He was as vibrant as he was flamboyant- whether it be the fancy Disney cursive or the obnoxious laughter and jokes to keep the class awake. He doesn't seem fond of assigning homework problems out of the textbook, which makes you forced to go to office hours if you get stuck and it leaves you unable to check your answers otherwise. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing but his office was crowded more times than not. He purposely makes the group quizzes harder than the exams and "Blue Book" in-class problems were generally completed everyday. Highly recommended but take extreme precaution for the second midterm. It was, by far, the hardest exam that quarter. He also has a strange grading curve for the class which didn't work to my advantage in the end. Would have settled for a C+ or B-.

best, coolest, funniest, clearest teacher I have ever had. I have always been ok at math but never really liked it but I loved going to calc 2 with mendes. When he was in college he worked at disneyland as the guy who stitches the names in the back of the mickey mouse hats with your name on them, and he still writes in the perfect cursive. it is awesome. he makes fun of himself all the time too. He made math super simple and I loved going to office hours just to make sure i knew how to do everything because I knew nobody could explain things better than him. office hours were really awesome with him too because he is super funny and always happy. I took his class winter quarter my freshman year and i am now a sophomore, and i write this so much later because he is probably the best teacher i have ever ever had in all my years of schooling and i will never forget calc 2 at cal poly even when i am 100 yrs old

MY FAVORITE TEACHER AT CAL POLY. I am taking him for a year straight, at first I was thrown off because instead of lecturing he had us do the problems on the board everyday and maybe did 1-2 problems a week. I have never worked so hard at a class and learned the most in one quarter than I have here for 3 years. He is very approachable in office hours. He assigns homework, two midterms and a final. I was skeptical all quarter until I realized how much I truly missed his class. Now I have him for linear then number theory. If you go to his office hours he has insight and you might even learn things that will help you obtain a career later in life. He has a mean sense of humor, but all the students laugh. He does grade hard but he makes you work for it and deserve a grade. By far the best teacher I have ever had and inspires me everyday. He doesn't expect you to know everything, he expects you to struggle and genuinely wants to help and if you're sick or something he understands.

Read on if you want something over than unbridled adulation... Mendes seems like a pretty good teacher in lecture. He tells nice little jokes and seems to present things clearly enough. This perspective completely changes once you get to his homework though. He completely abandoned using textbook problems. That isn't a problem in itself, but the worksheet of problems he gave us were ridiculously hard. I found one person in the engineering tutoring center who could usually help me solve his problems. Any students i spoke to who already took calc ii couldn't figure out the problems. Mendes says he wants you to "struggle" so you can learn. This seems absurd to me though. I've never "struggled" my through a difficult math problem after learning only the basics. I solved difficult math problems by practicing problems and concepts of an increasingly gradual difficulty. If you love math you'll probably like mendes. If you don't, i might look for another teacher. I worked my ass off and learned a lot and still got a terrible grade. Also, there were always a lot of people in his office hours, so it can be hard to talk to him.

Tony was easily my favorite professor this quarter, he's funny and very knowledgeable at the same time. He always very willing to help in class and during office hours. Some people found his jokes a little awkward/weird but you still laugh and at least he wasn't lecturing in a monotone. He presents Calc II in the simplest way possible for you, with very easy to follow lectures. His handwriting is phenomenal because he used to work at Disneyland, handwriting people's names on hats (ask him about it). The lecture is always easy to understand as is his Blue Book problems. However, the homework can be challenging but that's the point. Come in during office hours and he'll be glad to help you out. Midterms (there are 2) and the final are not as hard as the homework, closer to the sample problems he gives before the test and to the Blue Book problems. Quizzes are group quizzes meaning you work with a partner, and the class, and Tony on the problems; its awesome. Best professor so far, take him if you can!

Mendes is awesome. He is hilarious but incredibly smart. His lectures are very well organized and combined with the blue book provide a solid foundation for the class. The homework was absolutely worthless as the tests were nothing like the problems assigned. Tony doesn't even teach the same methods as the book. Do his practice problems, the blue book stuff, and really try to understand the group quizes and you shouldn't have a problem. The only gripe I have is that the tests are only 25 points each and even the smallest math error will cost you a point, but the problems are very doable.

