ARCH 131 Freshman Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 2:16 pm, Dec 26, 2012 Report Evaluation |
I had Wiley first quarter and he gave the least amount of homework out of all the ARCH professors. This was extremely nice, however I felt that this ultimately was detrimental to the quality of work from our class relative to other classes. He's an extremely funny and nice guy and explains things very well. He has a very hands-off approach and encourages students to bend (sometimes break) assignment guidelines for the sake of creative exploration. I highly recommend him.

Wiley\'s a pretty good first year teacher. I feel that he\'s less harsh, but still truthful, during critiques, compared to Freeby. He is definitely more helpful and he steers you in the right direction. He doesn\'t leave you confused or lost like some other teachers. He also grades fairly, but I think it\'s based on how hard you try in the class, or how much improvement you are showing. He\'s also pretty funny at times.

Not to much work, but you learn a lot. Freeby's 160 is too much work. hard not to get at least a B+ i think. toward the end i didnt waste time on 160 and i still got a A-. I just through some stuff together.

I had Wiley for all three studios this year, and I am very glad I did. He's one of the more intense first year studio teachers. He has a fair amount of long-term projects, and sometimes he'll break up large projects with smaller ones in between, which I personally liked because it was a break from doing too much work while still learning something. There's a lot of model-making and drawing involved - you will learn so much about drafting and good modelmaking craft, which is incredibly helpful. One big difference between him an other teachers is that he doesn't do a lot of sketching or freehand drawing - most of the drawings he assigns are hardline drawings. His critiques are very fair and helpful - he'll never be unnecessarily harsh, but if he doesn't like your project he'll tell you exactly what could be improved. A couple things I was iffy about: 1.) a couple of his projects were kind of too abstract for us to learn anything concrete from it - I definitely wouldn't go so far to say that they were pointless, but I wish he could have expressed more specifically what we were getting out of it. 2.) He's not very personable. He does care about your work, and you can develop a quasi-relationship if you've been in his class long enough and you put enough effort into it, but even after 3 quarters there are times when I'm still a smidge intimidated to talk to him. Some people say that he's goes off on tangents and tells too many stories, but hey, if I went to SCI-ARC for grad school and worked for Frank Gehry I'd have a lot of stories to tell too. Overall, great teacher. Take him if you can.

Keith is great. I have friends who took Freeby for 160 and it was ridiculous. Freeby gave MUCH more work and required a huge project for the final. Keith has simple assignments. Each class is two hours. He demonstrates the assignment during the first hour and then gives you the next hour to work on the assignment. He's always willing to help you. His assignment summaries are BRILLIANT! They provide a step by step guide for the assignment so it's easy if you miss a lecture or forget something. Really, you want Wiley not Freeby.

Keith is pretty awesome when it comes to storytelling. If he hasn't told you yet, he used to work for Frank Gehry. Overall he is a great teacher and is usually positive when it comes to Crits, which is rare in the 130 series. He knows his shit.

Keith knows a great deal about the software covered in this class (Photoshop, FormZ, InDesign). His lectures are relatively informative and rarely take the entire class. Probably my biggest complaint is that he does not talk enough. I think he has the idea that when he is rambling on about something we are all getting quite bored when, in fact, most of the time it is quite interesting and he should do it more often. Homework is due one week after it is assigned.

Wiley's a good teacher. He tells stories about Grad School and his days at Poly and he is a nice guy- likes to toot his own horn a bit, but that's pretty common among a lot of Arch teachers at Poly. His projects were interesting and it is apparent he likes teaching. He is detail oriented and gets excited when his students get into their work. He is a fair grader and gives a resonable amount of work.

Wiley's a really cool guy. He's fun and laid back. There are assignments due almost every period, with a week to do each one. its really enough time, you could do it all in just a couple hours of out of class time. he hardly ever keeps you there the full two hours and you go through all the computer material you really need to know. If you wanna get intense with the designing you can, but if you just go through the proceedures of the programs then you'll be fine. i'd take him for this class, he knows what he's doing.

holy smokes they finally put up wiley. i say his name fits him well, "wiley." don't trip on the review before this one though, wiley's really a good guy... and i know he's going to read this review. if you're an architecture major, you better take him. my quarter was different in that it was much less model based and more drawing than usual. i knew the quarter wouldn't be easy but that's why i took him. you'll learn great heaps of nifty things from drawing to model making. he has a very energetically young character that students can really appreciate. i haven't received my grade yet but that's the point, the grade shouldn't matter. the more you put into this class the more you'll get out of it. his projects aren't always clear but that's done purposefully as he wants to you just go for it and break the rules if you have to, not just a hairline fracture. creativity and exercising your brain is critical as practical and objectivity is somewhat thrown out the window. if you want to take the easy way out, you shouldn't be in architecture.

Before I start this let me just say Prof Wiley is a nice guy(usually) and he really does give great reviews in the design process. He also has a keen incite on good general compositional design, and he does know a thing or two about model design. Those are the good points... Professor Wiley has perhaps the most vague weird projects I have ever encountered. Many of the projects have little or no relation to each other except for his vast expansive projects with dominate a section of the quarter (and good luck if you get started off on the wrong foot on this project). His classes are heavily model based, and very rarely involve extensive graphic work, unless for a peripheral reason. Your main project is presented as a model, and he is a perfectionist when it comes to the models. He used to work for Frank Gehry, which is cool because he has great tips on model making but it just also makes it harder because he expects a lot. If your looking for good grades...please just don't even bother signing up for this class. He graded the first project with some weird evaluation form, then gave up on that process and just kept promising to go over grades until the quarter was up. Not once did we discuss our grade in the class, which means it pretty much is up to his general vibe at the end of the quarter whether you deserve a B- or a C+, regardless of most of the work you turned in during the course of the quarter.
