DeJong sucks! I can't believe people have taken him and actually liked him. I couldn't stand going to the labs because he is so incredibly boring, and he lacks a personality and any semblance of understanding for people who might need instruction beyond his lab manual. Just because he wrote does not mean that is the only explanation of the material that is needed. He is horrible don't take him.

Dr. De Jong is a kindly old man, and is obviously highly intelligent, but is an average instructor. Sure, he wrote the lab manual, but he spent first half hour of each lab period regurgitating that which we read on us. Expect to stay the full three hours in his class. The lab tests demanded a lot of study time, and memorization.

De Jong is a good teacher, but lab blows. Being as that he wrote the lab book I do take that out on him a little bit. I would say that lab consumed more of my time studying than every other class I took combined. And I got a B for it. To give that some perspective, I had a 99% average in lecture. Scores are consistenly low and never curved. Scores in his class are marginally higher than the intra-lab average. You'll always stay the full three hours. Class is boring. The old man is nice I guess. I just got tired towards the end; tired of having my bio grade FUCKED. Hahahaha good luck.

So what if I got B in his class. I'm sure I deserved an A. This guy wrote the book so be prepared to know EVERYTHING in his lab manual. His tests aren't that difficult but some questions can be very weird. He tends to put a lot of math problems on his tests. His pre-exam reviews are pretty helpful. He will make you stay all three hours. I would NOT recommend him.

In lab you have quizes twice a week. Since he wrote the lab manual he expects you to know it inside and out for these quizes, so the are impossible. If you dont pass the quiz you have to do two long and tedious worksheets. If you dont complete your worksheets and get everything correct you cant get back your test until you do. So you play this little game of his that he enjoys so much, watching us struggle on the worksheets. Advise to all forget the quizes and just do the worksheets, saves you alot of stress on the quizes.

This class was difficult. If you don't study for a test, then expect to fail it and there is no raising your grade after that. The quizes that you have everyday don't matter for anything, unless you have a border-line grade. Also, if you fail a quiz, you are expected to turn in the homework assignment and it takes forever for you to actually pass the assignment. If you don't pass all the assignments, then you get an incomplete in the class. The labs themselves are very boring, but there are questions on the tests about each lab. Professor DeJong is a nice guy, but not very helpful during the labs. He makes you figure out everything on your own and then expects you to understand every little detail from the lab. He also wrote the lab manual so you need to read and understand it for the test. Students in other classes seemed to have an eaier time with this class and did much better than the kids in my class.

I had Dr. DeJong for Bio 151 lab, freshman year, first quarter. And i will tell you he is the hardest teacher I have ever had to put up with. But it was worth it in my opinion. The worksheets he made us do were very useful. Many of the midterm and final questions were very similar to those on the worksheets. The only thing that really annoyed me was how he required that you have all the worksheets done and all the answers right before the end of the quarter, otherwise you got an incomplete for the lab. Other than that, he was a really good teacher. After working so hard, the material sticks with you, which then helps in the long run. Students are forced to work in his class which then allowed them to get higher grades on the midterms compared to students who had other professors but only had to stay in lab for an hour or so. My point is, if you like a challenge and are willing to work your butt off, by all means take DeJong, he's awesome. If not, then maybe he's not the best teacher to choose. Good luck :)

ok...so he makes you learn things by making you do these "purple sheets" if you dont do well on the lab quizes, but u get one little thing wrong and he turns them back and you ahve to keep turning them in till its 100% right, otherwise you could end up with an incomplete for the lab!

Dr DeJong, although he is hard, is very fair. This guy knows what he is talking about. He can answer any question about the material with no problem, he did write the lab book after all. Even though he did make you do those purple sheets, they really helped you learn the material as you went. They saved me a lot of cramming and stress in the long run. I also probably got a B instead of C because of them, because I was right on the line. Keep up with them though because you have to turn them all in and get ok's or else you could get an incomplete. If you have a question about the sheets, just go up and ASK and he will give you the answer. I dont know why people never caught on to this... Dr. DeJong likes to be tricky...