Professor Mendes is such an awesome teacher. His teaching style is laid back and always makes sure the class knows the material as he is teaching. There are two midterms, which i have to admit are fair, some easy questions then a hard question, but they are manageable. You then have group quizzes which are basically work with everyone around you to get the answer. Homework was ten times harder than the actual midterms and final. But despite that if you don't take mendes then you are crazy, this guy is the best.

The homework is pretty challenging but the problems are usually customized and somewhat fun to work out. There are seven homework assignments, two midterms, and the final. Basically I would listen for the beginning then do homework for the last half of class. His homework ins not that bad at all, its not a major undertaking each night. No webassign, all book and paper. In high school I never really understodd limit problems that well, but he taught limit most excellently, and now i understood them, no problem. The first exam (of four) was the hardest, i got a 14 out of 25 (I didnt study for any of my exams). The deffenitions deffently hur everybody (i got 1 out of 5) you have to book defenition pretty much. But there were no defenitions after that. I got around 90% on the other three finals. He drops the one you do worst on or skip or sleep through. So i had about a 90% going into the final. Studied a little bit. But i got a 35out of 50. the class average was 31.71/50 or 62% He does curve final grades, but only slightly. The curve doesnt do much for people at the top of the class, but it helps more for those looking for a C to pass. Homework is graded out of 10. 4pts if it look like u did it. 2 pts each for 3 random problems. i avgeraged about a 9.5. great teacher, i thought he was the greatest teacher until the final.   Dr. Mendes, Tony, Professor Mendes, Your Highness, Stud, whatever you call him (as long as it's on his Acceptable list of names), is a positively wonderful professor. He's extremely enthusiastic about differential calculus, funny, and manages to make even such a boring class fun to sit in, simply by virtue of his presence. He is probably the most intense teacher on campus; make sure you watch his face when a cell phone goes off in class. His penalty for having a phone go off in class is the best and most original idea I've ever heard of for dealing with such an issue (you have to bring cookies or brownies for everyone the next class period). The homework load is reasonable, and everyone knows that graded homework in a conceptually difficult class is a good thing. He gives you an assignment a day except on test days (he will give you three midterms), and if you are slow like me you will take a long time to complete the homework. He gives you three midterms and a final, which are challenging, but he tells you precisely what concepts he is going to test you on and will do example problems similar to those that will be on the test the day before he gives it. Make certain you know those review problems inside and out as knowledge of them will let you conquer each test with aplomb. As for being able to recognize and address student difficulties, he is an expert. I took this course in high school last year and had a great teacher, and after hearing the same concepts taught by Mendes, I understood things I had completely missed the year before. Dr. Anthony Mendes is an excellent professor all-around. I am taking him this quarter for Math 142 and plan to take him again the next. You should too.

Good guy, he presents the material pretty well and is very available for office hours. He makes tests VERY CHALLENGING and often does little tricky things to make sure you're paying attention, which can completely screw you if you don't notice them. Im my opinion he is way too nit picky on the little stuff like algebra, integration, etc. on tests. Linear Analysis is a tough class in general and on most problems, there are probably 50 ways you could mess up (matricies, eigenvalue/vectors, etc) so always be careful with every step when doing problems. Mendes is a math genious, and seems to think everyone else is as well. So if you are also a math genious, you'll probably love him. If you are just trying to get by and you don't fantasize about tangent lines and identity matricies, good luck, its going to be tough.

MATH 437 - Game Theory - that was some class! I have to say that I really enjoy having Professor Mendes as my professor. This is not proof-extensive as other 400-level class but there is a lot of memorization. You have to memorize approximately 15 algorithms that are extremely extensive including the Shapley-Snow Algorithm. Your grade consist of 60% as homework, 20% as your final, and 10% as your midterm. I am NOT kidding on the 60% becuase you will spend a lot of time doing your homework. The only criticism about Mendes is that he needs to spend time on concepts that is extremely difficult to comprehend which includes the "Maximizing and Minimizing" - he knows it means. Overall, Professor Mendes got my "A" for a very good teacher. Oh, tell him how much you soda -- you'll get a good reaction from him.

