CE 355 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 7:12 pm, Mar 19, 2012 Report Evaluation		Jansen is an excellent teacher. He presents the material in a clear and reasonable way. He moves fast in class so make sure to pay attention and don't miss too many classes. Lab was pretty easy. Design project took quite a bit of time, but if you put the time in on the project, studying for the final is much easier because you've already done everything needed. Would definitely take Jansen again!

CE 259 Junior Grade Earned: N/A Required (Major) 3:18 pm, Dec 9, 2011 Report Evaluation		Jansen is smart guy. He knows anything and everything there is to know about concrete. He has a good sense of humor with a lot of sarcasm (in a good way). He makes concrete seem interesting. He does expect quality, professional work so don't get lazy. I definitely recommend him.

CE 355 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 5:17 pm, Mar 24, 2011 Report Evaluation		When Jansen walked into class and started telling us about a dream he had about concrete, we all knew it was going to be an intense quarter. As the previous reviews have mentioned, 5-6 hours is typical for one of the 9 homework assignments we were given. And every lab except one was used to work on the design project, which for most people ended up being in the 60-80 page range of calculations. But as we all know, there is no better way to learn than by doing, so credit to Jansen for being an effective instructor. This class is a lot like CE 204 and CE 351 combined, forget about 259...this is a structures class. Conceptually it was not too difficult and everything made sense on the homework, but for some reason the midterms always destroy everyone and then seem pretty easy when you go back through them. Oh one other thing, I've heard Jansen's 1.5 hour lectures get a test that takes 2 hours to complete, and the test for our 1 hour lecture was probably a 1.5 hour test...watch your time, he underestimates how long his problems take to do. Overall though, you will never learn so much in 10 weeks as with Jansen, and will never meet anyone again who knows so much about concrete. Suck it up, do the work, and take him!

CE 355 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 2:33 pm, Aug 5, 2010 Report Evaluation		Jansen is a great professor who knows his material incredibly well. He assigns loads of homework (6 hours average to finish a hw assignment), and his tests are brutal. However, you will learn more than you could have imagined. He is highly approachable in office hours and will talk with you in length about anything. I gave this guy a \'B\' in recognizes student difficulties. Let me clarify: he completely recognizes student difficulties with regards to workload and the difficulty of tests....he just doesn\'t care. It is a 300 level college course, and he expects you to put in the time and effort to learn the material. Do this, and you will do well.

CE 207 Sophomore Grade Earned: C Required (Major) 10:46 pm, Jun 20, 2010 Report Evaluation		This teacher helped me prepared for the final better than my 204 teacher but the final was still ridiculous. The midterms are not hard but silly mistakes can bring you down alot. His last question is usually worth the majority of the midterm and if you cant get that you\'ll probably get a D on the midterms. I dont agree with his grading scale because if you are able to answer 4 out of 5 questions (missing the last question) a D doesnt represent what you know. To elaborate on that more, his midterms are 20% of the final grade, missing the last problem gets you 8% off your final grade. So he is saying if you cant answer his hardest/last problem on the midterm you dont understand 8% of the class, which is total BS. I\'m glad I\'m done with the CE department!

CE 355 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 11:51 pm, May 4, 2010 Report Evaluation		Jansen and Chuck Norris have much in common, expect what Norris does to peoples faces Jansen does to concrete. I have never seen a person so enthusiastic over a building material, but it really helps make the class interesting and not so dry. Homework takes a tremendous amount of time to do everything right, expect to start it the day it is assigned and work on it every day up until it is due. Jansen knows this, and accordingly homework is worth 25% of your grade. The midterm destroyed everyone (I got a B- and was happy), there were 2 A\'s on the midterm. Dont expect a curve. The design project in lab is worth 10% but to do it right takes 50% of your time, ours ended up being 120+ pages long. It may seem excessive but it is the best way to study for the final and midterm. Best CE professor I have had yet. May the concrete be with you.



CE 355 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 3:47 pm, Mar 25, 2010 Report Evaluation		Jansen is a real teacher. None of this \"do however much you feel is necessary\" crap. He assigns a lot of work and expects you to spend much more than the minimum time on it, but he is very reasonable. Everything he teaches he makes easy to understand, his examples are fantastic, tests are challenging but fair, and he KNOWS he assigns way to much work. HOWEVER, this class is a taste of the real world and its type of workload. Jansen is also fantastic in office hours, though at first he is a bit intimidating. Definately take Jansen for 355.

CE 207 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 1:21 am, Mar 24, 2010 Report Evaluation		Jansen is great. He explains everything clearly, tests you on exactly what should be tested on, provides example printouts that really helped me learn the material, and is actually a pretty funny guy. Homework is long but pretty easy (and worth 25%) of the final grade. My only complaint about him is that he didn\'t really prepare us for the common final which was stupidly hard, but he must have curved it a lot because I got a D on the final (35% of grade) but an A in the class. If he teaches 207 again, take Jansen.

CE 259 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 7:26 am, Dec 17, 2009 Report Evaluation		Jansen is the concrete KING!!!! He knows soo much about the subject and imparts so much of his knowledge to his students. His lecture days when we\'re not doing material or properties tests can go a little long as a result. Be prepared to do a decent amount of work for all of the labs. There\'s a sweet timber project where we get to design and stress test a structure that our lab groups build from 2 x 2s and nails. This is a very easy class. There\'s no tests, only suggested reading and four or five homework assignments that you can definitely get through if you work with other classmates. Jansen means more work for the lab but you\'ll learn a lot more!

CE 355 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 9:01 pm, May 5, 2008 Report Evaluation		Jansen was THE best CE teacher I've had. He was able to lecture in class clearly and gave us everything we needed to know. And on the off chance I didn't understand in class, he was actually helpful in office hours. Of course, it helps that he actually speaks english (not to be racist, but it really does help.) Only catch is his tests can be pretty hard. But all and all, I recommend him. He'll get you ready for the real world.

