Davies is an excellent instructor. I got to experience all the same joys of choir that I had in high school in a more experienced environment. I would, however, like some more time to be able to bond with my peers. Yet, when it comes to what we're learning, Tom has done an excellent job. I plan on staying in Choir for as many quarters as I can.

Dr. Davies is friendly, competent, and just an all-around great guy. If you love to sing and you prefer to be led by someone who knows what he's doing, go for University Singers (or PolyPhonics) and "Daddy Davies."

I've been in some sort of choral program since I was in the 4th grade, and when I came to Cal Poly, I was expecting challenge and a broad repitoir. But I've realized that Dr. Davies is redundant with his selection; I mean, I have nothing against Latin pieces, I think they're wonderful. But when you sing 3 different versions of "Gloria" in a year, not to mention the other songs to go along with that, repeating the same phrases: "praise god, love god, piece on earth, gloria in the highest", it just gets..... old. Of course, I can't overlook the fact that this past concert, he did change up the variety a bit, but still, 2 of our 4 songs were in Latin, reciting the same thing, over and over. I want some more flavor! This was a nice change, let's keep it up! oh, but wait, next quarter we're singing a requiem... now, I don't know what it's going to be like, but it will probably be the same thing; only this time, 40 mins droning on and on, singing the same thing. Like I said before, I love singing; that's the only reason I'm here, and that's the main reason I'm struggling with my want to continue in chior. Seriously, let's change it up once in a while, huh??

This professor will give you the tools you need to be successful later on in your career. I just began teaching High School Choir and everyday, I run into situations where I remember things that I learned from Tom that I now can apply to my own teaching. I had an excellent experience with him and anyone who doesn't JUST HAS A NEGATIVE ATTITUDE. Tom is quite reserved and loving and only loses his temper when presented with people who think they are "all that" and "above all." You will enjoy this class if you really want to have fun. Enjoy the tours and the people - my best friends are the ones I met in Polyphonics and University Singers.

I love music and I love singing. This is the only reason why I continue to attend this class. I have not been very excited about the music selection for the past two quarters, in fact I have been rather bored. Dr Davies is noted to have a temper under high stress situations, and I personally do not appreciate a teacher that is unable to maintain calm in front of students. He knows his stuff, and he is a nice guy, especially when he is kissing your ass, which happens in nearly every one-on-one situation. One of the worst aspects is that he definetely has his favorite students, and he makes it very obvious. He cares very deeply for his students, but only if they are his "pets". If you truly love music, I wish you luck in stomaching this professor. However, if you are not extremely dedicated to singing, I would find a new class.

U Singers is an awesome addition to your schedual. It's a great way to make tons of new and different friends. Especially if you live in the red bricks or take lots of major classes, choir allows you to be more well balanced by giving you a more diverse crowd to get to know. The choir has ranged from 60-100 singers in the past year. Every 2/3 years we travel abroad in the summer. As for Tom, he's really friendly and laid back in choir, which is MUCH different from my highschool director! He picks awesome pieces too! U Singers has the biggest variety of students (in terms of ages and majors) than any other group I can think of at CP. It also has a huge range of experienced singers, from plenty of people who've never sung in their life to people who are going to sing for a living (vocal music majors). Join choir today!

Tom has to be one of the best and nicest teachers I've met. He makes me laugh and enjoy every minute of choir. It's been a pleasure being in the class with him for 3 quarters, and hopefully many more to come. The only way to make the class remotely better then it already is, would be if Tom dyed his hair bright yellow or orange!! Blue and Red are taken....

If you are reading this, you problably are musically inclined. That said, Dr. Davies is a very good conductor. If it were not true, there wouldn't be a need for cutoffs.

Davies for president...Whoo-hoo! Dr. Davies, (Tom) is one of the best, if not, the best teacher at Cal Poly. He is still so passionate about music it makes you wonder if he only got out of college last year. I recommend taking his class as much as possible because it is not only fun and interesting, but he's such a great guy that I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on simply meeting him. Rock on Tom!!! See you next quarter!!!

Mr. Davies is a cool teacher. My high school teacher was okay, but he is awesome! His exercises leave me breathless and the songs are beautiful. He knows just how to work with students. He's a great teacher and I hope he stays here for all my years!

Tom kicks ass. Plain and simple. He'll try to scare off people at the beginning of the year with auditions, but once you make it into the class it's nothing but fun. Tom is very passionate about music and gave us fun and challenging pieces to sing. As long as you are enthusiasitc about singing, you'll have a great time.

Simply put, Dr. Davies (he likes to be called Tom) perfectly encapsulates everything you can ask for in a choir director. He is funny, passionate about music, understanding, and a great singer himself. Having a bad choir teacher can really ruin everything, so it's nice to see someone so good at what he does.
