn't thinking at all.

I just read all of these reviews. Honestly, some of these people must have been in a different class than me. I loved Bartley's class. We had a great time and I learned a lot. I don't think this teacher is self absorbed or on meds at all. She explained audience to us and told us a bit about herself. End of story. As far as the angry reviews go, disregard them. This teacher is great.

Prof. Bartley is great in the way that she gets you to really think and examine a topic before jumping to conclusions. She loves to challenge the norm and does so in ways that more conservative student might not appreciate. I am an engineering major yet this was my favorite course this quarter, I definately recommend Prof. Bartley to anyone who is interested in an uncommon version of a common course.

I am writing this over a year and a half after having taken Miss Bartley's class, and I still get upset when thinking about the things she would say to me. The moment I walked in the class, she judged me based on my purse. From that day on, she would refer to me as the girl with the Coach purse... I guess I dont deserve a name. Then, I still cannot believe this, she got in my face in front of the whole class and questioned me about my parents financial status. It is the epitome of trash to talk about money like that, so I proceeded to be quiet and she got even more in my face basically shouting... ARE YOU RICH? ...WOW... never have i felt so awkward and weird about going to a class. I have too much class to say some of the things I want to say about her on this, but if you don't want to be judged by what you wear or how much money you have, don't take this teacher!!!

Bartley was the first english professor I had at Cal Poly and after taking a class with her I was ready to drop out of school! She plays favorites like no other and is the most insanely self-obsessed person I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. She takes pleasure in humiliating and belittling her students in class and is only too willing to let you know you will never succeed. If you think I'm exaggerating about how she is so in love with herself, I'm not. Everything is about her... or her son, or her trips, or her dates, or her hair... You never know what to expect or how she'll treat you. And if you make the mistake of taking her class and get the assignment to write about her, you had better be ready to do some serious brown nosing! You are expected to gush about how she's had such a hard life growing up in south Boston, her mom died, she worked in a factory, she had a baby, and on and on it goes (otherwise you'll get an F on the paper). She is constantly letting you know how educated she is and how she's a woman of the world yet she cannot even use a comma correctly. She is ridiculously unproffesional and if she is an example of the education that we receive at Cal Poly, I highly recommend transferring! Don't be tempted to take her class just because someone claims it's easy, trust me it is more difficult than you expect and definately not worth the painful blows to your self-confidence and having to listen to "the world according to kymba bartley." And if anyone has the answer as to why such an inappropriate, viscious woman who couldn't teach a class to save her life is still teaching at this school, I'd like to hear it.

I really don't agree, anyone who uses the terms or comments: that's cool, I can dig it, yeah man.. was not trained how to talk or teach. This instructors past before college isn't something I want to know about, many people would talk about her past but whatever it was, it doesn't match to college material. The class was nonsense, I just did not get her instruction and the grades, hearing her say, yeah man its cool or dude. What is that? Then hearing the song, "dude looks like a lady" as some students would sing silently in the classroom made me think this was our teacher. I did not like the vibe of the class and the grade was not what I expected too or way lower than what I thought I was going to get. As much as I discussed during our lecture in class about reading materials, the times I talked about our materials she gave no attention to me. In my view, she deserves an F letter grade.

My father died in the middle of the quarter (spring) and I don't think I would have made it here at CP without Mrs Bartley. Some of these bitter responses by angry people are surprising. Mrs Bartley was cool to me. I liked her class and I can honestly say I write better now. Seriously, all you haters need to back up. This woman IS cool. My suggestion is to revise your essays, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, and come to class - pretty easy stuff for most CP students. Good teacher - take her.

I agree with others, she needs to take medication (maybe she already does). This is not a stable professor or class. She is extremely judgemental (depending on which personality shows up to teach that morning). Yeah she is funny, but it is obvious to me and others that it is a front/lies to make herself "cool" and "young". I am glad I got an A, cause I am good at flying under the radar. But do no take this class from her, please take if from another professor. I think the Dean of English will get smart soon, once they sit in on a few classes and evaulate her effectiveness in teaching, cause it is not there, it just turns into a "social" class to make her look cool.