CE 355 Senior Grade Earned: N/A Required (Major) 3:42 pm, Mar 24, 2007 Report Evaluation		Taking Professor Jansen was like a breath of fresh air. It seems like every teacher at Cal Poly is horrible in some regard, be it their extremely thick accent, poor grammer that leads to misunderstanding, an inability to convey the subject matter clearly, or just mailing in their career. But Jansen is the exception to the rule. His lectures follow such a clear outline that you'd have to try to be confused. Then he passes out his weekly homework (yes, it was often lengthy ~4 hours) and it's laid out in the same way as his lectures and each question has a specific purpose to teach you something. In his office he bends over backwards for you and makes everything even more clear. CE 355 can be a very tedious course and the material can be hard to wrap your mind around, but taking Jansen is the best move you can make. His tests are hard but only because he doesn't spoon feed A's. Do the homework and go to every class and there's no excuse to not pass his class. And it's almost a guarantee that you'll come out of it knowing it better than most.

CE 259 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 5:59 pm, Jan 7, 2007 Report Evaluation		I didn't like Jansen at all at first, but towards the middle of the quarter I really started to like him. Don't plan on getting out of class more than 30 minutes early, and be prepared for long lectures on concrete. He is one of those professors who you have to prove yourself to. There's definitely a good amount of work for a lab class but you learn a lot. I would take him again.



CE 355 Senior Grade Earned: C Required (Major) 12:15 pm, Jul 12, 2006 Report Evaluation		I've heard that a lot of people hate jansen, I didn't mind him at all though. He knows concrete like the back of his hand, and the tests were pretty hard. But he does grade on a curve, and I really feel like I learned more in his class than almost any others. I would take him again.

I've only been spending in the neighborhood of 3 or 4 hours per week, and I think that is very reasonable. I like him.

CE 355 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 7:40 am, Mar 22, 2006 Report Evaluation		Jansen is an awesome teacher but assigns way too much work. Homework was a lot of work, not hard but if you did it then you'd understand the material. The thing that took the most time was the design project. I've never had so much work in a quarter ever. you basically have 9 weeks to design a building from top to bottom which wouldn't have been so bad if we didn't have to do things over and over and over again changing things because we weren't clear about certain aspects in the beginning. THe project was a good idea but it would've been better to have more guidance. He's very helpful in office hours and makes lecture pretty interesting. Lab at night is torture but I learned a lot. thank god i'm not a structural student is all I have to say

CE 259 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: C Required (Major) 11:33 am, Feb 24, 2006 Report Evaluation		This guy throws a bunch of work at you and then goes through your labs marking as much as he can possibly mark off. And then on top of that he doesnt even mantain good records of his stuff. In class he tells the dumbest jokes and i think some people just laugh because they feel sorry for him. Also i think he hates construction workers because he always talks about them like they have no brain cells, get over it! Don't even think about askin him questions because he just stare you down like old coach of the raiders (gruden).

CE 355 5th Year Senior Grade Earned: D Required (Major) 1:57 pm, Mar 27, 2005 Report Evaluation		Jansen definately moves quick and expects a lot, he assigns a ton of homework, i think myself among others put in at least 10 hours of work each week, probably more. His tests are fair, the homework isn't impossible, and he's excellent in office hours. Take him if you get the chance, just be ready to really put in you time

CE 204 Junior Grade Earned: C Required (Support) 5:21 pm, Jul 15, 2004 Report Evaluation		Professor Jansen should be taken if you have a chance to, and here's a couple reasons why: 1. He has a personality. He is a very welcome respite from the elderly, monotonous lecturers that seem to plague Cal Poly. 2. He is very helpful during his office hours. He will take time to help you on any question. For his course, going to office hours is recommended... 3. He previously worked in industry for longer than most of the students he teaches have been alive for, so he knows what he is talking about. 4. Yes, he assigns a lot of homework. However, all that homework made sure I knew the material - even though I ended up getting a C. Overall, a great professor.



CE 205 Sophomore Grade Earned: A Required (Support) 12:04 am, Jun 16, 2004 Report Evaluation		Super easy. I've heard that 205 is easier than 204, but this was ridiculous. I'm not sure if it was Jansen, or just the material. He was a good teacher, though. Super nice, and really helpful in office hours. I'll take him again if I ever get the chance.

CE 204 Sophomore Grade Earned: N/A Required (Major) 11:53 am, Apr 27, 2004 Report Evaluation		i think jansen is a horrible teacher. he assigns waaay too much homework (think about 5 hours of work) and his quizzes are often pretty tricky. not to mention his lectures are not only confusing they're also boring. i've heard other strength of materials teachers are a lot easier and assign a lot less homework. i wouldn't choose him again if i had the choice.

CE 201 Sophomore Grade Earned: A Required (Support) 1:30 pm, Apr 7, 2004 Report Evaluation		I think Jansen is and exellent professor...his lectures are clear, his homework assignments directly relate to what you are doing in class, and he answers students questions with complete clarity. If you have the chance I definately recomend taking him...it is sure to be a great experience.

CE 204 Sophomore Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 8:51 pm, Mar 18, 2004 Report Evaluation		Jansen was a great teacher. His lectures were always clear, and if any questions were asked he would answer them fully. He really knew what he was talking about and the quizes he gave were not too difficult, but not to easy, they just made sure you knew what you were doing. Homework was not overburdening, it was assigned and due with plenty of enough time to ask questions if you were having difficulty with a problem. He was also pretty nice and funny, the lectures were always great, not monotone or unenthusiastic like other teachers that I have seen.