Great teacher. Really laid back and fun, and explains concepts clearly. He makes an effort at teaching Calculus 2 concepts that are more useful in real-world applications, and not teaching the ones that aren't. Overall the class was fun, he was easy to understand, the midterms weren't too difficult (study for them, and you'll be fine).. I had a blast in his class. Take him if you can.

A wonderful calculus professor. Take him without question. He was excellent. I learned plenty, was challenged fairly, and had a great time in lecture. I'll be able to use the notes from his class effectively in the future.

Professor Mendes is a very interesting teacher. For one, he's a very young professor and can definitely be down to earth. Two, he's not an easy teacher at all -- in better words, expect to work hard in his classes. In Graph Theory (MATH 335), homework is worth 40%, two exams is worth 15% each, and final is worth 30%. The homework is worth 40% becuase you should be expected to spend many hours working on it. His homework expects you to "think" and work at it compare to other professors who give you a problem that you can solve in less than five minutes. Overall, I love his teaching style and his ability to help students during office hours. He is very good at teaching and knows what he is doing. However, you got to stop him once in a while if you need furthur clarification.

I took Mendes for 143 and 142 because he is such a great teacher. He slowly and clearly explains how do to everything and will help you out any time you need it. His midterms are hard but he grades fairly, he will always hint at the hardest problems that you need to know, he also gives partial credit for coming close and he is understanding. He is an extremely nice and funny guy as well. Definitely the best learning experiences Ive had in 2 years were in his class rooms. Any chance you get to take him to better do it.

Mendes is an awesome teacher and i would jump at the chance to take another one of his classes. His tests are pretty straight forward and his office hours are really helpful too. Plus he's just a really nice guy and seems to really care about his students. Take him for sure!

Mendes is a great professor who is willing to help you as much as you need and truly wants to see you do well. Homework counts which is good, since the midterms are tough.

He's a great teacher. I took the SI class that went with the lecture. It helped a lot also. He explained things very clearly, and would do the required homework problems in class at the beginning. He was the best math professor i've had at Cal Poly so far! I hope he's gonna teach 241 in the fall!

I loved this class and Mendes was awesome! I can't believe how smart he is, although sometimes it seemed like he expected us to know everything too. The homework was really hard, but it helps to work in groups, and office hours, which are pretty helpful. The test were very fair and I thought much easier than the hw, so I felt prepared. I learned a lot in this class, even if it didn't feel that way during the course. Get Mendes! You'll love him!

This is not the easy-A 336 you used to hear about. However, you will learn more in here than probably any other math class, and it is not hard to pass. Dr. Mendes is an excellent professor, probably one of the most knowledgable, and yet still down to earth, math professors I've had at Poly. If you start early and work hard on the homework you will do fine, also, he is very willing to give away the answers to homework problems if you ask the right questions. Also, don't worry if your grades seem bad, he is very fair and raises everyone's grades at the end. The only way to get lower than a C is to stop trying.

Mendes is one of the best math professors I've had at Poly. He has a true love of the material and really tries to spread this attitude to the students. The homework is HARD (there's a reason it's given a week and a half in advance), so don't procrastinate, because you WILL NOT get it the night before. But he's always willing to help you in office hours and is very flexible. Plus he's a super nice guy! 50% of our grade was the homework, 20% for the midterm, and 30% for the final. So yeah, homework is the biggie in this class. The only problem I had was with the book, which was a total waste of money. I don't think we used it once. Other than that, it was a great course and I'd recommend Mendes to anyone!!!

I enjoyed taking 143 from Dr. Anthony Mendes. I'm not much of a math person and haven't had the best experiences here at Cal Poly with math (which was probably my fault). In any case, this class didn't make me want to catch up on lost sleep during it. Dr. Mendes also didn't hesitate to work out problems and encouraged interaction with the class.