ENGL 134 Freshman Grade Earned: A General Ed 2:35 pm, May 15, 2008 |
i can honestly say i have never hated anyone until i met miss bartley. if you want an easy A and can hold your tongue, by all means take her. Easiest class i have ever taken. if you are sensitive or opinionated, don't take her class. she makes you participate and asks for your opinion, then spends the rest of the time making fun of you and telling you why you are wrong. she actually told me "you don't know what the real world is. Your father is a doctor and you have been handed everything since you were a little kid." bitch. little does she know my father has been absent in my life since i was 5. i didn't feel the need to tell her. she also told me she had talked to the admin to get me changed out of her class. I called her out on it and went to the admin myself and they said none of this was true, and that she was trying to get me to drop. she almost got fired. also, she answers her phone during class and tries to make you feel sorry for her because she got knocked up and was orphaned at the age of 16. everyone has hard lives. get over yourself. yeah it's great, but quit being a pompous bitch. also, she failed me on a paper because i said people with higher degrees are more prone to drug use. which is a valid fact, with a source. she found it "personally offensive" really she just didn't like me. also, don't miss her class. i missed one class, one class halfway through she said i could leave because she could tell i wasn't feeling well, then she dropped my grade from an A to an A-. but if you aren't stubborn and opinionated like me, then go, agree with everything and she will love you. she is amazing at picking favorites. become one. you won't have to do anything. oh. and she doesn't teach. you just sit and talk about her opinions the entire class. she gave two lectures the entire quarter. the world would be a better place if she wasn't in it.

I wasn't impressed with Mrs Bartley, I didn't like the class and I didn't like her teaching style. I think she was rude to people and her teaching skills were not as close to some other english classes I have taken before. The grade I got sucked as much as I tried, it didn't matter just a waste of time. Taking the class allover again now just to get a better grade where I should of dropped out or changed instructors, I was stupid to stay in her class as I hated it.

ENGL 145 Sophomore Grade Earned: A General Ed 7:53 am, May 2, 2008 |
I had Bartley for 134 and 145. Yeah, she's tough at first, but that's just because some kids start off slacking. Right away you know you can't pull that shit in Bartley's class. Her classes are symposiums where everyone has to participate. This pissed a few kids off, but I liked it. I finally found n English class where I could say what I thought, even if it disagreed with the teacher. We studied everything from the semi-colon and topic sentences to Aritotle and the logical fallacies. This teacher knows her shit when it comes to logic and she is HILARIOUS. I had the class at 8 AM and I never missed a class because we had a blast. Bartley is a bad ass - she's a tri-athlete and a single-mom. She grew up in South Boston and she loves teaching, so don't take her class if you want an easy A. If you really want to grow as a writer and a person, take her. Hhe is by far the most real-world instructor I've had at CP.

Miss bartley is one of the coolest professors i've ever met. her class was by far one of the most interesting I've ever had at Cal Poly. We talked about all kinds of topics and she let everyone have their own opinion - unlike other teachers who you need to agree with to get a good grade. I learned how to write in that class. she even met me at a coffee shop and helped me revise my essay. I would say the best part of bartley's class is, i think more now, and i think differently than i did before i took the class.

I didn't think this instructor had the right education to teach or the proper training how to respect students. She was not very friendly toward me nor was she with some other students I've noticed. I found her attitude insulting to some people but to some other particular students, she was especially nice. No reason between them or us, just selective or by color of authority who she likes. I don’t know what medication she is on but she needs an evaluation by the department dean or higher or have her find another career.

I disagree with anyone who says they didn't like this teacher. I'm only a first year, but she has, up to now, been my favorite teacher here at poly, and her class was my favorite. She's super chill, she's really nice, offers even to hang out with you at Starbucks and help you with your papers if you need it. She is really easy to talk to, she's sarcastic (in a good way), and she is just basically awesome. I highly recommend her to anyone. I also really improved my writing ability.