This guy is a real douche. He is one of those professors who makes sure you know that he is smarter than you. As if that was necessary... He wastes lab time lecturing on the material everyone studied the night before in preparation for the lab quiz and then keeps the class there until exactly 3 hours have gone by. He does a good job explaining things, but it is so drawn out and boring that it is hard to pay attention. He responds to student questions in an intimidating manner and likes to criticize your work. On the good side, De Jong really prepares you for the lab exams by giving difficult quizes and having a review day. I would recomend taking another teacher for this lab.

I had Dr. DeJong my first quarter at Cal Poly and now I'm a Senior. I must say he has been one of my best professors because he is very organized and presents material clearly. Yes he is hard and expects you to know everything that has been presented during the class, but aren't we all in college to learn? I still remember and use most of what I learned in his lab - it gave me a great handle on the basics. His tests are difficult but very fair. Very nice man who will help you if you need it.

When I realized that not only was Dr.DeJong my Bio 153 lab teacher, but that he had also written the lab manual, I knew I was in for it. Dr.DeJong may have been extremely knowledgeable when it came to Biology, but he was also one of the most anal retentive teachers I have ever had. He held his students responsible for every minute detail in the lab manual. I'm not sure why we had to know trivial and unneeded information, but my theory is that we were held responsible for it only because he himself had written it. Dr. DeJong also completely lacks a sense of humor, and when you recieve him as a lab teacher, fully expect to stay the full 3hrs, even if all work is finished early.

I didn't fail his class by any stretch, no help from De Jong. He is just one of those guys who belongs in some buried away research lab where no one ever has to see him, society would be the better for it.

Dr. Dejong is the funniest teacher ever. Anyone who says he lacks a sense of humor is a retard. He is a sweet old old man who knows his physiology. The exams are from the lecture notes. Spot quizes are intimidating at first.

De Jong might be a little hard to relate to, but that's the way it's supposed to be with teachers. Teachers are supposed to make be smarter than you are, they should tell you if you give the wrong answer in class. Dr. De Jong has given is life, literally, to the education of other is physiology. Sit down, take notes, and shut up. Listen to this man, he knows what he is talking about and give students more than enough opportunity to do well in his class. Listen to what he says, he's got a sense of humor too; and he'll sit down a nd listen if you are having trouble.

i was able to learn very well from dr de jong. i have seen few professors that work as hard as he does to prepare students. he is extremely organized and thorough in his presentation of material. granted there is a lot of material, but it is laid out in a way that makes it manageable. study your notes every day, never think anything is too detailed to show up on an exam and you will learn a ton!

This professor was by far the worst I have had a poly. My GPA is in the low 3 range as a fourth year which means as a biology major I am not an idiot. This man requires way too much for an entry physiology course that is only worth 4 units. If you decide to take this course or are required to do so it will be a full time job. Things are due on weekends at his house which he refuses to tell you the location of, his tests are graded similar to, yet more intense than the SAT grading system. It is possible to get many negative scores on tests, and other assignments. Expect to leave the two labs per week an hour after lab has ended (8 hours per week total), because he will schedule the lab so UU hour follows it of there is extra time he knows you don't have class and can stay longer. This man may ruin your life. His stupid jokes are only funny to those who are kissing his ass in hopes they'll stay on his good side and recieve grades accordingly. He will pick and choose those who he likes and does not like and your grade will greatly relect that. Good luck to anyone who has to take him.

DeJong is one of the hardest professor\'s I\'ve had at Cal Poly. Labs take over three hours almost everytime. His lecture notes are really hard to follow. You just have to be prepared to memorize every piece of information he gives you. The tests are pretty hard. He really does like spending time with the students though

Dr. DeJong is very dedicated to teaching this course. You can tell he puts a lot into the course and does a lot to make his students actually learn and know the material. He gives you packets of material for lab and lecture from which you take notes. He can be difficult to follow, but just know if he mentions something in class, you should know it very well. Same goes for lab which yes, will go the full three hours every time, but the labs are really neat and well organized. Overall I would recommend Dr. DeJong, but be prepared to work your ass off.

