Patchell was nice, but didn't teach us much. He just assigned us a bunch of looooooong essays without giving us an idea of what he wanted. We sat around most classes just talking about current events. I think he grades using a dart board, blindfolded - in office hours he will tell you that your essay is awesome, but when you get it back it says B- or C+ at best. He grades on a bell curve, and only gave out two or three A's. We read a few of the A papers, and I have no idea what he saw in them! They were boring, didn't follow the topic, and had no style whatsoever. He will mark you down like crazy for citing something incorrectly, but didn't let us know how. I would try and avoid him, as he doesn't teach you much, grades way too tough, and gives you a lot of work.

Thomas Patchell is a very interesting guy. He is very nice, very funny, and "hip." He looks like Greg Proops the comedian and reminds you of the Jack Kerouac beatnik type crowd. He is easily distracted and does not teach you anything you have not already covered in high school, although I think that is the curriculum's fault. He is a nice personalable fellow but grades incredibly hard. He will write "great job!" and "excellent!" all over your paper and still give you a 72% C- on it. Last time I checked but a "great job!" got me at least and solid B. I recommend taking his course but be prepared that your will more than likely get a C.

Professor Patchell was an awesome teacher. I'll admit that he graded harder than i would have expected him too but the rest of the class made up for it! There are three main essays in the class that make up most of your grade. We only read one book called Foam of the Daze" when some other classes i heard read 5 books. He really helps out when you feel that your not doing well with your writing and when you feel that your grade is not that great. Another plus in the class is that their is no final! The only thing that he counts as a final is the last of the three essays! Overall the class is really fun because he gets off topic quite a bit and starts talking about his stories of going to the pubs in ireland and alot of other stuff! This class is really good and i'd recommend other students to take him over another professor.
