MATH 118 Sophomore Grade Earned: B Elective 4:33 am, Nov 15, 2006 Report Evaluation |
i took prof. glavan at the beginning of last year as a refresher course before moving onto calculus. pros: while taking his class i felt that glavan presented the material clearly as well as answered questions that students had confidently. he seemed prepared for lecture. the homework load is not bad. i also remember his approachability was very good. i came to him with a problem in the middle of the quarter and he was more than happy to help me.. the cons: not the least monotone teacher ive ever had.. but def. not an "edge of ur seat" kind of professing that i was looking for at the late classes(8pm) also i was pretty sure i had a strong A going into the final and even tho i do not recall the final having any extra difficulty than the midterms i still ended up with a B+. final thought: if youre considering taking glavan, my advice is that you will be pleased in terms of ease, yet disappointed in terms of entertainment; then again.. math class isnt like going to the latest action movie.. prepared to be a lil bored..

I'll be honest, math scares the crap out of me, but I put alot of effort into trying to understand it. I took Glavan the first quarter of my freshman year, and I can say with absolute certainty that he is the worst teacher I have ever had. By far the lowest grade I have ever received, and its not because I was slacking. Many hours of my life were wasted studying for that class. Paying attention in his class proved stressful beyond belief. Just trying to comprehend what he was teaching was an art in and of itself. I'm shocked and confused that others consider him the best teacher they have ever had, and I realize that everyone who loved him took him for math 221, so my advice would be to avoid him at all costs for 118, and as for 221, good luck.....

Glavan was the shit. Im not the best at math, especially when it comes to calculus but he made it easy. hes a super nice guy and always willing to help. the homework doesnt take long but make sure you do it because thats where he gets almost all of his midterm and final questions from (along with the quizes) the quizes were the only hard thing about this class. one of the best teachers i have had at cal poly. take glavan for sure. dont listen to the other postings, u have to be retarded not to do well in his class.

I don't want to sound bitter just because I got a bad grade, but this is pretty much the worst math teacher I've ever had in my life. I'll tell ya right now I was 2 years ahead in math in high school. All of the stuff that we were supposed to learn in 118, I'd already learned. Most of you guys are probably the same way. However, since precalc isn't really something I practiced in my spare time, I definitely needed to brush up on it. Unfortunately, Galvan's stoner/surfer "let's just get the hell out of here" attitude didn't do it for me. He's pretty much the laziest teacher I've ever met. When we'd ask questions, he'd explain it about half way through, then go "Okay you can probably get it from there or else you can look in your book." When we didn't understand how he did something, he would explain it over and over the same way he did the first time, so that it was never even close to clarified. The guy talks in circles like you wouldn't believe. He even confuses himself. He'll ramble for a bit, then stop, and just stare at the problem, and then ask the class what he did wrong. Do yourself a favor and try and get a real teacher for this class.

Glavan is a great math teacher. He presents the material in a clear and straight-forward manner. The class is easy to understand with his direction. I would take him again.

Glavan presents the material unclearly, but if you are not understanding the material he will slow down and describe the steps. His tests and quizzes came straight from the hw he assigned. He also curved the tests.

glavan wants to get through the class period just as much as the students do which doesn't encourage or motivate anyone to actually try in class. a lot of people found him difficult to understand bc he doesnt present material clearly, but if u have a background of algebra or like math you will do fine in this class. tests are kind of difficult you definitely need to study for them, but he tells you what will be on them with a study guide. curves the tests majorly!!!

Ok, he's a nice guy and all but his class is sooo boring and he's such a BAD teacher that you really need to have a clear view of the material before you take the class if you want to get a decent grade. I can tell you right now -he IS'NT going to teach you the material -in fact, usually his lectures just end up confusing you more! I was a very good student in high school and I'd have to say this class was one of the WORST math classes I have ever taken. If you like math and you grasp it quickly, you probably won't have trouble. However, if your someone who needs to be taught the material (like me), then DO NOT take this class. Hope this helps.
