There are few grades given, and the course seems easy; however, beware of her grading! It'll surprise you when you receive a low B, and you thought you did well.
Advice: build a team in advance for group projects that functions really well. Practice multiple times and go beyond the rubric. Following everything on the rubric will not result in an A.
In addition, the final is very difficult in comparison to the course. So, put time into studying throughout the quarter--and share the overly priced book with five friends. The book might not even be neccesary, but there are questions on the final unrelated to lectures.
Again, the level of difficulty seems easy going into each project/ test, but bring it up several notches to insure yourself an A.
I disagree with this previous evaluation. I have had several classes with Jerusha, and I think she is very sensitive to student needs and a great teacher! She is flexible with students and quite knowlegable in the REC field.
The language on the multiple choice questions on the tests were the worst I have ever experienced. Knowing the material was half the battle, diciphering the question was the other half.
The class is highly theoretical and not very practical. The theory is only quasi-scientific, but the professor approaches it like its an exact science. This would be ok if she was consistent with language, but the questions on the test are HIGHLY inconsistent in terms of rhetoric and language.
Furthermore, an asonine grading paradigm is used that requires you turn in a bunch of old material with your final project, and failure to do so will lower your grade automatically to a C. It doesnt matter how amazing your final project is, if you forget to turn in the first draft, you get a C or lwoer.
Speaking of the prject, the prompt is vague but the expectations are EXACT. She seems to want something specific from you in terms of writing style, but does not specify what on the project description.
Summary: The professor treats the class, the grading, and the material like you are in a math class where everything is exact, but sustainable tourism simply is not an exact science, and answers are open to informed and thoughtful defense.
I didnt learn anything besides common sense in this class and I cant apply anything I learned.
I thought when I took this class that it was the first time it was being taught, but seeing other 313 evaluations I guess I was wrong in my thinking. Anyhow, Dr. Ru is an awesome person and teacher in my opinion (and I would put my character judgement skills up against anyones). I took my REC course planning class during the same quarter as 313 and she was extremely helpful and willing to answer any questions pertaining to the classes or anything to do with school. 313 has a lot of reading in the form of articles, but most of them provide interesting insight and good class discussions. There is a project and as someone else already mentioned it will help you tremendously if you find solid students to work with in your group. Everyone needs to learn about sustainability as it has been rapidly growing in popularity across all business, so take this class with Dr. Ru!
Dr. Ru is an excellent teacher! She is very smart and knowledge on sustainable tourism. The class is definitely one of the more challenging RPTA classes, however the material is very interesting.
5th Year Senior
I had taken this class for it was a 2 unit seminar class (this quarter Rec. 412 was Wine Tourism-- it changes every quarter). She does present her standards the first day of class, but she is the ONLY instructor in the department who has no flexibility. You could have a death in the family and she wouldn't be more flexible than a steel knot. When creating the syllabus she must have forgotten what 2-unit seminar meant. She did have a a discussion board in blackboard to let her know anonymously how you felt about her and/or the class. She must have been looking for a was to boost her ego, because one shot of criticism and she wasn't listening... instead shifting it and letting students know to stop being whiners. We had a huge 1500 word research paper due this quarter (yeah in a seminar... APA format) and that was a little brutal. Overall, it was a good subject matter class... if she was not teaching it. Out of everyone in the department of REC she is the most impersonal instructor whom you can't have a relationship with like we do with the others. Other people would have been more qualified to teach this class since they have real-world experience, which Dr. Greenwood lacks. She definitely is on a power trip, who is NEVER wrong, and needs to be kicked off her pedestal. Great class, bad instructor. I am surprised I squeezed out a B without having to give my own blood.
Dr. Ru is a great teacher. I find her to be extremely flexible and understanding. She is clear on the content and has an easy going personality. I've done well in all of the classes I've taken with her and never had an issue that I felt couldn't be easily resolved with her help.
Fuck this guy. Id like to stick my tounge up his ass.
