5 evaluations Recognizes Student Difficulties: 2.80 Presents Material Clearly: 2.20
Prof. Cengel is really new, so I understand that I can't expect her to be a fantastic professor. However, I felt like I was in a freshman high school class the entire quarter. She treated us like high schoolers, and didn't try to help us understand the material, rather we just regurgitated it on the quizzes, which were short answer instead of multiple choice. One bonus, is that 20% of your grade was just showing up for class and before every quiz she'd basically give us the questions and the answers to the quizzes. But this made us just memorize what we had to know instead of understanding what we were learning. Hopefully as she gets the hang of the whole teaching thing she'll become a better one.
I really enjoyed having Cengel as an instructor. She's a true professional and always presented material with clarity. I don't have anything complaints about the instructor nor the course.
I loved how the class was mainly an open discussion. It made the time go by quickly and was a good opportunity to become more comfortable speaking aloud in class. On that note, class participation is required. But don't be intimidated! Speaking up in class was easy because Cengel made everyone so comfortable. She was always respectful of student's opinions, even when someone would say something slightly inappropriate or controversial. I really admired her poise.
Overall, if you have to take this class take it with Cengel.
At first I didn't like Katya, I thought she was childish and didn't really know how to teach a class. But as the quarter went on she got her bearings and turned out to be a really great professor. She has some crazy stories to tell about the investigative journalism projects she's done all over the world, and has some awesome connections in the industry that she brings in as guest speakers. She grades pretty easily but I still feel like I learned a decent amount from her class.
What the guy/gal below said. Amen. I too took this class and have long since graduated from Poly, but I was cruising Poly Ratings for a kick and thought that I should pipe in and let you know how much of a joke this prof is.
Tips for this class: don't buy the book, or buy one book for you and a set of friends. The quizzes are all on her lectures. The guest speakers are usually pretty cool. Speak up in class. I made it a goal to raise my hand at least once a week. The midterm also uses a lot of old quiz questions. Lastly, make your blogs detailed, thorough, and accurate. Make your blogs long and with a lot of sources. your blogs are definitely a huge part of your grade.