Ms. Bartley is awesome, the first day she comes in and scares her students by telling them this is the hardest class they will take. This class was not easy, I had to work very hard however I did grow as a writer. Ms. Bartley truly cares about her students and is always there for help. She has an open revision policy for essays, so you can revise until you get an A. She has a midterm, but she gives a study guide and she is now starting a speech for your final. You work hard for 8 weeks and then she gives you the last week off. Amazing teacher and person, I loved the class, for sure take her!

ENGL 134 Freshman Grade Earned: B General Ed 11:23 pm, Mar 22, 2008 |
Bartley is scary at first but when you get to know her she's pretty cool. You can re write your essays as many times as you want to get an A except for the last one that's worth the most. She coaxed our class into changing the last assignment from writer's history to a presentation on a visual rhetoric. she said she would grade easy and that it was a better choice because she was just trying it out on us. She gave me a D. So now I'm a bit bitter towards her but before that I liked her a lot. Good teacher, get on her good side.

Well, she was a total bitch the first few weeks and made me walk away from class every morning feeling like shit. In the end though, she has been the best teacher I've had at Cal Poly and I learned a lot more in that class (took it over a year ago) that's applicable to my life than engineering. She has an interesting life story you should ask her about. Never went to office hours, felt too intimidating. You have to challenge yourself to participate in her class. It's not like other classes in this regard.

ENGL 134 Freshman Grade Earned: A General Ed 5:43 pm, Feb 25, 2008 |
Ms. Bartley is an excellent teacher, albeit mildly crazy and somewhat intense at times. The trick to doing well in this class is making sure you talk and participate in class discussions - the more you talk/show her that you're making an effort, the nicer she will be to your class as a whole. I think she does have her favorites, and she'll definitely put you on the spot if you don't do your homework or you try to bs her, but as long as you don't completely bomb the final paper, you will probably get an A in the class - at least everyone i've talked to did. The midterm is really easy: she tells you in advance everything that will be on it, so its really just a matter of memorization, and you can fix and return any paper (except for the last two) to her for full credit. She really cares about her students and she's also just really great to talk to! LOVE her.

DOWNRIGHT BITCH! she makes fun of and belittles students in front of the whole class. If you didn't know there was reading homework (which she doesn't tell you, you have to find out on your own) she gets major attitude and says stuff like "are you stupid? how could you not know there was homework? doesn't this look like school to you?" And this stuff didn't even happen to me so no comments please. it was someone in my class. about every 5 minutes in her class she would say something that would make me want to slap her in the face and break her knees. she may know english well...but most robots do.

Bartley gives a fun class if her students are cool. She starts off sounding really strict and stern but she cools off very quickly. You have to do some work in this class on the essay and the peer reviews but other than those this class is a good one to take with her. She really got me to think and I wasn't expecting that because I've always had a hatred for English.

ENGL 134 Freshman Grade Earned: A General Ed 1:51 pm, Jan 30, 2008 |
She was a really good teacher. At least she was for our class. Her other classes she graded harder and gave more work because they were supposedly less interesting and quiet. So to do well do your work, do good essays, and to make the class easier try and encourage your class to talk more. If she likes your class she is a much easier teacher.

I can't really say anything bad about this teacher! She takes control of the class, which may throw some students off at first, but its only because she wants everyone to take it seriously. I had a great class that participated a lot on blackboard and we all respected eachother's ideas. Kymba inspired me to work hard and love English again and now I am going to minor in English. Take her and you'll be happy.

Ms. Bartley was awesome. She seemed kinda intimidating when you first got into class and came off really intense, but it was only because she wanted everyone to do well. Everyday we would move our desk's into a circle, she would introduce a subject, and we would talk about it the whole time. If the discussion sucked or nobody said anything, then you would get homework. The work for this class was typical English 134: a few essays, which she allowed you to resubmit for higher grades, some reading assignments that were actually worth doing (we read an article about Kanye West), and our final was to go watch Blood Diamond and write a response.