The quarter just started and I\'ve only had one day of this guy and I feel scammed. I don\'t care if the man is an Einstein, he is impossible to follow, incredibly dull, and totally anal. Thank you Cal Poly.

I know that no one will benefit from this review because Dr. DeJong is retiring, but I just have to say that I really learned a lot from this class. There were times when the workload and expectations were ridiculous, but at least I feel prepared for my anatomy and physiology class next quarter. I hope he has a fulfilling retirement. Cal Poly is losing a great asset.

I had Dr. DeJong class during Fall quarter 2010. I am a junior and have taken quite a lot of classes with bio profs and others, but the ONLY class that I will remember so far has been Dr. DeJong class. The guy is an institution! He can awake the intellectual curiosity in all his students! Only special professors can do that! What can I say! Just a a big THANK YOU for all your hard work Dr. DeJong! Wish I could have taken a couple more classes with him.You will be greatly missed! What a loss for Cal Poly students! Viva for Brahms and Dr.DeJong!

At the time, the workload was daunting. I wanted nothing more than to be done with the class, but looking back, I've never learned so much in a class. I was so prepared for Bio 432 and 433 - they almost seemed like review classes. The man worked tirelessly to prepare labs each week, and he loved to talk to students and keep in contact with past ones. I know I'm not the only one who benefited greatly from his great wealth of knowledge. He's retired now, but I hope he knows what a loss it is to Cal Poly not having him around anymore. I hope his retirement is great.

Dejong is extremly smart, approachable, and organized. He will teach you everything that you will be expected to know for his tests, and he is good at answering questions directed at a specific problem you are having. On the other hand, be he is extremly demanding and very critical of all work that he asks of you. Follow all the directions he gives percisely, because he is anal retentive about the details. Also, know every detail from his notes; even the most obscure fine print at the bottom of a lecture hand out is fair game on his tests.

Dr De Yong is a funny guy. With that said let's talk about the class. He will ask obscure questions on his quizzes, but his exams cover the main points any instructor would cover. You will be asked questions that require that you understand and can apply the information, not just reguritate it on exam day. The lab is run fairly well and you should have plenty of time to complete the requirements even if you get off to slow start or make a mistake. The lab notebook format is not as stringent, or time consuming, as other upper division biology instructors require.

Dr. Dejong is my favorite Biology teacher of my Cal Poly career. However, he is very challenging and is probably better for the more mature student. The first quater I had DeJong I was a senior and still very intimidated. When you get to know him he has a great sense of humor and is lots of fun, in his own way. He is just serious about teaching and providing a very respectable education, which we all deserve. He does hold you accountable for thorough, detailed information and therefore the tests can be difficult and research papers precise. The reason is not because he wrote the material but because your overall knowledge and retention of that knowledge will be much greater if you strive for 100% rather than 75%. Memorize and understand the class notes he goes over in class and you should do well. Good Luck

Dr DeJong is a very difficult professor who expects students to KNOW the material presented in class. If you are a procrastinator and wait until the last minute to study you will fail his class. You must attend class and go over the notes that he gives you. He does not surprise you with the test. It is exactly what is in his notes. If you read the notes again after lecture and learn the material you will do fine in the class but most of all unlike some classes you will actually master Anatomy and Physiology. I learned so much from this class. I feel prepared to go on in the medical field.

Dr. DeJong is one of the teachers I've had a Cal Poly. He cares about what his students learn in his class. Yes you have to know a lot of material but it is well worth it. I am going to take the DAT in the near future and I feel that his class has prepared me. There's a reason why he received the distinguished teacher award.
